Reunited with '...General' director John Boorman, he plays Mickie Abraxas, a burnt-out and tanked up revolutionary who becomes a pawn in the Panamanian power games of a pathological liar (Geoffrey Rush, the tailor of the title) and a disgraced MI5 agent (Pierce Brosnan). Talking to and watching Gleeson during a day of press interviews, it's hard to imagine that the fair skin, rusty sideburns and Dub twang could ever hide out in the broody Latin Abraxas, but with a pair of contact lenses, dye for the body hair (arms, legs and head all included) and some Spanish lessons from his brother-in-law, Gleeson fits right in with the schemers and dreamers of Panama City. It's the first of four big films for him in the next twelve months, with the leading role in the new comedy 'Wild About Harry' and parts alongside Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law in Spielberg's 'AI' and Leonardo Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz in Martin Scorcese's 'The Gangs Of New York' already in the can, it seems only a matter of time before a great character actor becomes our worst kept secret. The isthmus of Panama was discovered in 1501 by Rodrigo de Bastidas, one of the captains that accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to America. In 1513 Vasco Nunez de Balboa sighted the Pacific Ocean from Darien's mountain in Panama. In 1519 Panama City was founded by Pedrarias Davila, the Governor of Golden Castile, appointed by the King of Spain. Panama was the springboard for the Spanish exploration and expansion in Central and South America along the Pacific coastline. The conquests of Peru and Chile by Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro were organized in Panama. Hernando de Soto, the discoverer of the Mississippi River, started his journey from Panama, too. The Davila brothers, Gil and Gonzalo, also organized their expeditions into Central America from the Isthmus of Panama. During the independence wars of the Spanish colonies, Panama voluntarily joined Colombia until 1903, when it gained independence and became the present Republic of Panama. On November 18, 1903 the Hay-Buneau-Varilla Treaty was signed, whereby the United States was granted the right to continue the construction of a canal through the isthmus. The interoceanic waterway, which cuts through the isthmus of Panama, is 82 Kilometers(51 miles) long. On average it take a vessel eight hours to travel from one ocean to the other, passing through three sets of locks.

Extractions: History Panama went into decline, and became a province of Colombia when the South American nation received its independence in 1821. In 1846, Colombia signed a treaty permitting the USA to construct a railway across the isthmus and to defend it with military force. The idea of a canal across the isthmus had been mooted even in the 16th century, but a French attempt to build one in 1880 resulted in the death of 22,000 workers from malaria and yellow fever and bankruptcy for everyone involved. A Frenchman who stood to gain handsomely from a US buyout of the French rights to build a canal was named 'envoy extraordinary' by Washington and he negotiated and signed a canal treaty with the USA, despite the objections of the Colombian government. The financial and strategic interests of the US momentarily coincided with the sentiments of Panama's revolutionaries, and a revolutionary junta declared Panama independent on 3 November 1903, with the overt support of the USA. The canal treaty granted the USA rights in perpetuity over land on both sides of the canal and a broad right of intervention in Panamanian affairs. The treaty led to friction between the two countries for decades, partly because it was clearly favorable to the USA at the expense of Panama and partly because Colombia refused to acknowledge Panama's independence until 1921 when the USA finally paid Colombia US$25 million in compensation. The USA began to build the canal again in 1904 and 10 years later the first ship negotiated the engineering marvel. The US intervened in Panama's affairs repeatedly up until 1936, when it relinquished its right to use troops outside the Canal Zone. The two countries continued to argue over the canal contract until a new treaty was signed in 1977. Panama formally regained control of the canal in 1999 at a ceremony attended by Mexico's president, Spain's king and former President Jimmy Carter, but not by any senior American officials.

Although they have become more accustomed to North American business norms, their values continue to emphasize the importance of personal relationships, and they still take time and effort to establish a personal relationship before a business relationship. WOMEN Although women generally occupy a secondary status in heavily male-dominated and macho-influenced Panama, they are accorded considerable personal freedom and many operate businesses. Foreign businesswomen should experience few problems. Although women may generally go out on the streets and dine alone, most will feel more comfortable if escorted.

Central America Panama San Blas Archipelago Culture and Customs Each Kuna community elects a chief, called the . Twice a year, these chiefs travel to the Kuna General Congress, the main governing body. The Kuna have their own language, but most speak at least some Spanish. Men typically wear western clothes, while women wear golden nose- and earrings and beautiful traditional clothing. Their blouses feature the famous mola, chicha fuerte feast. Chicha fuerte is an alcoholic drink made from maize and lots of sugar. When a Kuna girl hits puberty, her hair is cut short and she receives her name. The family invites the town over for a several-day party, with a tremendous batch of chicha fuerte, sugar cane, coffee, and cacao. The biggest parties of the year are in February, particularly the 25th, the anniversary of the 1925 Kuna revolution. Travelers, particularly if visiting the more isolated islands, should learn about the Kuna before coming.
