Extractions: by C. J. Maynard see bird information The Ornithology Library in the Lyman K. Stuart Observatory at Sapsucker Woods is part of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology . It is also an affiliate of Cornell University Library and maintains a close working relationship particularly with the Albert R. Mann Library. Since the Lab is located several miles from the Cornell campus, the collection serves as a convenient source of reference for its staff. It supplies considerable material for the Lab's public education and research programs and is consulted regularly to answer the many questions the laboratory receives from all over the world on the subject of birds. Ornithology Library books do not circulate, but visitors are welcome to use them in the building. Most of the books duplicate titles held at Mann Library or, in some cases, in other Cornell campus libraries. Catalog records for the Ornithology Library's holdings are included in the national library databases and the Cornell University Library Online Catalog The book collection in the Ornithology Library numbers about 3,000 volumes. It is particularly strong on field guides and on publications that cover bird families, or species, worldwide. Although the Ornithology Library has copies of some historical titles, it does not attempt to keep a rare book collection.

Extractions: THE WATERBIRD SOCIETY ANNOUNCEMENTS At the meeting in Grado, there was discussion of a special issue of Waterbirds to include papers presented in the Cormorant session and related posters. Such an extra issue requires external funding and we had high hopes of securing this funding. Unfortunately, we now report that these funds are not available and there will be no special issue. Please submit your manuscripts for publication in Waterbirds anyway, through the normal process, and also convery the disappointing news to others who may have been waiting to hear about the cormorant issue. Submitted by: Chip Weseloh The African Seabird Group, based in Cape Town, South Africa, and the Pacific Seabird Group, based in California, USA, have formally agreed jointly to manage and publish Marine Ornithology: an International Journal of Seabird Science and Conservation beginning with its 2001 volume. John Cooper and the African Seabird Group founded Marine Ornithology (initially named Cormorant ) in 1976, which has a distinguished international board of editors. Extractions: Jobs in Ornithology This page provides information on job opportunities in ornithology (and related topics) and how to find out about them. The first part lists local jobs that we have heard about (including any associated with the Rubega lab in EEB). The second part gives ways to find out about jobs farther afield (these range from the Arctic to the Antarctic, with many in between). In the spring of 2003, we will be initiating a study that will investigate the effects of increased residential and industrial lighting on beach-nesting birds. The study will focus on Piping Plovers and Least Terns, both of which are endangered species. We will be hiring at least one field assistant to work on this study, and there will also be opportunities for volunteers to gain research experience or for students to develop undergraduate research projects as part of the broader study (e.g., as a senior thesis). The job will begin in March and continue until July or August. The work will involve long hours, a lot of nocturnal work, and work on weekends as necessary. Prior experience conducting bird behavioral observations is a plus, but is not essential. If you are interested in working on this project, please contact Chris Elphick If you would like to learn more about the project, we expect to have a web page posted some time later this fall.
