Extractions: This is a digital version of the Atlas of the Vascular Plants of Utah authored by Beverly J. Albee, Leila M. Shultz, and Sherel Goodrich, published by the Utah Museum of Natural History, 1988. The original document consists of maps of the state of Utah showing collection locations for 2,438 documented plant species. The authors critically examined approximately 400,000 specimens during a seven year time span to create the original paper atlas. Each location contained in the original atlas was hand-digitized into a Geographic Information System. This database contains over 72,000 individual collection locations within the state of Utah. PSILOTOPHYTA (WHISK FERNS) The subphylum Psilotophyta (Psilophyta or Psilopsida) represents the most primitive vascular plants. These plants arose in the Silurian and Devonian and are characterized by the presence of tracheids, but they lack true roots or leaves. The group is probably completely extinct, although two genera ( Psilotum and Tmesipteris , neither found in North America) are sometimes placed as members of this primitive group.

Extractions: The Pullen Herbarium was founded in 1963 in the Department of Biology, and the collection now consists of over 62,000 vascular plant specimens, mainly from Mississippi and the southeastern United States. Thomas M. Pullen, the first curator, collected extensively in northern Mississippi, and several of his students conducted county floras. Specimens made by Samuel B. Jones, then of the University of Southern Mississippi, are abundant. The Pullen Herbarium also includes the historically important collections of E.N. Lowe, A. Allison and T.L. Bailey from around the late 1800's and early 1900's. A collection of 473 bryophytes and lichens from around the United States includes an entire set of Mississippi specimens made by A.M. Harvill, L.E. Anderson, R.M. Schuster and J.C. Wilkes. PLACE is a database of motifs found in plant cis-acting regulatory DNA elements, all from previously published reports. It covers vascular plants only. In addition to the motifs originally reported, their variations in other genes or in other plant species reported later are also compiled. The PLACE database also contains a brief description of each motif and relevant literature with PubMed ID numbers. DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank nucleotide sequence databases accession numbers will be also included. Information on cis-elements can also be obtained by Keyword Search .
