In the spring of 1860, the Pony Express hired 80 young men to carry the U.S. mail on horseback between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. The route was 1,966 miles long, and the Pony Express promised to deliver the mail within 10 days. Each Pony Expressman rode a horse 15 miles and then switched horses. After riding 75 miles, the rider passed his mailbag (a mochila) to the next rider. Along the route, the Pony Express riders faced the winds on the prairies of Kansas and Nebraska, crossed the Sweetwater River in Wyoming, traversed the hot deserts of Utah and Nevada, and climbed the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. In the 1850's, before the Pony Express was established, it was a difficult journey to carry the mail between Salt Lake City, Utah, and California. Some men never completed the trip. Some might have been wounded or killed by unfriendly Native Americans, and some might have frozen to death in the deep snow. Others who completed the trip took up to fifty-three days to arrive in Salt Lake City.

Description: Lasting barely 20 months, the Pony Express was one of the briefest and most romantic episodes in the brief and romantic history of the American West. Until 1860, it took 26 to 30 days to get the mail from New York to California. Beginning as it did in April, 1860, the Pony Express carried the news of the most tumultuous events in American history to the West. Westerners first learned of Abraham Lincoln's election, the succession of the Confederate States of America, and the firing on Fort Sumter from Pony Express riders. But even in the 19th Century romance gave way to technology. On October 24, 1861, the first transcontinental telegraph line was completed, and within a month the Pony Express ended its operations forever.

Until 1858, when the Overland Stage Line between San Francisco and St. Louis was established, the only direct connection between San Francisco and New York was via Panama–4,000 miles away by water. Once every fortnight great crowds gathered in San Francisco on "Steamer Day" to meet the incoming steamers that brought mail and newspapers, which often took anywhere from six months to a year to get around Cape Horn (South America) or via the Isthmus of Panama. At this time, more than half a million people lived west of the Rocky Mountains and it was slow and difficult for them to communicate with family, friends, and businesses in the East. They demanded better and faster mail service and more timely news of the rest of the country. In 1857, Congress awarded a $600,000 contract to the Overland Mail Company, owned primarily by John Butterfield and William G. Fargo. The Overland Mail Company provided a twice-a-week service between St. Louis or Memphis and San Francisco; each run was to be made in twenty-five days. Later, Wells Fargo incorporated this Overland Mail route into the grandest of all stage lines and became one of the most famous companies in the West.

Prior to the Coach and Pony Express mail delivery, time from the east to the westby ship down the Gulf of Mexico, across Panama by mule, then by ship again up to San Franciscomight take six weeks, and if the winds were off, eight weeks. With the discovery of gold in California in 1848, and the increasing political tensions of the 1850s which led to the Civil War, it became imperative to keep the far West in the Union by providing a more dependable source of information from the East. News was very slow in reaching eager California readers, and a standing joke of the time was that events in the East had already been forgotten by the time they were known by those out West. The solution to this problem came from a businessman of vision, William Russell. Russell owned a stage and freight company based in Leavenworth, Kansas (with partners A. Majors and W.B. Waddell). While on a promotional trip to Washington to help his ailing freight line, Russell and Senator William Gwin of California discussed the possibilities of an Express Mail Company to deliver mail to California by the Central Route along the Oregon and California Trail. Initially the stage express line was comprised of fifty coaches and extended about eight hundred miles. By February 1860, when the line was extended from Salt Lake City across Utah and Nevada to California, efficiency had improved the mail delivery time to a respectable number of days. However, financial losses were staggering, no government subsidies came through, and something was needed to promote the Central Route.
