2-0 out of 5 stars Biased and Poorly Researched
Biased and poorly researched. How could the author claim to have researched for this book so thoroughly and left so much out. It seems he may have researched "socialism" but not how it impacted early-day Oklahoma. There is not one mention of the "Jones Family" trials and so very little on the "Green Corn Rebellion", especially how so many of the participants of were blacks and Indian. Many of the complaints by the minorities (tenant farmers, etc) were well-founded but the intended uprising was ill-timed. Oklahoma only became a state in 1907 and in effect, was still trying to "find itself." My grandparents on both sides settled here during this time. The "Jones Family" incidents happened only miles from where they lived (Pottawatomie and Cleveland counties, not even mentioned in Burbank's book) and they knew of some of the participants. Some government "spies" attended some secret meetings where insurrection, or at least draft resistance, was discussed by representatives from the WCU but locals said that as soon as guns were mentioned that the group disbanded. Still, 14 men from the Tecumseh area were arrested, a federal trial was held in Enid and eight of them were convicted and sentenced to Leavenworth. I talked to a descendent of one of those men years later and he said his great-uncle never knew what happened, that some "union men" came down and told them he could make their life better if they joined the union but he never did. The arrests and trial all took place in the passionate patriotism of wartime America. Despite weak testimony the men felt they were already "hung" because the Green Corn Rebellion had just ended with dozens being rounded up and thrown into jail. The state was alarmed and anyone giving even a hint of conspiracy was suspect. One of my grandfathers worked with the brother-in-law of one of the men acquitted in the "Jones Family Trial" and he said that the so-called conspirators (one of them was arrested because he was fishing in the area of the meeting) were embarrassed by their gullibility because they were told there was a nationwide socialist revolution, at some point men would be marching to Washington DC from all over the country and life was going to be better for the "little guy". Only later did they learn the only "rebellion" was in Oklahoma and they felt they'd been used. Don't bother with this book unless you have several others to fill in the gaps. ... Read more
