Extractions: Instructor: M.S. Schmalz Computer program design can be made much easier by organizing information into abstract data structures (ADS). For example, one can model a table that has three columns and an indeterminate number of rows, in terms of an array with two dimensions: (1) a large number of rows, and (2) three columns. A key feature of modern computer programs is the ability to manipulate ADS using procedures or methods that are predefined by the programmer or software designer. This requires that data structures be specified carefully, with forethought, and in detail. This section is organized as follows: Arrays and their Manipulation PASCAL File I/O Commands In this introductory class, we will concentrate only on the data structures called arrays , which are discussed in Section 5.1. We then progress to a discussion of how PASCAL handles information stored in DOS files (Section 5.2), and review in detail the PASCAL commands for file input/output (I/O, Section 5.3).The section on file I/O will be updated periodically to reflect updates in Turbo PASCAL syntax and usage. 5.1. Extractions: (revised 2000-05-03) 0. Introduction This paper is concerned with how to write quality Pascal code. The emphasis is on the coding aspects of writing Pascal code. Sample program: roman.p.txt , a program to convert Roman numerals into arabic numbers. Sample bad code: trim , an actual real-world piece of bad code. Note: the paper uses Pascal/iX, the Pascal on the HP 3000 computer, but nearly all points apply to any variant of Pascal, and most apply to other programming languages as well. I want the discussions in this paper to cover the four P's of programming: philosophy, performance, problems, and portability. I considered trying to divide the paper into four chapters, one for each of the P's, but realized that for many topics that I would put in one chapter, equally good arguments could be raised for putting it into another one. So, instead of having one chapter per P, I've organized the paper into the chapters: Style, Coding Choices, Performance Problems, and Portability. In each chapter, the 4 P's are used as the principles underlying a set of guidelines. These suggested rules should not be viewed as though they were the 10 (or %12 or $A) Commandments. They are my rules, the ones that I have used (in various forms for different languages) in the writing of over one million lines of code. Guidelines should grow, as do people. I can look at programs I wrote in 1970 and see changes in style in the intervening years. Despite the changes, the overall look has remained the same.

Extractions: The essential purpose of a programming language is to allow a programmer to give precise instructions to the computer. Programming languages do this with varying degrees of effectiveness. High-level programming languages have many benefits: they provide for portability; they abstract away machine details to simplify the task of programming; and some of them use type systems to provide program-correctness checking. New programming languages are being developed each year, and one would hope that they are getting better at filling the needs of programmers. This process can not proceed without a dialogue of criticism on current programming languages and what programmers would like to see in new languages. In this paper I will survey some criticisms of the Pascal, C, and C++ languages, and also I will put forward some of my own criticisms of the C-Linda programming language. Additionally, there are significant problems with control-flow and source code organization. There is "no guaranteed order of evaluation of the logical operators and and or" (Kernighan 7). This disallows tests like "while (i Additionally, there is criticism of the way C++ implements object-oriented programming. One of my main complaints with C++, which Joyner also makes in his paper, is the fact that private class members must be included in the header file that is exported to the user of the class. This seems to go against the object-oriented paradigm, where the user of the class should not know how the class is implemented, but is only told how to use the interface to that class. There is also no way to declare a method for a class which can not be overridden by a child class. Lastly, virtual function declarations in classes are unnecessary bookkeeping that could be done by the compiler.

Cuno Pfister, Oberon microsystems Component Pascal is to Pascal what Java is to C and C++: a modern and safe next-generation language that combines the flexibility of dynamic languages with the robustness of static languages. Like Java, it builds on decades of experience, and makes reuse of existing skills easy. Like Java, it supports component software much better than its predecessors. Compared to Java, it is easier to learn and allows to produce more efficient code. The most obvious difference is the "look and feel" of the two languages. Component Pascal is syntactically clearly in the Pascal family, while Java is in the C family. But this is a relatively superficial difference. Concerning the more important "design for safety", Java and Component Pascal are closely related, while C and even original Pascal (e.g., untagged variant records) are comparatively unsafe. Among other things, safety also implies automatic garbage collection. Garbage collection is necessary to avoid memory leaks and, more importantly, dangling pointers. Both Java and Component Pascal support the dynamic loading of code and metaprogramming (reflection). As a result, both languages can use virtually the same run-time system.
