Extractions: Volume 5, No. 3 - September 2001 SISYPHUS' NEWSSTAND: THE IRANIAN PRESS UNDER KHATAMI By A.W. Samii Editor's Summary: Despite the election of President Muhammad Khatami, Iranian conservatives continue to target the press there, using the institutions they control. Indeed, arrests, persecutions, and harassment of the independent-minded and reformist media has increased as the anti-Khatami faction struggles to hold onto power. Khatami has been unwilling or unable to respond. This is a case study of how effectively those opposing democracy and change can wield their assets. Four years ago it looked like things would turn out much differently. The election of Hojatoleslam Mohammad Khatami in May 1997 and his appointment of Ataollah Mohajerani as Islamic Culture and Guidance Minister led to expectations of a blossoming of the Iranian press. Indeed, in the first year of Khatami's presidency, 226 publications received licenses. But at the same time, newspapers were closed for violating vague and unevenly enforced regulations. As one editor complained: "Every time the press in Iran is warned by officials, we are told that we have crossed a red line, although no one has bothered to tell us where that red line is."(1) Journalists were tried, incarcerated, and sometimes prevented from practicing their profession. Others were murdered or just vanished from the face of the earth. Shortly before its final session, the fifth parliament strengthened the press law and defined the "red line" more clearly. The new law was used to close some 13 publications in one week in April 2000, and at least 44 publications by April 2001. And when the new, predominantly-reformist, sixth parliament tried to change the press law in August 2000, Supreme Leader Khamenei blocked the debate.

It also features Dohrn, his wife and director of the Northwestern Law School's Children and Family Justice Center. Days had already captured some attention. A book recounting the actions of a violent group which set off bombs in the Pentagon was sure to stir up one of those battles over the legacy of the '60s that appear on Op-Ed pages every few years. But when Lower Manhattan came under attack, it was unlikely that the subjects of an article "Life with the Weathermen: No Regrets for a Love of Explosives" would go unnoticed. The story of the Weather Underground begins in 1969 with the breakup of Students for a Democratic Society. SDS was founded as a leftist student organization at the dawn of the 1960s, a combination of groups at the University of Michigan, Yale and Columbia universities bolstered by the civil rights movement. The group came of age in 1962 with the drafting of the Port Huron Statement, a declaration pledging to "seek the establishment of a democracy of individual participation."

SHERIDAN'S democratic reform news POLITICAL DIARY 1999 R. W. Mann 28 November 1999 REFORM PARTY V.P. CANDIDATE DEFENDS JOHN McCAIN AGAINST SMEAR CAMPAIGN. Admiral James B. Stockdale, who was Ross Perot's running mate in 1992, yesterday defended presidential candidate John McCain against anonymous charges being circulated in the press that he is "psychologically unfit" to be president as a result of five and one-half years of captivity as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Stockdale, himself a P.O.W. for eight years, declared, "I think John McCain is solid as a rock. And I consider it a blasphemy to smudge the straight-arrow prisoner-of-war record" of McCain. According to the Associated Press, Stockdale's remarks were made in reply to a telephone call from a Bush supporter asking him to comment on McCain's "weaknesses." 18 November 1999 CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR SAYS PAT BUCHANAN SUPPORTS REFORM PARTY PRINCIPLES AND PLATFORM. Tim Haley, Political Director of the Buchanan 2000 campaign has disassociated Pat Buchanan and his campaign staff from a recent message published on the Internet by a one-time Buchanan staffer.
