    Extractions: How to Care for Your Piano Now you are the possessor of a fine grand piano. You hope very much to keep it for many years, perhaps forever and pass it on to future generations. Some of the top makes will also keep their value over time. How does one care for such an instrument? With great respect, and a little know how and common sense. Moving or delivering a piano should definitely be left to the dealer from whom you purchased your instrument. A few points should observed. If the piano is delivered during colder outside temperatures, you may want to temporarily lower the temperature of the receiving room. Do not open the instrument for a few hours. This prevents temperature shock. If these simple precautions are ignored, the soundboard could crack and condensation built up in the piano. In general, introduce your piano to a new environment gradually avoiding extreme or rapid changes in temperature. The placement of the piano in your music room is important. Place the piano as far away as possible from any heat source and from windows where wind or sun might damage the instrument. An unheated inside wall would be ideal. Allow enough space on the left side of the piano to place a floor lamp. A small table or shelves to deposit music when removed from the music desk will be useful. Many stores sell special piano lamps. These are not suitable for grand pianos. The room should not have carpeting that is too deep as this will effect the pedal height, although any necessary adjustments can be made by using appropriate castors.
