With so many different computer parts available, we think you will find it very helpful to have a short list of products you should consider. Even though our site in not designed for the hardcore system builder, we feel that we should recommend some general components you may need to select when building a new system or upgrading an old one. Processors, motherboards, and memory are usually tightly coupled. Even though you may want to move these components to a new computer, you may run into compatibility problems. Even if you don't, you'll probably degrade performance. These components will be obsolete fairly quickly, so if they need replacing or upgrading, it may be better to buy a whole new system. CPU Most mainstream users will be fine with processors of at least 800 Mhz. Higher end workstations and servers will want the fastest multiprocessor capable systems. Avoid standalone OEM CPUs as they do not have full multi year manufacture warranties nor do they include fans. CPUs can and do fail. As a guide, you should only upgrade if you can at least double your CPU megahertz.
