Palindrome

When both your past and future spell fear.

Award-winning author Stuart Woods has crafted a masterful novel no reader will soon forget. For years, Liz Barwick has been battered by her brutal husband, a famous pro football player. This time it takes an emergency room to keep her from death. Now the beautiful and talented photographer retreats to an island paradise off Georgia’s coast to find solitude—and herself.

As she becomes increasingly involved with the strange and handsome twin scions of the powerful Drummond family, she feels her traumatic memories begin to fade. But when a killer launches a series of gruesome murders, Liz discovers that there is no place to hide—not even in her lover's arms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - awful typing
I love to read Stuart Woods and this one is a great story. When the publisher had this converted to a Kindle - no one proof read it.There were so many words that were typed wrong or made no sense at all.I have read over 50 books on my Kindle and this is the first one that has been an issue.BUT if you overlook this annoying mis -types.. the book is - as always - another hit for Stuart Woods.

2-0 out of 5 stars SO UNBELEIVABLE
I am very disappointed with this book. It has the potential to be a good read, but the characters and how the plot was executed is so unbeleivable. I thought since it was written by Stuart Woods it would have been somewhat engaging...it's not.
I was annoyed and angry because I feel that the author took the easy road with how easily Ramsey got away with multiple murders and how dumb Lee Williams was even after he supposedly KNEW how crafty Ramsey was (this is where I just gave up). I finished the book ONLY because I had wasted so much time already).
The twin, who was Liz's love interest ran around in a loin cloth (what the crap???) and never stayed still long enough (after sex with Liz he usually left) for me to connect with him.
And please explain to me why the two african americans who lived on the island were still living in "slave quarters" and why young James Moses/Drummond was uneducated? I was so insulted...at one point a doctor who had come to call on old Angus referred to James as "the colored boy"!
This book has the make-up of a romantic fiction piece.
I was very disappointed because it started off ok. I was excited for Liz taking a stand and seeking help to get away from her abusive husband (Ramsey). It seems as if she will get a fresh start when she leaves for an isolated island reteat, but it goes downhill from there...

5-0 out of 5 stars Reprint of an excellent book
I gave this book a 5 star review because it deserves it.
But, this is a reprint of a book Woods wrote waaaaaay back.To produce it
as if its brand new sucks. If the name had not stuck in my mind because I had to look it up in the dictionary at the time, I would probably have bought it again.
Then I would have been mad because it was an original in 1991.I have the hard copy in my library which fortunately is catalogued and only took a second to double check.
So, those of you who are Woods fan, if he is starting that crap, check each release.

1-0 out of 5 stars PALINDROME
READING STEWART WOODS BOOKS HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TILL THIS ONE. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Both Sides
For a break from all of the holiday cheer I picked up PALINDROME by an old favorite author Stuart Woods. The 300 pages flew by as he pulls the reader deep into the sands and time of Cumberland Island. Two stories twine and mix as Liz Barwick seeks shelter from an abusive ex-husband on a private island off the GA coast and finds herself drawn into the family who've owned the island for centuries.
A fast paced, each read for the perfect escape from family feasts. It is not the book to take to bed on Christmas Eve because you'll still be up when Santa makes his entrance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Daddy Daughter time
The palindromes are great. My husband and daughters enjoyed reading it together. And I know the lesson of palindromes will stick with my daughters between the book and the game we played with scrabble tiles letting them rearrange words to see for themselves in a tactile way.

As for whether to buy it or not, I'd rather check it out from the local library. The art was garish. I wouldn't be able to read this one over and over with the kids like I do with our favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun little book
Bob has a story to tell.He starts by telling you his name is nothing serious to the reader but it almost did him in(literally as the word Bob is about to fall on him). The other day his teacher taught the class about palindromes and the only one in class with a name that is a Palindrome is poor old Bob.

Much to his dismay he learns palindromes are everywhere!Even mom and dad are palindromes!

Bob, in a panic, runs through the city and finds even more palindromes!

In the end he figures out they are just words and nothing to be afraid.

This was a cute book. The artwork really helps with the pod people approach to the story line.

My daughter wanted it read many times and has read it a few times her self. Mark of a good book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever Stuff from Agee

A palindrome is a word or phrase that can be read from left to right like DEED, POTATOP, and the titles of two of Jon Agee's other books: SIT ON A POTATO PAN,OTIS!andSO MANY DYNAMOS! These little marvels are entertaining, amusing, clever, and incredibly difficult to create. Try writing a few of your own to see for yourself the thought and effort required to give birth to these linguistic gems.
Pairing his palindromes with his appropriate black and white cartoons gives life to the palindromes, flesh to the bones, and layers of humor and meaning not readily evident in the bare words.

