Extractions: The national Department of Agriculture and Food and Trees for Africa will annually award prizes for best LandCare projects involving schools in South Africa, starting this year. As a key partner of LandCare in urban areas, Food and Trees for Africa has initiated the Eduplant Permaculture Competition to encourage and empower school groups to start their own nurseries, permaculture gardens and urban greening projects. After several provincial permaculture workshops, school groups integrate their knowledge and skills with their respective curricula. The Active Learning Framework (inform, explore and question, action and reporting) has been used to develop illustrative learning programmes with an environmental focus. This encourages learners to become actively involved in addressing and responding to environmental issues. Each year, schools are given the opportunity to enter the Eduplant Permaculture Competition and 63 finalist school groups are chosen for a national workshop. The event encourages community participation, LandCare technology development, skills and training, as well as the formation of enviro-clubs.

Extractions: 1. Why do we need LandCare? Land degradation and water shortages are serious environmental issues facing South Africa today. This affects each and every personthrough the economy, through the environment, through poverty in our communities and eventually our quality of life. Most of South Africa receives an irregular rainfall and a relatively dry climate. Also, much of our cropland and grazing land has deteriorated as a result of the influences of soil erosion, overgrazing, salinity, bush encroachment, alien plants and the prevailing socio-economic issues. Land degradation is costing millions of Rand each year in lost production alone. If we include treatment of degraded land and nutrient loss, research and other costs related to pollution and the silting of our waterways, the costs add up to several billion Rand a year. This is a cost that our whole community has to bear. If nothing is done, we will almost certainly face higher food costs, loss of income and loss of biological diversity. But its not all that bad. People are realising the problems and exploring solutions. Now there is a LandCare programme with dedicated people who want to change things around.

Extractions: (H) About The Planet-Friendly (A) Introduction We all eat. But few of us have anything to do with the source of our daily fare. We trust that healthy and ample food will appear, like magic, in the grocery store. We trust the corporations, the "food system", that creates this apparent miracle. Many are trying to find and communicate answers to these questions. Next weekend is the annual "Guelph Organic Conference", probably Canada's largest event related to this topic. World-renowned food system analyst & author Brewster Kneen comes to Ontario with appearances in Guelph (Jan 27-28), Waterloo (Jan 29), Kitchener (Jan 29), Toronto (Jan 30), Edgehill (Jan 31), Lindsay (Feb 1) and Peterborough (Feb 2 & 3). Also, "Science & the Public Good", with Ralph Nader, Maude Barlow, Ann Clark and others, is being held in Ottawa on Fri. Feb. 16. This issue of the Planet-Friendly focuses on upcoming events & resources related to food. Future editions will include additional listings as they come available (you can find them quickly by searching for "food" or "agriculture"). Extractions: Date sent: 19 March 1999 (via New Crops LISTSERV) Jack bean is grown as a cover crop by small farmers in many sustainable agriculture programs. I know of several groups working with Jack bean in Nicaragua and suspect that it is also used in many other Latin American countries as well as Africa and Asia. The Nicaragua groups could not produce enough seed for their own needs when I was last there in 1996, but that situation might have changed by now. I believe that the Nicaragua programs obtained seed from Honduras to get their programs started. I have advised my contact in Nicaragua of your interest just in case they are not on the New Crops LISTSERV. If they have seed available, or know of a source, I suspect that they will contact you directly. Robert N. Mowbray

Extractions: With the support of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation, CTA MANAGEMENT OF WORKING OXEN Follow these tips to ensure that your oxen stays healthy and in a good working condition: Each oxen pair has its own handler and they work together as a team. The oxen handler is responsible for the work done by the oxen and for their welfare. The working day should begin early in tropical countries, to make use of the coolest hours. The working hours in Africa are normally between 6-11 in the morning. The handler must exercise patience and sympathy towards the oxen, not overworking them when tired. If an ox lies down the handler should never beat it or twist its tail The handler must give the necessary supplementary feed to the oxen before handing over to the herdsman. The oxen must be examined daily by the handler and any major injury or suspicion of other illness (such as lameness; running, weeping, sore or otherwise injured eyes; weakness at work, loss of appetite or refusal to eat; loss of weight or condition; coughing or any rapid, heavy or noisy breathing; severe diarrhoea or constipation; or any sign of blood in the urine) must be reported to the stockman or veterinary. Oxen cannot perform well unless they are maintained in good condition. This calls for control of external and internal parasites, immediate attention to wounds and infections, and supplementary feeding of minerals and nutrients that may be lacking in the normal diet.
