Product Description
The ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BC and ran for over 1000 years, waning during the Roman Empire and the advent of Christianity. The ancient games were imbued with a sacred significance. This book brings together some of the objects associated with these ancient games, including sculptures, grave markers, ceramic vases and sporting equipment. These objects originate from a broad geographical area, falling at one time or another into the Greek sphere. Despite their diversity of styles the objects remain connected by a group of uniting factors. They all relate to the theme of sport, most have a religious rather than secular significance and they all stand as rare examples of their kind. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Olympic Games (Ancient Greek: - ta Olympia; Modern Greek: - Olympiakoi Agones) were a series of athletic competitions held for representatives of various city-states of Ancient Greece held in honor of Zeus. The exact origins of the Games are shrouded in myth and legend but records indicate that they began in 776 BC in Olympia in Greece. They were celebrated until 393 AD when they were suppressed by Theodosius I as part of the campaign to impose Christianity as a state religion. The Games were usually held every four years, or olympiad, as the unit of time came to be known. During a celebration of the Games, an Olympic Truce was enacted so that athletes could travel from their countries to the Games in safety. The prizes for the victors were olive wreaths or crowns. The Games became a political tool used by city-states to assert dominance over their rivals. Politicians would announce political alliances at the Games, and in times of war, priests would offer sacrifices to the gods for victory. The Games were also used to help spread Hellenistic culture throughout the Mediterranean. The Olympics also featured religious celebrations and artistic competitions. A great statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world was erected in Olympia to preside over the Games. Sculptors and poets would congregate each olympiad to display their works of art to would-be patrons. The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games. Product Description
As religious rituals, rites of passage, and celebrations of the body, athletics were deeply woven into the fabric of ancient Greek life. Modeled after physical exercises and competitions that existed in earlier Near Eastern cultures, hundreds of athletic contests were held throughout the ancient Greek world. In the eighth century B.C., the games held at Olympia began to surpass all others in their fame and glory and gave rise to a sporting tradition that engages and enthralls the world to this day. Published to coincide with the return of the Olympics to Greece in 2004, this thoroughly researched book studies sport in ancient Greece over a span of a millennium and a half-from the earliest mentions of athletics in Homer's Iliad and other literary sources, through the Classical age, and into the Hellenistic, Roman, and late antique periods. With more than five hundred illustrations, the book tours the monumental stadiums, bathhouses, temples, and other structures built to host the athletic events and to house the wealth of art created to pay tribute to the athletes, gods, and heroes of the games. ... Product Description
This collection of sixteen thematically linked articles was inspired by the Sydney Olympic Games of 2000. Its international cast includes leading authorities in the study of ancient Greek sport. It considers how sport and festival affected the ancient Greek city and how the values of athletics pervaded Greek culture. To accompany the main focus, on the ancient world, the book examines allied topics of modern culture, such as the sometimes troubled relationship between research on ancient Greek sport and the modern Olympic movement, and the question of how museums may best present to a modern public the surviving Greek artifacts linked with sport. ...