I like every one of the illustrated palindromes in this book, but like everyone else I have a few favorites. Most of the palindromes that impress me have a preposterous picture scene accompanying it or an impressive length of words and/or letters. The title palindrome illustrated on the cover is depicted again on the inside of the book with a two pager. On the inside title page we see a chubby boy, fork in hand, running towards a colossal plate of lasagna. Preposterous? Ridiculous? Funny? Yes. Yes. Yes.
The School Library Journal recommends this book for grades six and up; it requires the mental gymnastics and reasoning skills of an older, more capable reader. They suggest that Gifted and Talented students will have a field day with this book, and I agree.

The palindromes themselves are terrific, but many of the cartoons standing alone are monkey barrels of fun and amusement.

This is the kind of book one reads multiple times, often to find surprises in the cartoons missed the first time around.

Even the price listed on the back cover is a palindrome. Good luck finding a new copy for that price.
This book's measurements of 5.3 by 8.1 by .5 inches are also palindromic. Incredibly its perimeter dimensions are exactly the same when measured clockwise or counterclockwise!

I thoroughly enjoyed this linguistic lollipop that ends too soon; it's satisfying to the last lick, lingers languidly on the palate, and whets one's appetite for more Jon Agee treats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Hilarious
I have loved this clever book of palindromes ever since I got in in elementary school about fifteen years ago. This hilarious book is chock-full of inventive palindromes, which are each accompanied by a great black-and-white drawing. One of my favorites shows a little girl in a karate outfit, standing next to her karate instructor. Her mom is there, as well. The palindrome says, "Amy? Must I jujitsu my Ma?"

Also, check out Jon Agee's latest book on word-play, Orangutan Tongs: Poems to Tangle Your Tongue.

Both the text and drawings of this book will have you in stitches, and keep you wondering. While seemingly simplistic, the small phrases like "FLEX, ELF" accompanied by a drawing of a dwarf desperately trying to muster up to large cloned muscle men are absolutely hilarious. If you love words, language, and a sharp wit, this is the book for you.Truly one you will want to return to again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Word lovers rejoice!
Anyone fascinated by the world of words will be amazed by this wonderful little book. Although small, it's packed cover-to-cover with palindromes and anagrams, beyond your wildest dreams. This is one of those unique books you hold on to for a lifetime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Palindromes and mirror symmetry
The relationship of language to mathematics ( in symbolic and linguistic terms) seems important. When there is a mirror as in palindromes,
there is actually twice the number of symbols to the amount of information..?
The anagram humor and the neat palindromic poetry are very entertaining in this volume, but one might have hoped for more, like type of symbols used byDan Brown and some cryptography or bible code references maybe?
Also more mathematical analysis. more serious poetry and real anagrams from history might have been enlightening?
But seriously the text was well written, original and interesting, worth the effort of reading it, and the anagram humor madeup for many minor faults.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book of Its Kind I Know
This short, inexpensive book contains the best collection of anagrams and palindromes I have ever seen.My copy is dog-eared from repeated use.The book contains an enormous amount of top-notch palindromes that are far from over-familiar.Some samples:

* A new order began; a more Roman age bred Rowena.
* A dog, a pant, a panic in a Patna pagoda.

Those samples may strike you as silly and meaninglesss, in which you are not a palindrome person, and this book is not for you.Or they may make you want to see more, in which case you should definitely buy this book. The palindromes by J.A. Lindon, which make up the book's grand finale chapter, are amazing tours de force.

Trust me -- this book has the goods. If you are a wordplay enthusiast, you'll love it.If you know one (perhaps a co-worker), it could make a great inexpensive gift.Strongly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for wordplay enthusiasts.
Howard W. Bergerson, former editor of Word Ways: The Journal of Recreational Linguistics, presents more than a thousand anagrams and hundreds of palindromes (with sources, where known).

This volume (aninspiration for many books including Michaelsen's "Words at Play"and Jon Agee's collections) is a must for wordplay enthusiasts, especiallythose with a penchant for these particular curiosities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read, Dear
The word palindrome is derived from the Greek word palindromos that means running back again. A palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same in both directions. Some elementary examples are: RACECAR, DEED, LEVEL, MADAM, RADAR.The words are spelled the same and read the same from either direction. It wouldn't be too difficult to come up with a list of words with like properties. The challenge comes in creating longer strings of words with the palindromic pedigree that also make some kind of sense.

Jon Agee's pen and ink drawings illustrate and clarify his palindromes, some of which seem to be nonsensical. The subject matter varies widely - businessmen, computer geeks, children, animals, cowboys, musicians, elves, and kings all targets of Agee's insane humor. For the palindrome of the title, we see little Otis sitting on an upside down frying pan with whole spuds lying around him on the floor.Later we see a grocer with a cart full of fruits, all boxed and clearly labeled. The grocer while pushing his cart is announcing to all " No lemons, no melon! We see a large billboard emblazoned with the words "Fruit of the Year."The image of a huge, smiling papaya wearing a fruit of the year sash looks down from the billboard at three little fruits, one of which says ruefully, "NO WAY A PAPAYA WON."

