(S. Vogel) "Any museum, any museum at all, makes me sad." (J. Boon) INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: PURPOSE AND CONTENT This course investigates the human propensity to objectify and re-present the natural world. We will investigate and critique presentations of Nature in such institutions as botanic gardens, zoos, marine parks, aquariums, museums, safari parks, National Parks, and Wildlife Refuges. We will attempt to answer some basic questions concerning the construction, presentation, and interpretation of Nature: Why are there museums? How are they organized, and what role do they play in society? How is Nature presented in such contexts? What options are there for new interpretations of the natural world? This course explores the origins, histories, statuses, and display techniques of institutions that exhibit Nature. Our central inquiry will focus on how ethnographic and natural history museums construct and present humans and the natural world.

William Conway role in the redeployment of zoological gardens and aquariums as environmental a dozenwildlife reserves, national monuments, and parks while contributing http://research.amnh.org/biodiversity/symposia/archives/conservation-genetics/pr
Extractions: William Conway Biography William Conway is a senior conservationist for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Until 1999, he served as the organization's president and general director. Conway has played a leading role in the redeployment of zoological gardens and aquariums as environmental science and proactive conservation centers. He led the development of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) Accreditation Program, was the father of the its Species Survival Program for the propagation of vanishing species, and is now turning to direct preservation of wildlife in nature and is chairman of its Field Conservation Committee. Under Dr. Conway's guidance, the Bronx Zoo/Wildlife Conservation Park has developed such groundbreaking educational wildlife exhibits as JungleWorld, World of Birds, Wild Asia, World of Darkness, Baboon Reserve, and Congo Gorilla Forest, as well as the redevelopment of the Central Park and other wildlife centers. During Dr. Conway's directorship, WCS became the world's leading non-governmental scientific conservation organization, currently operating nearly 300 training, park development, and conservation research and promotion projects in less developed countries. He personally oversaw field projects in South America's Southern Cone, and helped foster the development of a dozen wildlife reserves, national monuments, and parks while contributing to wildlife conservation and park development in East Africa and elsewhere.

Untitled Document the past 25 years, zoological gardens have undergone skunks, and beaver) in city parks, military reservations to the American Association of Zoos and aquariums. http://www.zoomontana.org/biology.html
Extractions: An American Zoo and Aquarium Association accredited facility Introduction In 1993, with the financial support from the Humane Society of the United States, ZooMontana created the Science and Conservation Biology Program (SCBP) in order to meet its commitments and obligation to the global conservation efforts of the world's zoological gardens. This commitment by ZooMontana is consistent with the changing roles of zoos over the past 25 years and speaks directly to the crisis of the loss of biodiversity throughout the world. During the past 25 years, zoological gardens have undergone a major change from simple animal displays for the sole purpose of public recreation, to conservation centers dedicated to the preservation of plant and animal resources. ZooMontana, America's newest accredited zoological garden, represents an unusual opportunity to create the "ideal" zoo. ZooMontana is still small, the institution is new, and dedicated resources are scarce. However, the SCBP has already become involved in regional, national and international projects, and is addressing both in situ (in wild habitats) and ex situ (captive) studies. Conservation projects are underway or have been completed in 5 states, four North American national parks and two African national parks. Collaborative projects have been completed or are ongoing with 50 other North American and nine European zoos. Projects range from reforestation of cottonwood bottom lands, contraception of large free-roaming and captive exotic species, to basic reproductive studies of free-ranging and captive zoo animals through the use of urinary and fecal hormone analysis.

Special research programs are carried out in relation to enhancing the potential for survival of the species. The park is a member of the Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AZA), an organization of zoological institutions world wide committed to coordinated management of animal species.
