The prairies that helped develop the highly productive soils have been reduced by more than 99 percent. About 95 percent of the state's prairie pothole wetlands have been drained. Over half of the original forest has been lost. These changes and other factors such as channelization of streams and rivers, soil erosion, development and urban expansion, and intensive row crop agriculture have contributed to the loss or degradation of suitable habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Individual species of plants and animals may contribute to the survival of other species within a community. The loss of what appears to be an unimportant species may result in the decline or loss of species that we consider to be very important. If we ignore species that are in danger of being extirpated from Iowa, we may be making decisions that cannot be reversed in the future. Conserving these species for future generations requires the coordinated effort by public agencies, private organizations, and property owners. Extractions: Cicindela dorsalis dorsalis The Wildlife and Heritage Service Natural Heritage Program tracks the status of over 1,100 native plants and animals that are among the rarest in Maryland and most in need of conservation efforts as elements of our State's natural diversity. Of these species, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources officially recognizes 659 species and subspecies as endangered, threatened, in need of conservation, or endangered extirpated. Only 37, or 3% of the total tracked species, are listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as nationally endangered or threatened. The primary State law that allows and governs the listing of endangered species is the Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act (Annotated Code of Maryland 10-2A-01). This Act is supported by regulations (Code of Maryland Regulations 08.03.08) which contain the official State Threatened and Endangered Species list.

Extractions: Nesting colonies of the endangered least tern and threatened piping plover are documented and monitored to determine reproductive success and to delineate essential nesting habitat. Data is used to identify management practices necessary for restoration of the two species. River sandbars have been cleared of vegetation to provide suitable nesting habitat. Nesting colonies susceptible to human disturbance are posted with signs to prevent intrusions. Wintering bald eagle concentrations and whooping crane migration stopover sites are being documented and monitored so that threatened, essential habitat can be protected. Research on the swift fox, blow-out penstemon least tern and mountain plover , conducted by universities under contract with the Game and Parks Commission, has identified factors limiting the survival of species, and has helped determine how the species can be restored or how further population declines can be prevented. The endangered blow-out penstemon is now being propagated in University of Nebraska greenhouses and successfully transplanted to suitable habitat in the Nebraska Sandhills.

Extractions: The plants and environments of the South Florida region represent a key priority of Fairchild Tropical Garden. Conservation activities include endangered species status surveys, monitoring and mapping of populations of endangered and threatened species, habitat-level vegetation inventories for sites of conservation concern, ecological studies of endangered species, species-level studies of reproductive biology and cultivation requirements, and reinstating populations of endangered species in the wild. Collections In 1989, the Garden formalized a program focused on Florida and Caribbean conservation research, emphasizing the study of endangered plants from the region. As part of the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) consortium of botanic gardens and arboreta, Fairchild Tropical Garden maintains a collection of more than 4,000 plants of about 100 species of endangered, threatened or rare plant species of South Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S.Virgin Islands. Twenty-two federally listed endangered and/or threatened species are conserved in the Fairchild endangered species collection. The Fairchild Endangered Species Program follows collection guidelines established by the CPC's Science Advisory Council, which strongly emphasizes the preservation of wild populations. The reasons for the loss of species are complex but include habitat changes due to historic settlement and development activities, environmental contamination, displacement by introduced species, as well as current land uses that continue to adversely affect the abundance and diversity of plants and wildlife. Federal and state governments have developed a multi-level process for identifying species at risk and implementing conservation actions. The Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) provides the most well-known, systematic, and stringent process for identifying and conserving threatened and endangered species. The ESA requires that specific measures be taken to protect species that become listed, proposed for listing, or candidates for listing under the law. These species are referred to as having "Federal Status." In addition to implementing conservation actions under the Endangered Species Act, BLM and state governments administer programs that seek to identify and conserve declining species before population or habitat losses reach critical levels. In consultation with biologists and state wildlife agencies, each BLM state office periodically publishes a list of species occurring on public lands whose populations or habitats are rare or in significant decline. The plants and animals on these lists are called "BLM Sensitive Species."
