Excerpt: The African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is a forest dwelling elephant of the Congo Basin. Formerly considered a subspecies of the African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta africana), DNA testing has established it as a separate species. However, not all authorities, notably the IUCN African Elephant Specialist Group, consider the presently available evidence sufficient for splitting the African Elephant into two species. The disputed Pygmy Elephants of the Congo basin, often assumed to be a separate species (Loxodonta pumilio) by cryptozoologists, are probably Forest Elephants whose diminutive size and/or early maturity is due to environmental conditions. African Forest Elephant in Frankfurt Zoo.Differences include the African Forest Elephant's long, narrow mandible (the African Bush Elephant's is short and wide), its rounded ears (an African Bush Elephant's ears are more pointed), straighter and downward tusks, considerably smaller size, and number of toenails. The male African Forest Elephant rarely exceed 2.5 meters (8 ft) in height, while the African Bush Elephant is usually over 3 meters (just under 10 feet) and sometimes almost 4 meters (13 ft) tall. With regard to the number of toenails: the African Bush Elephant normally has 4 toenails on the frontfoot and 3 on the hindfoot, the African Forest Elephant normally has 5 toenails on the frontfoot and 4 on the hindfoot (like the Asian elephant), but hybrids between the two species occur. The African Forest Elephant is an herbivore and commonly eats leaves, fruit, bark, and occasionally visits mineral licks. Due to poaching and the hi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=326177 ... Excerpt: Mertens Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi), often misspelled Mertens Water Monitor, is a member of the monitor lizard family found in northern Australia, and is a wide-ranging, active foraging, opportunistic predator of aquatic and riparian habitats. It is named after German herpetologist Robert Mertens. The monitor grows to a length of about one metre. It is dark brown to black above, with many cream to yellow spots. Mertens' Water Monitor at the Grotto waterhole near Wyndham, Western Australia. The monitor is found in coastal and inland waters across much of northern Australia, from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, across the Top End of the Northern Territory and the Gulf Country, to the western side of the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland. The monitor is semi-aquatic, a strong swimmer and seldom far from water. It is often seen basking on mid-stream rocks and logs, and on branches overhanging swamps, lagoons and waterways throughout its range. When disturbed it drops into the water where it can stay submerged for long periods. The monitor feeds both on land and in the water, mainly on fish, frogs and carrion, also taking terrestrial vertebrates and insects when available. It has a good sense of smell and may dig up prey ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25748250 ... Read more

Chapters: Pogo, Rocket Knight Adventures, Rocket Knight, Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2, Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt, Sparkster. Excerpt:Awesome Possum Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt is a video game created by Tengen for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis that was released in the early 1990s. The game borrows heavily from Sonic the Hedgehog , featuring an anthropomorphic possum character who battles a mad scientist and his army of robots to save the world, and has the ability to spin to attack enemies. Unlike Sonic, Awesome Possum includes environmental activist elements, with the character collecting empty bottles and cans instead of rings, and answering questions about the environment to earn bonus points in his fight against the evil Dr. Machino. The game is also repetitive, using the same basic environment for each level. It was notable for its time for having many lines of digitized speech, a feature with which the game was marketed. Set in the Okefenokee Swamp of the southeastern United States , the strip often engages in social and political satire through the adventures of its anthropomorphic funny animal characters. Pogo combined both sophisticated wit and slapstick physical comedy in a heady mix of allegory , Irish poetry, literary whimsy, puns and wordplay, lushly detailed artwork, irresistible characters and broad burlesque humor. The same series of strips can be enjoyed on different levels both by young children and by savvy adults. The strip earned Kelly a Reuben Award in 1951. This is the first major theoretical study of Mesoamerican mythology by one of the foremost scholars of Aztec ideology. Using the myth cycle of the opossum and the theft of fire from the gods as a touchstone, Lopez Austin constructs a definition of myth that pertains to all of Mesoamerican culture, challenging the notion that to be relevant such studies must occur within a specific culture. ... Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Opossums (Didelphimorphia, pronounced ) are the largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere. They are also commonly called possums, though that term is also applied to Australian fauna of the suborder Phalangeriformes. The Virginia Opossum was the first animal to be named an opossum. The word opossum comes from Algonquian wapathemwa meaning "white dog". Opossums probably diverged from the basic South American marsupials in the late Cretaceous or early Paleocene. Their unspecialized biology, flexible diet and reproductive strategy make them successful colonizers and survivors in diverse locations and conditions. Originally native to the eastern United States, the Virginia Opossum was intentionally introduced into the West during the Great Depression, probably as a source of food. Its range has been expanding steadily northwards. Its range has extended into Ontario, Canada, and it has been found farther north than Toronto. Didelphimorphs are small to medium-sized marsupials, with the largest about the size of a large house cat, and the smallest the size of a mouse. They tend to be semi-arboreal omnivores, although there are many exceptions. Most members of this taxon have long snouts, a narrow braincase, and a prominent sagittal crest. The dental formula is: By mammalian standards, this is a very full jaw. Opossums have more teeth than any other land mammal; only aquatic mammals have more. The incisors are very small, the canines large, and the molar...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more
