From Bystander: A History of Street Photography by Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz Brian Robertson (from a posting to a street photography discussion group) On one level, if the purpose was simply to take a candid shot and be done with it, then one could simply set up a few cameras here and there with automatic timers. Then, at the end of each day, you'd roam around and collect film, develop it and hope you'd found a masterpiece. HCB never edited in the darkroom, basically, but only in his camera/mind/eye. Winogrand blasted a student who thought it wasn't necessary to look through the viewfinder. In other words, the interaction of all parts includes first the parts and the photographer as a whole, then the addition of the person who sees the photograph. What we do, standing as the swinging door between the world we've seen and the viewer, is to capture the image as we see/feel it and then use whatever technical means support that statement. It is that last part that sets street photographers apart from photojournalists.
