MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY Exhibits, activities Large museum emphasizes basic science (both physical and natural Therewere no handson activities, but the equipment demos and train http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/publicaccess/museumsandi.html
Extractions: Engineering judges: Jeff Dykstra, staff engineer, Corporate Applied Research Laboratories, Motorola Inc., Schaumburg, Ill. (Accompanied by wife Laura and preschooler Carrie [F, 4].) Leonard M. Johnson, assistant group leader, Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, Mass. Ramchandra (Ram) S. Vaidya, senior software engineer, Complete Business Solutions Inc., Farmington Hills, Mich. (Accompanied by wife Sheila.) Junior jury: Chris Dykstra (M, 7); Michael Johnson (M, 7); Charu Vaidya (F, 9). Exhibits, activities: Large museum emphasizes basic science (both physical and natural), industry, and historical technology. Intended audience: General public. Prior visits? Three (Dykstra); none (Johnson and Vaidya). Highlights: (Chris Dykstra) The F-14 flight simulator, which demonstrated an F-14 mission with a realistic simulation (similar to a ride at MGM Studios). Another was the U-505 submarine exhibit, a tour of an actual German U-boat captured during World War II. ("Awesome!") (Michael Johnson) The coal mine, a large walk-through exhibit featuring a mine elevator, tunnels, underground train, and mine machinery. The fact that much of the equipment was real and operating was particularly appealing. The exhibit had the feel of a real mine. There were no hands-on activities, but the equipment demos and train ride more than made up for this. The verbal presentations were concise and informative but sounded overly scripted.

Organic chemistry labs provide the foundation for the study of organic chemistry . In the past, these labs required expensive glassware and apparatus, expensive and hazardous chemicals, and three hour lab periods. vial organic overcomes these obstacles. The reactions are performed in durable inexpensive, and reusuable vials, using a hot water bath heated with a simple immersion heater. Organic chemicals are still required but the quantities are now microscale versions. Labs include: Melting point determinations, isolation of chlorophyll from spinach, isolation of cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon sticks, hydrolysis of starch, preparation of iodoform, formation of an ester, and oxidation of benzaldehyde.
