Product Description

Ocean Biogeochemical Dynamics provides a broad theoretical framework upon which graduate students and upper-level undergraduates can formulate an understanding of the processes that control the mean concentration and distribution of biologically utilized elements and compounds in the ocean. Though it is written as a textbook, it will also be of interest to more advanced scientists as a wide-ranging synthesis of our present understanding of ocean biogeochemical processes.

The first two chapters of the book provide an introductory overview of biogeochemical and physical oceanography. The next four chapters concentrate on processes at the air-sea interface, the production of organic matter in the upper ocean, the remineralization of organic matter in the water column, and the processing of organic matter in the sediments. The focus of these chapters is on analyzing the cycles of organic carbon, oxygen, and nutrients.

The next three chapters round out the authors' coverage of ocean biogeochemical cycles with discussions of silica, dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity, and CaCO3. The final chapter discusses applications of ocean biogeochemistry to our understanding of the role of the ocean carbon cycle in interannual to decadal variability, paleoclimatology, and the anthropogenic carbon budget. The problem sets included at the end of each chapter encourage students to ask critical questions in this exciting new field. While much of the approach is mathematical, the math is at a level that should be accessible to students with a year or two of college level mathematics and/or physics.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rapture of the Deep
I really appreciated Van Dover's perspective. She gave an intriguing glimpse into an area of our world which is too seldom viewed, and even less reported upon.Though the writing at times was not at the top tier, she has a wealth of knowledge that translates well onto the page.I particularly enjoyed her perspective as a woman, describing what it's like to break into a predominantly masculine field. On the other side, at times greater humility would assist in the quality of the work.Overall Van Dover's passion and enjoyment of her work are thoroughly communicated, and for brief moments I am transported below the surface with her, into a fascinating unknown and alien world.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fails on all fronts
The explication of the science is a failure. The ecology is poorly treated and the implications for evolution are under-addressed.

As a piece of science-journalism it fails to ignite. The author spends too much time dwelling on her own success at becoming the first female pilot of deep-sea vessel, Alvin. She forgets the "gee-whiz factor" which is necessary for a book of this type.

This is the only book I've given away in over 35 years. No strings attached.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful adventure for oceanography fans
In Deep Ocean Journeys, Cindy Lee Van Dover shares her love of the ocean and her fascination with the deep diving exploration that is revealing a truly remarkable dimension of this planet.Van Dover has invested a majorpart of her life in deep diving ventures and the rigorous laboratoryresearch that increases our intrique with the mysteries of life interritory seemingly alien beyond hope for life forms. This charmingbook lets us go into the abyss with Cindy Lee, peer out into the darknessilluminated by the research submersible Alvin's lights, and gaze at hotvents pouring out water that would be steam were it not for the intensepressure of the great deep...we see colonies of giant tube worms livingwithout the benefit of photosynthesis and have to open our minds to newpossibilities for living organisms. This little book is beautifullyillustrated and written with an open and friendly voice. It is a winner tothose of us who want to let our imaginations open doors.I love DeepOcean Journeys and have used it with students.Readers might do well toconsider it as a present for young, would be scientists. The oceans offermajor opportunities for discovery that should attract those who want to bea part of cutting edge research! Thank you Cindy Lee Van Dover ... Read more

Product Description
"I would strongly recommend it for library purchase and the reading list of advanced students in this field."
Microbiology Today, May 2009

Nearly a decade since its landmark publication, this book has been thoroughly revised in this valuable new edition

Like the successful first edition, Microbial Ecology of the Oceans, Second Edition is unique and fills a void in the rapidly growing fields of marine microbiology, microbial ecology, and microbial oceanography. Here, a carefully selected team of international experts explores issues of enduring importance to microbial ecologists, including:

  • Genomes and metagenomes of marine microbes
  • Microbial evolution, as revealed by molecular techniques
  • Microbes in carbon budgets and cycles
  • Viruses and grazers of bacteria
  • Microbes and N cycle reactions in sediments
  • The role of microbes in food web dynamics
  • Biogeochemical cycles in the ocean

In addition to drawing on the long history of microbiology, the contributors also include discussions of the latest advances in biological and chemical oceanography to examine the role of microbes and viruses in the oceans.

Richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings, and complemented with a comprehensive list of additional reading for each chapter, this important new edition provides readers with current information in the fields of marine microbiology and microbial ecology. It is designed for students and researchers in biological and chemical oceanography, geochemistry, marine chemistry, freshwater ecology, and general microbiology. It is also appropriate for professionals and advanced students in related fields. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbial ROCKS!!
It is very detailed but not hard to read. If you want to know how microbial rocks the world, do not miss this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book presents most "hot" topics in today's marine microbiology. Background, current research and future directions for each area are described by top scientists.
Easy to read and understand; clear graphs and figures; lots of references.
I am a Ph.D. student in marine science and find that book very useful. It's a summary and review of what every student should know about marine microbiology. It's a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, well-integrated book
"An excellent, well-integrated book that ranges from marine viruses to filamentous cyanophyceans and treats the processes mediated by them. The aerobic heterotrophic bateria in the open ocean and the biogeochemcial role of the assemblages are emphasized in most of the 16 chapters. The authors, none of them a 'pure' microbiologist but all attuned to biogeochemical questions, provide modern reviews of the basics, but ample space is given to open issues. About two-thirds of the very many references date from 1990 to 1999." --Karl Banse, University of Washington

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Review
"Microbial Ecology of the Oceans" presents timely and up-to-date reviews of various aspects of microbial ecology of the marine water column....Well-written and authoritative chapters should make it useful asa text for advanced courses and for graduate students. Altogether, I canwarmly recommend it to anyone interested in microbial ecology andbiological oceanography."

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Well written book with nice pictures of one of the most demanding sail races in the world. For those who want to see even more action I would recommend to buy the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Great Race
I was particularly interested in seeing this book because I was sailing my International Canoe by the Thomas Point light at the time of the race's start for New York (from Annapolis). It's a good book with good photos but it somehow lacked something.I have a picture of a fellow club member in his IC getting the "thumbs up" by the Pirates crew and it was as good as any of the shots on the book. The narrative was well written but could have done with more detail.Overall, a good book and worthwhile purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars still not delivered
My order was placed in december but is still undelivered. I'm waiting

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to imagine
I read this book and look at the dramatic photographs and can't believe how these guys are able to function in those conditions 24-7. They obviously don't get copies of this book as they go ahead and do it all over again a few years later

2-0 out of 5 stars Look at this book before you buy it.
Photography is good, but overall only an average book at best. A lot of fluff with very little technical talk or useful information. Headlines are hard to read as they change font colors depending on background running into the pictures. Each leg is described separately, but the overall structure and sequence is confusing and not in order. Look at this book before you buy it. ... Read more
