Extractions: FRtR Biographies Adam Smith Quote Adam Smith was a Scottish political economist and philosopher. He has become famous by his influential book The Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith was the son of the comptroller of the customs at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. The exact date of his birth is unknown. However, he was baptized at Kirkcaldy on June 5, 1723, his father having died some six months previously. At the age of about fifteen, Smith proceeded to Glasgow university, studying moral philosophy under "the never-to-be-forgotten" Francis Hutcheson (as Smith called him). In 1740 he entered Balliol college, Oxford, but as William Robert Scott has said, "the Oxford of his time gave little if any help towards what was to be his lifework," and he relinquished his exhibition in 1746. In 1748 he began delivering public lectures in Edinburgh under the patronage of Lord Kames. Some of these dealt with rhetoric and belles-lettres, but later he took up the subject of "the progress of opulence," and it was then, in his middle or late 20s, that he first expounded the economic philosophy of "the obvious and simple system of natural liberty" which he was later to proclaim to the world in his Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations . About 1750 he met David Hume, who became one of the closest of his many friends.

His laissez-faire doctrines were typified in his Iron Law of Wages, which stated that all attempts to improve the real income of workers were futile and that wages perforce remained near the subsistence level. Ricardo was the third son of a Dutch Jew who had made a fortune on the London Stock Exchange. At the age of 14 he entered his father's business. By 21, he had become a Unitarian, and married a Quaker. He continued as a member of the stock exchange, and in a few years acquired a fortune. His interest in economic questions arose in 1799 when he happened to read Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations . His first published work was The High Price of Bullion, a Proof of the Depreciation of Bank Notes (1810), asserting that there was a close connection between the volume of bank notes and the level of prices and that the level of prices in turn affected foreign exchange rates and the inflow or outflow of gold.. A committee appointed by the House of Commons, known as the Bullion Committee, confirmed Ricardo's views and recommended the repeal of the Bank Restriction Act which had obliged the Bank to withhold payment in gold under the strain of war with France. At this time Ricardo became friends withs the philosopher and economist James Mill (father of John Stuart Mill), the Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham and Thomas Malthus, best known for his theory that population tends to increase faster than the food supply.

Priests and priestesses were responsible for tracking the motion of the Moon and stars and creating a calendar to mark the passage of time. This meant that their positions carried great power and prestige in their societies. It was also during this time period that civilizations created the astrological signs, naming the constellations after their ancient myths. It is hard to imagine a world in which modern day telescopes did not exist. However, in the times of ancient Babylon and Greece there were no such tools. Instead, these civilizations used relatively simple tools that aided them in studying the vast night sky. These fairly primitive, but very effective, tools did not hinder them from learning much about planetary motion, the stars, and the universe in general. In fact, the ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, and Greeks were able to chart, analyze, and predict planetary motion. One very popular tool was the astrolabe , which was first created in classical Greece. Astrolabes are used to show how the sky looks at a specific place at a given time. The simplest form of the astrolabe resembles two fairly flat circular disks stuck together through a tiny hole in the center of the disks. The top disk has a section cut out (resembling a rounded slice of pie), and it can be manually rotated so as either to hide or show the pictures of the sky that are drawn on the lower disk. The majority of astrolabes are (and were) made of brass and are about six to eight inches in diameter. To use an astrolabe, one adjusts the moveable components to a specific date and time. Once set, the entire sky, both visible and invisible, is represented on the face of the instrument. Today, something similar called a "planisphere" is available to the general public in paper or cardboard.
