Excerpt: Rogue River (Oregon) -The upper Rogue rushes toward Rogue River Gorge near Union Creek, Oregon. The Rogue River begins at Boundary Springs on the border between Klamath and Douglas counties near the northern edge of Crater Lake National Park. Although it changes direction many times, it flows generally west for 215 miles (346 km) from the Cascade Range through the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest and the Klamath Mountains to the Pacific Ocean at Gold Beach. Excerpt: The Goose Lake Valley is located in south-central Oregon and northeastern California, United States. It is a high valley at the northwestern corner of North Americas basin and range province. Much of the valley floor is covered by Goose Lake, a large endorheic lake that straddles the Oregon-California border. The Goose Lake Valley was used by Native Americans for thousands of years before white explorers arrived in the 19th century. The pioneer wagon route known as the Applegate Trail crossed the Goose Lake Valley on its way to southern Oregon. At the south end of Goose Lake, the Lassen Cutoff separated from the Applegate Trail and headed south toward the Sacramento Valley. Today, Lakeview, Oregon is the largest town in the valley. Livestock ranching and lumber mills are the valleys main commercial activity. The Goose Lake Valley offers a number of recreational opportunities including hang-gliding, hunting, fishing, and bird watching. The Goose Lake Valley is located in Lake County in south-central Oregon and Modoc County in northeastern California. It is approximately 47 miles...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25924611 ... Excerpt: Eastern Oregon is the eastern part of the U.S. state of Oregon. It is not an officially recognized geographic entity, thus the boundaries of the region vary according to context. It is sometimes understood to include only the eight easternmost counties in the state; in other contexts, it includes the entire area east of the Cascade Range. Cities in the broadest definition include Baker City, Bend, Burns, Klamath Falls, La Grande, Ontario, Pendleton, and The Dalles. Major industries include timber, agriculture, and tourism, with the main transportation corridors consisting of I-84, U.S. Route 395, U.S. Route 97, U.S. Route 26, U.S. Route 30, and U.S. Route 20. Compared to the climate of Western Oregon, the climate of Eastern Oregon is a drier continental climate, with much greater seasonal variations in temperature. Unlike the Willamette Valley, Eastern Oregon receives a significant amount of snow in the winter. Some parts of Eastern Oregon receive fewer than 10 inches (250 mm) of rain yearly, classifying them as deserts. This desert climate is in part due to a rain shadow effect caused by the Cascade Range. Pine and juniper forests cover 35% of Eastern Oregon, much in the mountains that include the Blue Mountains, Strawberry Mountains, Wallowa Mountains, Trout Creek Mountains, Ochoco Mountains, and Steens Mountain. Basalt flows from the Columbia River Basalt Group covered large sections of Eastern Oregon 6 to 17 million years ago. It drains approximately 698 square miles (1,810 km ). Rising in northern California , it soon crosses the border and flows northeast then northwest to meet the Rogue about 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Grants Pass . It drains forested foothills of the Siskiyou Mountains along the Oregon California border. Course The Applegate River's headwaters are located in the Siskiyou Mountains in California, part of the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest . The water collects from snowmelt and springs . The Siskiyou area receives between 17 inches (430 mm) and 40 inches (1,000 mm) of precipitation annually. The river then flows north through a steep canyon past the Oregon-California border, receiving water from Elliot Creek. Elliot Creek begins near Dutchman Peak in Oregon, before flowing southwest into California, roughly paralleling the border. It joins the Applegate just before it enters Oregon. This area saw major floods in 1964 and 1974, before the Applegate Dam was constructed. The river is impounded by Applegate Dam several miles into Oregon, forming the 988-acre (4.00 km ) Applegate Lake . The United States Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the dam in 1974, and it was completed in 1980. The lake nearly extends to California. The purpose of the lake is to provide irrigation and flood control for the Applegate Valley . The community of Copper was inundated by the rising waters of t... ... Read more

Excerpt:The wreck of the Peter Iredale as of May 2005 Clatsop Spit, 1905 Clatsop Spit is a giant sand spit on the Pacific coast along U.S. 101 between Astoria and the north end of Tillamook Head in Clatsop County , northwest Oregon at the mouth of the Columbia River . The Clatsop Spit was formed by Columbia River sediment brought to the coast by the river flow after the last ice age ended approximately 8500 years ago and the ocean level rose. Here it worked over and shaped by the wind and the waves until a vast and sandy plain was formed. Shipwrecks The seas around Clatsop Spit were known to be treacherous and there were many shipwrecks , including the paddle steamer General Warren in which 42 people died in the surf in 1852 and in 1859, the schooner Rambler washed up on Clatsop Spit. No trace of her crew was ever found. In 1860, the barque Leonese washed up on Clatsop Spit upside down and her crew lost. In 1883 the crew of the luxury schooner J.C. Cousins operated by the State of Oregon similarly vanished as she washed ashore. Other shipwrecks include the barquentine Makah (1888), and the bark Peter Iredale in 1906. It is estimated that since 1800 more than 2,000 vessels and close to 1,000 lives have been lost. Geology After the sea level along the coast rose to its current level approximately 8,500 years ago at the end of the last ice age , seasonal prevailing winds drove the Columbia River's sandy sediment to the Washington beaches in the winter and to Oreg... ... Excerpt: Newberry Volcano -A great deal of volcanic activity has occurred on Newberry's shield, which itself has one of the largest collections of cinder cones, domes, lava flows, and fissures in the worldso much so that local residents call these parasitic vents the "Paulina Mountains", thinking of them as a separate mountain range. Most of the cinder cones are 200 to 400 feet (60 to 120 m) high and have shallow saucer-shaped summit craters. They are typically surrounded by basalt or andesite that erupted from their bases forming large lava beds. The northern flank holds three distinct lava tube systems that formed in phoehoe: the Horse Lava Tube System, Arnold Lava Tube System, and the Lava Top Butte basalt. On the northwest flank of the volcano is Lava Butte, located next to Highway 97 south of Bend, is a good example of this kind of cinder cone and an a lava bed. There are also about 20 rhyolite domes or fissures on the eastern, southern, and western flanks. Larger examples include 580,000-year-old McKay Butte on the west flank, 80,000-year-old China Hat and 850,000-year-old East Butte on the far eastern b...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=395823 ...
