Extractions: The regional institutes at the School of International and Public Affairs differ markedly from each other, despite similar formal structures, and not just, as it often appears, because of their size and prosperity, but more importantly because of their roles and function in the university. There had been a long tradition in the teaching of Sanskrit at the University, and because of this, a very fine library collection, then one of the best in the country, had been built up that was very strong in the classical languages and in modern history. Sanskrit was located in what became known as the Department of Middle East Languages and Cultures, but by the 1950's it was quite overshadowed by the Middle East languages. A course in Indian history was taught at that time by Dr. Taraknath Das, but it was very much on the periphery of the School of General Studies. Then in the mid-1950s new interest in South Asian studies developed from two sources which, as far as I can tell, were in the beginning not at all coordinated, and these two separate points of origin have given South Asian studies at Columbia their characteristic form, which is quite different from other regional studies at the University or South Asian Studies elsewhere.

Extractions: Along the Indus river and in the Salt Range mountains, temples dating from the sixth to the early eleventh century survive in upper Pakistan. A joint project with Professors Abdur Rehman, past Chairman of the Department of Archaeology, University of Peshawar, and Farid Khan, founder of the Pakistan Heritage Society , has begun to analyse and document these important monuments in the history of South Asian temple architecture. A preliminary review and analysis of this tradition, Temples Along the Indus has been published in the University of Pennsylvania Museum's journal, Expedition , 38.3 (1996): 41-54. We discovered an important new temple designated temple E through excavations undertaken at north Kafirkot in 1997. Managed by a committee, the BAPS invites specialists to present their views in the form of open lectures followed by the comments by discussants before opening the session to general discussion. The committee is headed by Sir Oliver Forster, former British Ambassador to Pakistan, and Dr David Taylor of SOAS, holds the office of vice-president. Professor Saeed Durrani of the University of Birmingham and myself respectively hold the offices of secretary and treasurer.
