I started with visual "deep sky" observing, but seeing the photographs taken by other amateur astronomers in Astronomy and Sky and Telescope magazines made me long for something more than a pleasant 'memory' of a celestial object. After a friend let me use his Celestron 8 as a guidescope for my 300mm telephoto lens to do a few short exposures of some bright nebulae and star clusters.....I guess you can figure out the rest of the story :-). In early 1981, I ordered a Byers 812 German Equatorial mount and a Meade model 1060 Newtonian (10" f/6) tube assembly. The smaller scope 'piggybacked' is a 6" f/5 Newtonian added later for a high power finderscope. The 10" Newtonian tube assembly has been modified with heavy duty optical support systems, a custom made Off-Axis guider with a focal plane interrupt vibrationless shutter. This is used to stop the exposure without closing the 35mm camera shutter. This particular feature really makes long exposure photography much more bearable. I'll explain this later. More features have been added to improve the final image, such as a Celestron Coma Corrector which is designed to improve the focus across the entire 35mm film frame. This problem, inherent in 'fast' Newtonians (any focal ratio below f/7) is caused by the inability of the optical system to bring all light rays to sharp focus on a flat film plane. I have also added light baffles on the back of the scope and a tube extension to the front of the scope to keep out unwanted stray light. The last thing I did was to create a series of resistor loops to provide gentle heat to the diagonal mirror, coma corrector and the guiding eyepiece. I live in a fairly humid area on the East coast of Virginia and do my photography at a dark site in NE North Carolina. (about 20 miles west of the Great Dismal Swamp) Optics will fog quickly in this climate.

Graphic Art Portfolio Archival processing involves a sequence of fixing and washing steps to insure the permanence of the image on the fiber paper stock. After developement, two-bath fixing removes all the undeveloped (excess) silver from the paper. These fixing salts can cause discoloration of the paper base and fading of the silver particles if not fully washed away. Following the fixer, the prints are rinsed in plain water, then treated with a hypo-clear solution, which helps chemically nuetralize the fixing salts and makes them easier to wash away. Selenium toning provides additional archival protection by forming silver-selenium compounds that have better stability and longevity than silver alone. Sepia toning is also an archival process, converting the normally cool paper color to the rich warm browns of photos from yesteryear. It is a very appealing look on many of the angel images presented here. The final step is a plain water wash in an archival washer to remove the traces of processing chemicals which can have a detrimental effect on print longevity.

    Extractions: The scene is little changed today, just a few more houses on the hillside. The actual photograph was taken from a slightly elevated position. A band-stand was built in the same year and on the spot where the photo was taken. It is probable that the photographer positioned himself on the ladders or roof to get the desired shot. This design and others similar were produced by a photographic method of etching the copper plates. The technique was developed by Temple for Maw and Co, designs using the same technique appear on post 1904 Booths tiles, giving rise to the possibility that Temple was designing for both Maws and Booths. The reverse is featured in Back Chat 14, Glazed Expressions 20, Spring 1990, Fig 5.

    Extractions: I was attracted to the word 'professional' in the title, and that's why I bought the book. This turned out to be a poor reason to buy the book, and I was disappointed with much of the content. I suppose technically speaking this book does cover techniques that professionals use, but it doesn't really cover them to a professional extent. You can buy whole Photoshop books dedicated to things like restoration or color correction. In this book, they have brief chapters. Maybe this book is supposed to be an introduction to professional techiniques Even then, I found some of the approaches to be questionable. On many occassions there was definately a more flexible, less destructive approach to the presented problem (ie. a more PROFESSIONAL way). Books I've read that I thought were good professional photographic technique books would include 'PS Artistry', 'PS Master Class', 'Photoshop Color Correction.' I gave it 3 stars (cause you can't pick 2.5), and because it might be useful to someone else; as well it didn't strike me as a hit n' run scam book. Maybe it would be alright for an intermediate user, but check out other books too.

These controls are the lens focal length, the subject distance, the aperture and the shutter speed. Fig. 1 a typical camera. Coupling the use of these controls with your selection of film type, point of view, moment of exposure, lighting (either through your choice of time of day or through your use of flash or flood light) and its direction and quality as well as your control of film processing and print making gives you tremendous ability to structure and create your images, rather than simply blindly recording the reality in front of your lens. To use these controls successfully involves a certain amount of mental previsualization of the final image and this is the most important skill for a photographer to develop. Try to look at the world with a critical eye whenever you can. Try to see picture possibilities and envision how you would photograph them. By doing these visual exercises your photographic vision will sharpen rapidly.

    Extractions: As crime scene technicians we are accustom to photographing the crime scenes and using forensic photography techniques to capture on film the fingerprints, footwear patterns, toolmarks, bite marks and blood spatter patterns that are found at the various crime scenes. We think of the laser or ALS as another light source, such as the photo bulb or electronic flash, however it is not the same photographic technique. When using the laser or ALS to photograph the processed prints we are now photographing the luminescence or florescence of the chemical used, not the light generated by the laser or ALS. We need to learn other photographic techniques to capture these images on film. There are certain rules that must be followed in order to capture these images. An ambrotype is a weak negative image on glass rendered positive by the addition of a dark background. Frederick Scott Archer, an English sculptor, discovered that light-sensitive silver salts could be mixed with collodion, a sticky liquid that rapidly hardens and which had seen use as a field bandage for the British military. This mixture could then be applied to a glass plate and exposed in a camera while still wet; hence the term "wet plate process." In 1854, James Cutting of Boston took out a patent on this process, and Marcus Root coined the name "ambrotype" for it, from the Greek ambrotos (immortal). The process was cheaper and easier than the daguerreotype and contributed to the demise of that earlier process. Like the daguerreotype, an ambrotype was also produced as a unique object, although in principle, a print could be made from the negative on the glass. For an illustration of how a dark background makes the negative ambrotype plate look positive, see fig. 2.

With the increasing focus within photography on technological advances in digital cameras and computers it is easy to get carried away and forget how a photographic image is created. There is no need for a lens just a light proof box with a pin hole opening that allows light to hit a sheet of film. Without technology there is unpredictability, inconsistency and contradiction. This lack of control therefore means the photographer can never be sure how the final image will look. The pinhole image has a certain mysterious dream like quality that at times can be difficult to comprehend. It tends to suggest the form of objects by viewing the world more ruthlessly than the human eye - challenging the traditional ways of seeing. Since exposures are long the pinhole stands still observing while everything around it carries on regardless, objects can become blurred, take on a different shape or can be omitted from the scene completely. The pinhole camera can be compared to allowing a tape recorder to record at the side of your bed as you sleep while played back in the morning instead of the silence you expected you hear unfamiliar sounds and voices. The pinhole camera is a method I will be using for future projects.

For that reason, American readers may encounter some spelling that seems odd for an Yankee director of photography.
