Back Our teaching methodology lets the student to have an adequate mental image of field vegetative characteristics of tropical plant families and genera. Based on that mental image it is possible to easely learn taxonomic characteristics of such families and genera. For example, after a person knows the Rubiaceae species by their field vegetative characteristics (leaves simple, entire, opposite or whorled, connate interpetiolar stipules) he/she will easily and fast observe in the field and will learn that most of Rubiaceae, for instance, have: bisexual flowers, inferior ovary, gamopetalous corolla, 4-5 stamens adnate to the corolla. On the contrary, when a person does NOT know leaf and twig field characteristics of Rubiaceae, it will be harder for he/she to functionally learn characteristics of flowers and fruits of this family. It is noticeable that also knowledges related to species uses, geographical distribution, biological forms, relationships among plants animals and environment, etc., are easily realized and mastered after our Dendrology courses. Therefor, some professors -including myself- have started recommend the students to first learn to recognize tropical plants by their field characteristics (as we do in Dendrology courses) and, after that, take courses or study flower and fruit characteristics (as it is done in Plant Taxonomy courses).

Those with paired seed leaves are Dicotyledonous plants, or dicots for short. Monocotyledonous plants have but one seed leaf. Grasses, orchids and sedges are monocots. This article, though lengthy, is but a very short introduction to the taxonomy of dicots. The basic hierarchy of nomenclature begins with Form, and progresses to Variety, Subspecies, Species, Subgenus, Genus, Subfamily, Family and Order. In the interest of brevity, only Order, Family and Genus will be considered here. The common names of families and genera are noted, except where the usual common name is the same as the botanical name. There are practical horticultural benefits of knowing familial and ordinal relationships. For example, if Fireblight has killed photinias in your landscape, you should avoid other members of the Family Rosaceae, since all can be affected. If you appreciate the nitrogen-fixing ability of the Legumes in your vegetable garden and want others for your landscape, select from the listing of genera of the Fabaceae, the Legume Family. Aesthetically, if a certain flower form appeals to you, include more members of the same family in your plantings. The Aristolochiaceae, Asclepiadaceas, Passifloraceae and Rutaceae families include caterpillar food sources for some of the most attractive butterflies. Include hardy members of their genera if you want a "butterfly factory" surrounding your house. And finally, you might want to "keep it in the family" and grow an entire bed or border with plants from just one Family.

Original data from the Conservation of Limestone Flora of Malaysia Project shows that in general traditional taxonomy is not meeting the needs of conservation because publication is too slow, specimens are not always distributed to local herbaria and links with local institutes and organisations may not exist. Strategies to overcome this include establishing self-funding biodiversity units in European herbaria, rapid publication of names of new taxa and combinations, non-traditional methods of publication for checklists, and the strengthening of a world-wide network of taxonomists and herbaria.
