Bread is a traditional Polish food. After summer harvest in villages all over the country farmers have a special celebration day called Dozynki, day of the end of harvest. That day, people gather together to sing, dance, thank God and taste the first bread made from 'seeds of the summer'. Polish cuisine is characterised by dishes with a well-defined taste. They can be hot, sweet or sour. It is impossible to cook the Polish style without using some of the following ingredients: sauerkraut, vegetables, fruit and fresh or dried mushrooms. The main meal in the Polish culinary tradition is Obiad, which is eaten early in the afternoon. A normal Obiad would consist of soup, the main course and also dessert. A Typical Polish meal Soup usually starts off the meal. Barszcz or red beet soup, served with stuffed dumplings, or fermented rye soup: Zurek or chlodnik, a cold beet and vegetables in sour milk soup, which is available only in the summer. Some other soups are occasionally available and these include grzybowa (wild mushroom), ogórkowa (pickle) and kapusniak (cabbage). Appetisers include smoked salmon (losos wedzony) or smoked eel (wegorz wedzony) as well as a variety of aspic dishes, herring (sledz) in various forms, salmon, caviar and the authentic Polish cold cuts and sausages.

Until World War II, because Poland was an area of multinational settlement, it drew not only on the dominant Polish culture but also on that of the minorities, especially the Germans, Jews, and Ruthenians. The common Slavic element traditionally has been weak, but aspects of it can be identified in language, literature, and folklore. The formative experience, undoubtedly, was the adoption of Roman Catholicism in the 10th century and the resultant millennium of involvement in Western civilization. The great periods of Western cultural and intellectual expression are paralleled by the history of Polish creativity. The Italian Renaissance inspired a great burst of culture in Poland. The Reformation sped the development of a Polish vernacular literature, and in the 18th and 19th centuries Poles were greatly influenced by French culture. During the Stalinist period, which lasted in Poland from 1949 to 1955, artistic freedom was severely circumscribed by the government. After 1956 Polands cultural policies became generally more liberal. The Roman Catholic church in Poland has played a social and cultural role far beyond the religious sphere. After World War II, catechism lessons, conducted with great zeal in the parishes, exposed children to a nonofficial view of the world. Church-sponsored societies, such as the Catholic Intellectual Clubs, provided adults with a unique forum for free public discussion. Parish halls provided shelter for a wide variety of uncensored exhibitions, plays, films, and meetings.

The idea of creating a maritime museum in Gdansk began to take shape in 1958. The exhibition "From the oar to atomic power" organized in the famous Artus Court in Gdansk In September of that same year was the beginning. The Museum formally came into existence on 1 October 1960, but it had to start right from scratch, having neither a collection nor a building to house it. Now, the main buildings of the Museum are in the heart of the old port of Gdansk on the river Motlawa. They include a number of typical port buildings situated on both sides of the river. On the right bank the Museum's organizers have reconstructed a group of granaries from the 15 th th centuries, as well as about 200 metres of the adjacent quayside, where the museum ship "Soldek", the first steamship built in Poland after the Second World War, is now moored. On the left bank the Museum complex includes a medieval port crane and the adjacent burghers' houses adapted to the Museum's purposes. For the convenience of visitors, the Museum buildings on either side of the river are linked by the Museum's ferry, the "Motlawa". The museum has three branches outside Gdansk: the Vistula River Museum at Tczew, the Fisheries Museum at Hel and the Museum-ship "Dar Pomorza" in Gdynia. The Museums collections contain artifacts, documents and a library. The displays illustrate the history of port construction, boatyards and ship-building, the history of shipping and maritime trade, fisheries, the history of Polish yachting, marine art etc.

Kórnik
K³rnik is situated in a glacial valley which stretches over 20 km and consists of 9 joint lakes. The town of K³rnik is favourably located at the important junction which is the meeting point of two roads, one leading from Pozna± to Katowice the other from Pozna± to WrocÂ³aw. Extractions: The Kórnik arboretum which borders on the castle is a former Italian garden dating back to the 16th century which was then changed to a French garden in the 18th century. After 1830 the park was enlarged and changed again. This time into an arboretum with unique collection of trees. In the east, the old part of the arboretum borders on the new extension (8.5 ha) which was created in the years 1963-67. About 3,000 species and varieties of European, Asiatic and American trees and shrubs grow in the Kórnik Arboretum, which is one of the richest in Europe. It is also the place where a dendrological museum is located. The signposted "Kórnik Route" has been developed at the request of the SSTA (State Sports and Tourism Administration) by the Dutch and German automobile clubs ANWB and ADAC. It has been financed from the resources of the European Union. Spare a day for an 80 km round-tour along the route marked with the brown hexagonal signs to discover the cultural and historical heritage of the region and enjoy the natural beauty and picturesque landscape of the Wielbopolski National Park. A fatigued or hungry traveller will find some hotels, restaurants and parking places along the route.

Extractions: Beginning through the Age of Greatness Polish history began in the early 9th century when the Polians (dwellers in the field) obtained hegemony over the others Slavic tribes that occupied the country. Their principal dynasty (PIAST) accepted Christianity in 966. Poznan was the earliest Polish capital and Gniezno the first Episcopal see. The main line of the Piast dynasty ended in 1370 with Casimir III, and the crown passed to Casimir's nephew, Louis I of Hungary and to Louis's daughter Jadwiga. Jadwiga married Ladislaus (Wladyslaw) Jagiello , duke of Lithuania, who became king of Poland as Ladislaw II (Wladislaw) . The time 1386-1572 under Jagiello's power was considered the "golden age" of Poland. King Ladislaw III (Wladislaw) (killed) by the Turks in the battle of Warna (1444), gave Poland the prestige of championing the Christian cause against the Moslem tide. In 1569 Poland absorbed Lithuania by the Union of Lublin. After 1572 no dynasty maintained itself for long, and the theory that the entire nobility could take part in the royal elections, applied in practice, frequently led to contested elections and civil wars. There was considerable religious toleration in 16th century Poland, and the progress of Protestantism was arrested without coercion by the Jesuits. Much of the reigns of

SOCIAL STRUCTURES Polish society, since World War II, has been transformed by two great movements: by the growth of a dominant, urban, industrialized working class and by the continuing drift of peasants from the rural areas into towns and cities. Whereas in 1946 there were nearly twice as many people in the countryside as in towns, the two numbered equally in the late 1960s, and by the mid-1990s the 1946 position had been reversed. So-called peasant workers, who tended to live on the fringes of industrial regions, contrived to benefit from both movements: while one part of the family maintained the farm, other family members earned wages in local factories. Development under the communist government stressed the classless and proletarian nature of society. However, peasants resisted the collectivization of their holdings, and about 2.5 million small farms remained in private ownership throughout the communist period. Some development of a privately owned, small-scale service industry was also allowed under communism. The party elite formed a third group, enjoying a range of privileges unavailable to ordinary workers. Since 1989, in contrast, Polish society has become much more differentiated. Many private businesses have been established, and a small number of people have become wealthy. Many elderly people on fixed incomes, however, have suffered sharp falls in their standard of living.
