More than 800 indigenous languages are spoken throughout PNG. Melanesian Pigdin and Hiri Motu are the two most widely used, but English is the official language in education, business and government circles. History First settled more than 30,000 years ago, the first recorded sighting by Europeans was in 1512 by two Portuguese explorers. Dutch explorers followed and named it New Guinea because of similarities to Africa. Interaction between regions has been largely restricted due to the topography of the land and the diversity of languages. Apart from areas where traders and missionaries exerted their influence, many tiny, independent villages account for most of the traditions and cultural heritage which is preserved today. The country was divided between three nations, the Dutch, the Germans and the British towards the end of last century. In 1905, Australia took over the British sector naming it 'The Territory of Papua' and then captured the German sector during WW1.

The combined standing plantation resource in Australia at that time is 1.5 million hectares, of which 972,170 hectares (65 per cent) are softwood species and 502,620 hectares (34 per cent) are hardwood species. An additional estimated 80 000 ha of hardwood has been planted since that time Five per cent (66,980 hectares) of the total plantation resource is reported as farm forestry by the NFFI and 95 per cent (1,417,760 hectares) is reported as industrial plantations by the NPI. The NFFI contribution to the total regional plantation estate varies from one to 13 per cent. Extractions: webmaster@paralympic.org The Papua New Guinea Disabled Sports Association (PNGDSA) is one of the newer National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) on the block. Its first-time participation in the Paralympic Games was at Sydney 2000. There, powerlifter Kupuni Lewa lifted 125kg in the men's 56-kg division and is currently ranked 77/284 in this weight class. Papua New Guinea was also represented by two visually impaired athletes: Ben Thoedore in the men's javelin and Dona Ou in the men's 1500m. The history of the PNGDSA goes back to 1981, when it was formed during the United Nations International Year for Disabled Persons. Difficulties in management meant that the Association had to be re-established twice-in 1990 and in 1992, after which the National Games for the Disabled were organized on an ad-hoc basis. Seeing the problems faced by the PNGDSA, the Papua New Guinea Sports Commission created a position for a Disabled Sports Development Officer in 1996. The role of the Officer was to work closely with the PNGDSA and organize the National Disabled Games, as well as the PNGDSA's other programs and the PNG Sports Commission's Disabled Sports Program.

Search the site On January 27, 1965, the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP) was formally incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian voluntary international organization. Dedicated to the rehabilitation, welfare and growth of the Pacific islands following the devastation of World War II, FSP honed a unique approach to development. Unlike many large international agencies and donor governments, which sent in teams of overseas experts to run programs, FSP focused on building the institutions of a society that could help itself. When FSP began its work in the Pacific Islands in 1963, almost all of the islands were colonial societies with powerful colonial officers running the civil service, education, health and other national structures. FSP became the principal secular non-governmental organization (NGO) to assist islanders during their transition to independence and sovereignty. When the New Hebrides became independent as Vanuatu in 1980, for example, its first Prime Minister and its first Foreign Minister were graduates of FSP programs. FSP was the also the only NGO to work with all of the churches in a region where ninety-five per cent of the people are Christian. In 1967 FSP published a nine volume socio-economic survey on the Pacific Islands, and in 1968 its office in Sydney, Australia was established to coordinate programs in the Pacific region. This office grew into the first FSP developed nation independent affiliate and is today known as

Extractions: ABSTRACT The northern margin of the Indo-Australian Plate records a complex geodynamic history. This history includes the formation of giant porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits during the Miocene-Recent in Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea (Grasberg, Porgera, Ok Tedi), and the formation of significant hydrocarbon reserves on the North West Shelf and in the Papuan Fold Belt. This study has been driven by the need to understand the geodynamic evolution of the margin, and in particular is focussed on understanding the regional-scale structural controls on formation of the major Cu-Au deposits. Regional-scale digital terrain models and satellite-derived global marine gravity data have been applied to mapping large-scale structures in New Guinea and offshore northern Australia. The elevation data is a composite dataset with a spacing of 30-arc seconds (approximately 900m), and the gravity data, from the Geosat and ERS-1 satellites, is retrieved from 6-8km spaced profiles. The elevation data provides a regional overview of areas previously mapped with radar imagery, and the data can be interpreted using similar techniques based on morphotectonic elements. Regional-scale fault structures can be mapped in the young New Guinea terrane, with faults recognised as either fault scarps or drainage patterns where erosion has carved a path along the fault trace. The data helps constrain extensions to, and define linkages between, currently mapped faults. Major fold structures can also be identified in the data, particularly in the Papuan Fold Belt. The global marine gravity data have a much coarser resolution, but provide an overview of the style of block-faulting that has occurred in the Timor and Arafura Seas. In particular, fault controls on the geometry of portions of the New Guinea coastline are evident.
