    Extractions: The Botanical Society of the British Isles is for everyone who is interested in the flora of Britain and Ireland. The society traces its origins back to 1836, when it was founded as the Botanical Society of London. From its earliest days it has welcomed both professional and amateur members, and it remains the biggest and most active organisation devoted to the study of botany in the British Isles. The BSBI produces national Atlases and county Floras of the distribution of plants. It publishes a scientific journal, Watsonia, and holds conferences on botany. Members are kept informed by a newsletter three times a year and are invited to make use of our system of county recorders and national referees who can help with the identification of plants. Field meetings are held throughout Britain and Ireland, and sometimes abroad. An education programme supported by the society aims brings high quality botanical training within the reach of all, from A Level students to professional development and postgraduate courses. Formerly known as Somosomo, Taveuni ranks third in size and is one of the finest islands of Fiji. It is entirely a volcanic formation. Lying southeast of sister island Vanua Levu , it is 26 miles long and about an average of 7 miles in width, rising symmetrically on both sides to a backbone ridge. At its highest point is Mount Uluiqalau (4,040 feet), notable because it is exactly under the 180th Meridian, 12 hours east and west from Greenwich. In the high mountains of Taveuni there is a beautiful lake of considerable size, pouring through an outlet on the west. This stream furnishes the township of Somosomo with a good supply of fresh water. A smaller outlet to the east discharges enough water to form a small cascade. A flowering plant called Tagimaucia, is found only on the shores of this lake - all attempts to transplant it to lower altitudes has failed. The plant has bunches of flowers, red with a white entree, and is the most beautiful of all the Fijian wild flowers. Every characteristic of Fijian scenery is found on Taveuni, while all of the tropical trees, fruits and vegetables are produced here in abundance. At one time, Sea Island cotton, arrowroot and cinchona had been produced on the island but its main product is now copra. When the American expedition under Wilkes visited, Taveuni's inhabitants, the most savage tribe in the archipelago were feared by all the islands, and on Taveuni, cannibalism prevailed to a greater extent than anywhere else. A road extends the full length of the lee or northwest coast from Vuna in the south to Wainibula in the north.

The newly discovered remains of the oldest, most complete flowering plant show it lived at least 125 million years ago, most likely underwater, said University of Florida (UF) paleobotanist David Dilcher. The discovery is reported in Friday's issue of the journal Science and was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). "This Lower Cretaceous fossil challenges many assumptions about the origins of flowering plants," said Quentin Wheeler, director of NSF's division of environmental biology, which funded the research. "Such fossil discoveries combine with advances in the analysis of molecular and morphological evidence from living plants to provide a classification that is the conceptual framework for evolutionary biology." Although it had no petals, there is no question it was a flowering plant because of the presence of seeds enclosed in an immature fruit, a trait separating flowering plants from all other seed plants, he said.

One of the great mysteries of evolutionary biology is how, 150 or more million years ago, modern-day angiosperms (flowering plants) diverged from their closest relatives, the gymnosperms (seed-bearing plants without flowers, such as pine trees with pine cones). A developmental study of the water lily, Nuphar polysepalum , may provide an important clue. Joseph Williams and William Friedman of the University of Colorado report their National Science Foundation (NSF) supported findings in the January 31 issue of the journal Nature . "This is a significant first-time discovery because now we are a big step closer to understanding the evolution of flowering plants," says Erik Nilsen, the NSF project officer.

Dicot plants range from tiny plants to tremendous trees; fleshy succulents to delicate herbs that dry out almost as soon as they're picked; large and complex flower heads to tiny flowers that barely deserve the name; annuals and perenials; deciduous and evergreen. Each plant can be described with 100 features including size, shape, color, and features of the entire plant, leaves, flowers, and fruit. Around 300 families of flowering plants are currently identified as Dicots. Learning the intricacies of the Subclasses, Superorders, and Orders is of limited value for the typical naturalist. Nevertheless, the Family groupings are quite helpful. Here are some of the most prominent herb and shrub families in our region and probably most temperate areas. The Sunflower family contains the largest number of plant species in the San Francisco Bay Area and many other parts of the world. The Sunflower family includes shrubs such as Coyotebrush as well as herbs such as Sunflowers, Daisies, Asters, Thistles, and Dandelions. All of these plants have compound flower heads. While it appears to be a single flower, closer examination reveals that the head is composed of many separate flowers: tiny five-petalled "disk flowers" in the center and/or single-petalled "ray flowers" around the outside. Dandelions have only ray flowers; Thistles and Coyotebrush have only disk flowers; Sunflowers and Daisies have both.
