Extractions: Lecture: Near Eastern Origins of Western Civilization "If Western Civilization is about the history of Europe, then why does the course begin with the Near East?" To this well-directed question, the response is that the focus of the West has been toward the East at least if not more than as long as the reverse. The first truly European civilizations, the Greek city-states and Rome, consistently thought of the East as being "where the action" was so-to-speak. Historians and archaeologists believe that cities (and hence civilization) first appeared in the Near East about 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. In fact Jericho in the modern state of Israel is the oldest city still existing. Its origins go to about 8,000 BC. "Just what is meant by the term Near East, and how is it different from the Middle East?" The Near East and the Middle East for all practical purposes are synonymous. It has been rather ethnocentric of westerners to coin such terms: near to what? Obviously near to the West as compared to being far from the West as is the so-called "Far East" (China, Korea, Japan, etc "So, just where is the Near or Middle East?"
