Area Plant Cell Biology - plant cell and developmental biology; calcium oxalate accumulation in specialized cells. Education Research Interests Teaching Assistantships/Positions Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Botany My research interests center around specialization of cells for calcium oxalate crystallization in plants. In my laboratory we intergrate a diversity of approaches, including biochemical and molecular techniques, immunological approaches, and light and electron microscopy to study plant cell structure in relation to calcium nutrition and sequestration. During plant growth and development certain cells become specialized to serve as calcium sinks. Within the vacuoles of these cells calcium is precipitated as crystalline calcium oxalate. We believe these specialized cells are important in regulating excess environmental calcium by removing it from active plant metabolism. Crystals and crystal-forming cells occur in specific anatomical and developmental patterns, indicating that their development is biologically controlled, analagous to the formation of bones, teeth, and shells in other organisms. We are particularly interested in understanding what regulates differentiation of plant cells to accumulate and sequester calcium, in determining mechanisms that control calcium oxalate crystallization within the cell, and in defining the importance of these specialized cells in plant development and physiology.

Extractions: Botany 2 consists of two semesters: BOT 201 ( Conservation and Biodiversity ) and BOT 202 ( Research and Concepts ). Each semester can be taken individually or in combination. Taken together, they comprise the second year of a major in Botany. The Research and Concepts semester is more lab based, the Conservation and Biodiversity semester is more applied, and is recommended for those students who wish to enter a career in ecological or environmental fields, and can be taken in conjunction with Environmental Science. The BOT 201 Conservation and Biodiversity semester is thus open to any student, and no pre-requisites are required. Botany 202: In this course the student is introduced to basic research methods and concepts botany. This is then followed by detailed study of three diverse fields of botany, namely aspects of Taxonomy (or Systematics), Anatomy and Physiology. Plant morphology can also yield clues to taxonomic and evolutionary relationships. Consequently, background in plant structure is a prerequisite for studying land plant evolution. The fern shoot in Figure 1.5 will help you assemble all of the various tissue types into a plant. Examine sectioned stems of modern plants ( Helianthus - sunflower (VG 1:5) Pelargonium (VG 1:6) Ranunculus - buttercup (VG 1:7) and Lycopodium (VG 1:9) ) to identify parenchyma, xylem, phloem, and other cell types if present. Note that they are arranged together into distinct tissues. If you have never looked at the cellular structure of a plant before, all of the cells may look alike to youÉdon't panic. In modern plant material, the cell types are differentially stained and this will help you distinguish them at first glance. However, don't rely on this crutch because the fossils don't come stained. When you have sorted out which cell type is which, start to notice features of the different cell types that would help you distinguish them in an unstained preparation. For example, phloem cells tend to be a little bit polygonal in contrast to the very round or oval xylem cells. A little time and careful observation (aided by drawing) will train your eye quickly. In slides of macerated wood (wood that has been degraded by chemical treatment) you can observe tracheids in three dimensions

Both neobotanical and paleobotanical data are brought to bear on the analysis of significant evolutionary events/processes in the history of photosynthetic life.
