Extractions: The Farm as it looks like today H istory has it that in 1794, Merrill Knight of Falmouth (now Portland), Maine, was the first to have made a permanent home within what was than called Plantation # 1. It is said that he came during the fall of 1793, when the leaves were off the trees, so as to better view his newly acquired 4,880 acres, which he co-owned with a Mr. Daniel Lunt Sr., also of Falmouth. I take it that he liked what he saw, for the following spring, he returned with two of his oldest sons, Harry and Goin, to what is now Peru Center. Here they selected a suitable site to make a home, and began to cut the trees needed to make a clearing and made them ready for burning the following year. In the spring of 1795, they retuned, burned the trees, planted and sowed a small garden, and built a crude log cabin. By fall, they had completed enough so that Merrill returned to Falmouth to retrieve the rest of his family. Roads, as we know them, during this period of time had not yet been built, so the mode of travel was usually by foot, or if they were lucky, on horseback, using an old Indian trail, with spotted trees to guide them. Upon arriving at a river, one would follow the riverbanks, and during the winter months, travel on the ice. From history, we find that when one traveled with his family and household goods to his new home, they usually choose to do so during the winter months, when the rivers were froze over. This was so they could use sleds to carry their belongings, and fore go the up and down of rough trails, which usually couldnt handle a wagon or sled, little on, a horse or oxen. This is most likely how our first pioneer settler and his family came to Peru. They would have left Falmouth via an Indian trail to Brunswick Falls, where they would come upon the Androscoggin River. From there theyd follow the banks up river.

Extractions: Cuzco or Cusco , city in southern Peru , capital of Cuzco Department, in the valley of the Huatanay River, about 3415 m (about 11,210 ft) above sea level. The principal industries of the city are tanning, brewing, sugar refining, chocolate production, and the manufacture of cotton goods. Cuzco is the seat of a bishopric and the National University of San Antonio Abad (1962). The city contains many remains of Inca times, including the famous Inca temple of the sun; parts of the Inca wall that once surrounded the city; and numerous doorways, arches, and building walls. Many of the present-day houses, usually of adobe with red tile roofs, have remains of Inca stonework for their foundations. Among buildings dating from the Spanish occupation are the Renaissance cathedral, built at the beginning of the 17th century, and the prefecture, formerly the palace of the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro . Although much of the city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1950, the historic sites have been restored. Population (1993) 257,751.

Extractions: P eru is best known as the heart of the Inca empire, but it was home to many diverse indigenous cultures long before the Incas arrived. Although there is evidence of human habitation in Peru as long ago as the eighth millennium BC , there is little evidence of organized village life until about 2500 BC. It was at about this time that climatic changes in the coastal regions prompted Peru's early inhabitants to move toward the more fertile interior river valleys. For the next 1500 years, Peruvian civilization developed into a number of organized cultures, including the Chavìn and the Sechìn. The Chavìn are best known for their stylized religious iconography, which included striking figurative depictions of various animals (the jaguar in particular) and which exercised considerable influence over the entire coastal region. The Sechìn are remembered more for their military hegemony than for their cultural achievement. The decline of the Chavìn and Sechìn cultures around the 5th century BC gave rise to a number of distinctive regional cultures. Some of these, including the Saliner and the Paracas, are celebrated for artistic and technological advances such as kiln-fired ceramics and sophisticated weaving techniques. From the Paracas arose the Nazca, whose legacy includes the immense and cryptic Nazca Lines. However, the accomplish- ments of these and other early Peruvian civilizations seem today to pale in comparison to the robust pre-Columbian civilization of the Inca.

Extractions: March 23rd 1812 T he earlist record that can be found of the Town of Peru, begain with the organization of the township as Plantation No. 1, (also known as Partragetown), on March 23, 1812. When the inhabitants of the township assembled at a legal meeting, as warned by order of the County Treasurer of the County of Oxford, Henry Rust, Esq. Chose John Holland, Esq., as Moderator. Hezekiah Walker was elected as Plantation Clerk, a position which he held till the March 9th 1929 town meeting, when Stephen Gammon replaced him. Amos Knight, James Lunt, and William Kyle as assessors for the present year. Collection of taxes was bid off by Adam Knight at ten cents on the dollar. The next meeting was held on April 6, 1812. This was most likely held in the home of Merrill Knight Sr., for the purpose of casting votes for the Governor for the Commonworth of Massachusetts, and Senators for the District of Maine. After voting Merril Knight Sr. as the moderator, 20 votes were cast for Elbridge Gerry for Governor, and Eleazer W. Ripley, Jonathan Page and Ebenezer Poor for Senators. Each year we find the names of new pioneers that arrived in town, and are on the record for the first time.

Extractions: Despite the great difficulties posed by Peru's varied topography, long before the Incas, more than 30 civilisations developed on the Coast and in the Highlands, each endowed with remarkable cultural, religious, economic - and bellicose - features. Traces of this heritage still survive in contemporary Peruvian handicrafts. Thanks to a powerful army and the shrewd exercise of traditional exchange practices such as barter, gifts, redistribution and reciprocity - as well as constant conflicts among the kingdoms on the Coast - the Incas ruled over numerous Andean groups, and were thereby able to build their great Empire. While the Inca's economic and social organisation permitted equitable distribution of the resources and wealth produced by the population's labour, the development of their powerful Empire was based on a predominantly military organised system. The military control exerted by the Incas over ethnic groups and kingdoms provoked strong resistance, and continual conflicts throughout the Empire's short history. The arrival of the Spaniards coincided with the struggle for control of the Empire between the two brothers Huascar and Atahualpa; with the breach of the centralised power; and the hatred of two powerful kingdoms of warriors, the Chancas and the Huancas, who became the allies of the Spaniards in their fight against the Incas.
