The inside is spray-painted matte black. A biggish hole was drilled in the center of the lid. A square of heavy aluminum foil (from a disposable cookie sheet) with a pinhole in it is taped over the drilled hole, using electrician's tape. The pinhole is the lens of the camera. The shutter is a piece of the foil paper that film comes in. There are pieces of tape on the shutter to hold it up or down, as appropriate. The film is black-and-white print paper. It is held in place (in principle) by two strips of black cardboard glued to the inside of the camera. Although the lid seemed to fit tightly, it wasn't lightproof (our first pictures were all white). These light leaks are covered by a strip of black felt held on with a strip of elastic. To change the "film", you need either a darkroom or a changing bag. When the film is developed, you get a negative, from which you can make a contact print.

Extractions: Web Authoring Pinhole Photography A pinhole camera is the simplest camera there is. It only consists of a light-tight box with a piece of film or photographic paper inside, and a small hole to let light in. Pinhole cameras have very interesting properties that make them very different from cameras with lenses, and should be used accordingly. If you expose a piece of film to light without a lens or pinhole, you don't get an image. This is because every point on the film is reached by light from different directions, so the information in these light rays is mixed in that spot. You have to find a way to map each point on the film to a point in the world, only then you get a picture. This is what a pinhole does: It only lets one single ray of light hit every spot on the film (in theory, anyway), and blocks out all the others. So the light rays paint an image, one ray per point.

Extractions: M y first involvement with Pinhole was some years ago when I suggested Karen my daughter to present for a science fair a project on that topic (she was in middle school at the time). With some guidance/help she made 2 Pinhole "Camera Obscura" using cardboard boxes, tape and stretched translucent plastic bags (as ground "glass"), these "Cameras" where aimed to a 75W incandescent bulb and an image of the bulb appeared on the stretched plastic. By the way, she won the first prize!! Using Polaroid 4x5 B&W film I made some pictures of "still lifes" that she also displayed at her "fair stand". This picture is my first pinhole picture ever, click on it to see a larger size. After the above mentioned encounter with pinhole imaging and although I kept reading about it (mainly in the rec.photo newsgroups), I did not made any pinhole picture until recently. 35mm format: I modify disposable 35mm cameras installing a pinhole in place of the lens and reload the camera with B&W film. I have 2 of this cameras, one is 14mm in "focal length" and the other one is 28mm. Here are some of the images I have made with such cameras:

Pinhole photography is lensless photography, ligth passes through the hole and an image is formed. Legend has it that pinhole was discovered by an Arab who saw, on his awakening, a marvelous vision on the wall of his tent. Then he realized that the "vision" was an image produced by a little hole in the tent. This legend may or may not be true. Certainly the Chinese and the Greeks knew the principle of the pinhole camera and used it for observation of solar eclipses. The Arabian physicist and mathematician Alhazen (about 1000 A.D.) explained why the image is upside down. Leonardo da Vinci cited the device in Codex Atlanticus, while the first detailed widely known description of the pinhole camera was given by Giambattista della Porta (about 1560) in his Magiae Naturalis. A fair account of pinhole story and other useful information can be found in Pinhole Photography by Jon Grepstad. Pinhole cameras have some remarkable features: no distortion, great depth of focus, reasonable degree of resolution, and a major shorcoming: they are very slow (about f/100 or more). A pinhole "lens" can be easily designed considering the pinhole as a particular case of a Fresnel zone plate. A Fresnel zone plate consists of a series of concentric circles whose radii are proportional to the square root of whole numbers. The zones corresponding to odd or even numbers are blackened.
