Extractions: Back to Top The PhD in Statistics This program has been designed to train graduates to develop and apply modern statistical techniques. The foundation is a sequence of courses in probability, mathematical statistics, statistical computing, and linear models and experimental design. The program also permits study in a cognate area of application and involvement in consulting and data analysis with investigators from other disciplines. Work on actual problems reinforces the classroom treatment of statistical methods, provides motivation for developing new statistical techniques, and often is a source of research problems for the doctoral dissertation. Graduates of the doctoral program are well equipped for faculty appointments in universities and colleges, either in statistics departments or in a management faculty. In addition, many PhD graduates take posts in business, government, and biomedical organizations.

Topics include probability axioms, discrete and continuous sample spaces, random variables, mathematical expectation, probability functions; densities, basic discrete and continuous distribution functions; functions of random variables and their distributions. Also covered is Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and Linear regression. Software such as SAS or Minitab will be used for testing and regression problems. The course will provide students with a mathematical approach to probability theory based on Calculus. Connections between probability theory and statistical methods will be established via the Central Limit Theorem; Basic statistical procedures will be introduced. Students are expected to know why and how such procedures are developed and to be able to apply these procedures to solve real life problems. A brief introduction to SAS will augment students to solve more complicated problems.

Extractions: Janet Andersen has taught at Hope College since 1991 and is in her third year as chair of the mathematics department. She is currently PI for an NSF funded project to create a team-taught sophomore-level mathematical biology course. Her first NSF curriculum grant led to the publication of Projects for Precalculus and Precalculus: A Study of Functions and Their Applications (both works authored jointly with Todd Swanson, Hope College, and Robert Keeley, Calvin College) while her second grant led to the development of a general education mathematics course paired with two science courses (one in ecology and one in atmospheric science). Janet is also the director of the PEW Midstates Science and Mathematics Consortium and the chair of the MAA Committee on the Teaching of Undergraduate Mathematics. She is currently teaching Abstract Algebra. Aaron Cinzori is in his second year at Hope College. His specialty is applied mathematics ill-posed problems in particular. He has also worked as a commodities analyst. Aaron has advised undergraduate research projects involving differential equations, linear algebra, optimization, and number theory. He is also one of the coaches of Hope's mathematics competition teams. His recreational interests include triathlon, music, gaming, reading and playing with his wife and son. This year he is teaching Calculus and Advanced Differential Equations.
