Groot, Ph.D. Many of the plants that grace America's homes and gardens over the years have 'grown' their own loyal fan clubs organized to foster research on and promote their "favorites" and, in some cases, prevent them from extinction. A few of these plant societies are local in terms of geographic coverage but others have members throughout the United States and occasionally an international membership. One activity many of these plant societies carry out is to gather experiences from their members which then are collated into very useful growing tips for others interested in growing these plants. Usually, you can find this information on each society's website. One of the sites we checked out in more detail was that of the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society (AGGS) [ http://www.aggs.org/ ]. The site lists membership benefits and provides information on how to join the group. It includes information on local chapters, meetings, and the group's convention, and lets you order AGGS publications on line. The site recommends a list of reference books and provides information on how to propagate gloxinias and gesneriads. Also included in the site are bulletin boards where you can raise questions or post information about your experience in growing the plants. For those interested in growing the plants, the site also includes a "swap shop" for seeds and cuttings. If you still need more information, there is also a link to other websites with information about gesneriads.

    Extractions: Certainly one of the greatest benefits of gardening is when you can see all of your hard work pay off with such beautiful rewards. But another reward is the enjoyment of being able to share these benefits with others. For example, this time of year plant societies and clubs are interested in seeing what their members are growing. There are organizations for the enthusiast of virtually any plant group you can think of. It's important to remember that you don't have to grow anything to be members of these organizations. I'm a member of the American Iris Society. While I don't grow a lot of one type of iris, or grow them for competition and shows, I do have a wide variety in my garden. A member of the Society helped me choose a variety of Siberian iris that fits well into my garden. Other iris I grow include the traditional tall bearded. Making connections with other enthusiasts allows me to find unique varieties such as my antique iris from the 1840s. Visiting their gardens inspired me to use water iris and sweet flag in my garden pool.

The Denver Metro area is particularly abundant with active groups. Other areas of Colorado also have some local chapters. Some examples are the Denver Orchid Society, the Denver Rose Society, the North American Rock Garden Society-Rocky Mountain Chapter, the African Violet Society of Denver, the Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society, Xeriscape Colorado!, the Colorado Water Garden Society, and the Colorado Native Plant Society. In addition to meetings, most organizations publish informative newsletters, some go on field trips, and some are part of national organizations that also publish journals, organize trips and sponsor seed exchanges. But when I talk about plant societies, I am referring to the great number of diverse groups and organizations that are associated with horticulture but with programs, goals, and memberships of their own. These plant societies have a great influence on scientific horticulture, and they look to the horticultural scientist for expertise, cooperation, and assistance. We would do well to know them better. Horticultural science is one of the few academic disciplines that deals not only with its own agenda of science and research, but with the agenda of people, organizations, agencies, and societies that are associated with horticulture in some way. These people and their groups are large in number, diverse in skills and abilities, and equally diverse in their aims and goals. They include professional horticultural managers, such as landscape contractors, landscape maintenance managers, nurserymen and growers of horticultural plants; managers of street trees such as municipal arborists, electric utility companies, State and Federal foresters, urban foresters, and individual commercial arborists; and horticulturists interested in a particular plant or group of plants as a hobby interest.