I very much enjoyed"Sit on a Potato, Otis", enough to go around the block with it several more times, each time discovering a little nuance in the illustrations I had missed the previous times around. This is a book with appeal for all ages, though it may be too sophisticated for the very young to understand or appreciate. I would have liked to have seen a listing of the palindromes in the front of the book first so that I could have tried to imagine how they could have been illustrated. This might add another layer of fun to this incredibly enjoyable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immensely creative and witty
This book has been thoroughly enjoyed by our whole family, even our kindergarten son.The palindromes are amazingly creative and are brought to life by the clever illustrations.Palindromes that might not make sense in isolation are paired up with funny pictures that make perfect sense. This would be a great gift for anyone who appreciates creativity with the written word.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must if you love wordplay
While I took this book from the children's shelf of our local library, this "older" kid still loved it. The palindromes are funny and the cartoons that accompany them are well drawn and relate to the palindrome. My favorite is the extension of the classic, "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama" , "A man, a plan, a cat, a bar, a cap, a mall, a ball, a map, a car, a bat, a canal: Panama."Palindromes that are a sensible statement are not easy to write, so the author is to be commended in his ingenuity in constructing such wonders, especially some of the longer ones.
This is a book that can clearly be enjoyed by children of all ages and as soon as I am done with this review, I will be handing it over to my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars More wordsmithing from the Palindrome master!!
Jon Agee may be best known for his illustration of children's books ("The Halloween House", "If Snow Falls").However, he has also proven himself a proficient wordsmith, easily and playfully pulling words all apart and putting them together."Sit on a Potato Pan" is one of five books delighting in the oddities English spelling.

Palindromes are words or phrases that are spelled the same way forwards as backwards.Take the title of the book and spell it backwards, and it's the exact same title!!These things are not easy to create, and the longer the phrase the more difficult it is to both spell backwards and still make sense. The fact that "Sit...Otis!" is one of THREE books of palindromes by Mr. Agee only proves his genius at manipulating words and letters.

Like his other two books of palindromes, "So Many Dynamos!" and "Go Hang a Salami! I'm a Lasagna Hog!" (now THERE'S one that must have taken a few days to create!!), "Sit...Otis!" is illustrated with wonderful drawings that make the palindrome live and sparkle. For example, in one of my personal favorites, two gents in the Old West are looking at a wanted poster.Pictures of large cats are on the wanted poster, and one man says to the other, "darn ocelots stole Conrad". Another is of three men staring at 9 little pieces of scribbled on paper. They make their own notes about them, and the caption is "some men interpret nine memos".

Needless to say, these things are not easy to write!!Especially the longer, more complicated ones like "naive was I ere I saw Evian" and the one that makes the title of this book. While not a book geared for young children, students in, say, third grade and above would no doubt get a kick out of these and other palindromes. With Mr. Agee as a guide, it's a perfect opportunity for students to go on and create their own. What else is Otis capable of?? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars was it a rat I saw?
Palindromes are, of course, words or phrases that are spelled the same backwards or forwards."So Many Dynamos!" is a palindrome as well-- go ahead, spell it backwards!!

Mr. Agee has collected some fantastically complicated and funny palindromes in this collection. All of them are illustrated, which add so much to the palindrome itself. For example, two rugged cowboys are running away from a huge pair of pants."Massive Levi's, Sam!" one man shouts to the other.Another of my favorites is of two scientists gazing through a massively huge microscope at something on a small slide. "snot or protons?" asks one scientist.

Making palindromes is no easy task, though there are hundreds of them.Mr. Agee has proven himself brilliant by not only putting them together, but illustrating some rather difficult ones that then make perfect sense (I'll let you find out what "No!Put egg getup on!" means...!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and entertaining
In any event, Jon Agee's extremely clever palindromes and accompanying illustrations are absolutely fantastic. My personal favorite is the papaya war, but you'll have to read it to understand. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book
Not the best book you'll ever read, but certainly somethig fun to pick up for someone's birthday, a young child, or an old child :) who's easily giggled by wordplay and cartoons. Think Far Side, focused on palindromes. I'm not sure if it thrives for as many pages as this goes, but it's agenerally enjoyable book. ... Read more

Language skills will fly through the air with the greatest of ease as kids join in The Circus of Words. Children of all ages are delighted by anagrams, palindromes, acrostics, alliteration, riddles, and puns, yet few books on wordplay are addressed to middle-schoolers. 4-0 out of 5 stars Palindromic wordplay for the child
I am a fan of wordplay, so this book was immediately interesting to me. The palindrome is one of the most interesting messages, since long one are very hard to create. People seem to have a natural interest in palindromes, as editor of Journal of Recreational Mathematics, I have seen many math papers with a specific interest in palindromic numbers.
The palindromes in this collection are all short and accompanied by an illustration. The illustrations really enhance the quality of the book, as they are simple in design, yet effective in their message. I recommend this book for all elementary school libraries.
