They took an oath on the Bible of honesty and devotion to duty and went on, despite the daily threat of death, to carry the mail 616,000 milesequal to 24 times around the earthduring the 18 months the enterprise oper-ated. In doing so, they wrote the unforgettable chapter of "The Pony Express" into American History. The Pony Express was a horse relay mail carrying system operating in both directions between Missouri and California. The service carried the mail in 10 days from St. Joseph to Sacramento, and cut in half the time required to send mail by coach. It continued for 18 months, from April 1860 until October 1861, when the cross-country telegraph was completed. In all, 308 runs were made each way, delivering 34,753 pieces of mail. Postage was $5 per half ounce at first, but was later reduced to $1 a half ounce. Each run carried up to 20 pounds of mail. Most accounts in-dicate about 90 Pony Express rid-ers, 119 relay stations and 500 horses were used at one time or an-other during the 18 months.

Extractions: 1860 to 1861- The Pony Express Benicia was not on the regular Pony Express Route, but when the riders' missed their steamer connection to San Francisco from Sacramento, they took the alternative route through Solano County. This happened a total of 19 times in the 19 month history of the Pony Express. Benicia was a busy steamer port of call and ferry station which made it an ideal place for the riders to take the ferry to Martinez and then on to Oakland and then the ferry to San Francisco. There was a total of 190 stations and up to 300 station keepers and stock tenders. There were three kinds of stations; Home stations where riders were exchanged and accommodations for them to rest, Swing stations to change horses, and Way stations which were mail drops. 300 of the finest, fastest horses were selected since they would have to travel 10 miles in an hour, however some stations were as far apart as 25 or 30 miles. In the life of the Pony Express, over 200 riders participated, including Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill. One of the first riders was William F. The Hollenberg Pony Express Station is thought to be the only Pony Express Station in the nation to have been preserved and left on its original location, making it a unique part of American history and a proud part of Kansas' history. The telegraph office equipment consisted of two HF transceivers, an Alinco DX-70T and a Yaesu FT101E both running about 80 W of power, in addition to a Kenwood TM631A 2m/220MHz rig. A Chushcraft R5 vertical was used to support 20-m and 17-m operation, an inverted-V dipole was used for 40m and a simple quarterwave groundplane antenna was used on 2 meters. All radios were operated off battery power, as were two fans, which proved to be RFI generators! To make the "Telegraph Office" sound authentic, an old telegraph sounder was frequently connected to the output of the radio to turn the dits and dahs into clicks and clunks.
