Australian Systematic Botany Society to present many examples illustrating the practical importance of the study of botany.Part IV. Lindleys lifelong love affair with orchids - Phillip Cribb. http://www.anbg.gov.au/asbs/newsletter/book-review-98b.html
Extractions: Hardcover 25 pounds (UK), $US48.65 from amazon.com. This book is a joint work under the editorship of Professor Stearn and to which he contributes the general biography of Lindley. Also included are two lectures by Lindley himself as well as self-contained contributions from Phillip Cribb, Christopher Brickell, William Chaloner, Brent Elliott, Kathryn Bridge, William Tjaden and J. Marguerite Allford touching on specific aspects of Lindleys interests. Notes on the ten parts comprising this volume are given below. William Stearn served for twenty years as Librarian of the Lindley Library, Royal Horticultural Society (interrupted, however, by six years serving in the Royal Air Force during of the second world war) and so is ideally placed to compile and edit this volume commemorating Lindleys works on the bicentenary of his birth. As outlined by Stearn in his preface, perhaps the major advantage that this work has over previous biographies of Lindley was access to a recently uncovered "treasure trove" of Lindley family documentation from the Archives of British Columbia in Victoria, Canada. One of the fascinations with botanical biographies such as this are the personal details and interactions gleaned about historical figures whose scientific achievements we consider regularly in our own work.

Extractions: DARWIN studied first medicine at the University of Edinburgh and subsequently theology at the University of Cambridge, but his grandfathers work "Zoonomia or the laws of organic life " (1794/96) containing some initial ideas about the evolution of organisms and his friendship with the botanist J. S. HENSLOW from Cambridge influenced him a far more. From 1831 to 1836, DARWIN participated as a natural scientist in a journey around the world on board of the research ship Beagle . The journey became a crucial experience for DARWIN and was the starting point of all of his later works. During this time, he made the first observations for his theory of selection. The study of marine fossils in the higher Andes and the characteristic flora and fauna of the Galapagos Archipelago impressed him particularly. He summarized the results of this journey in a preliminary report followed in 1860 by the detailed version The Voyage of the Beagle The German translation was published in 1875. Some years after his return to England, DARWIN moved to his country seat

Extractions: The long term-goal of our group aims to explore novel morphogenesis in culture system of a variety of higher plants, and try to understand the control process of these morphogenesis. We continue to study the morphogenesis in ginseng ( Panax ginseng ) tissue culture. Plantlets derived from embryoids flowered precociously and set miniature fruits. Culture of these in vitro formed miniature fruits on a defined medium produced mass of fruit-like structure without callus proliferation. These fruit-like structure turned red as culture aged. Miniature flowers protruded from these proliferated fruit mass. Causal factors on these fruit proliferation and in vitro flowering are being studied. Prolonged culturing of embryoids derived protoplasts proliferated to form callus and produced embryoids. In vitro precocious flowering and fruiting of these protoplast-derived plantlets were also achieved in defined condition. These morphogenesis systems are being used to explore the control process on reducing juvenility, precocious flowering, and fruiting in vitro.

Extractions: During week-ends, and especially during the school holiday season, Purwodadi's Botanical Gardens in East Java serve as a popular local hangout. Its beautiful scenery, and huge variety of plants makes it deserving of this popularity. Whilst its primary function is botanical, the garden is popularly regarded as a recreational space. Families and couples go there for outings. Ever since the garden was opened to the public on March 10,1963, it has attracted increasing numbers of visitors. The gardens contain a library, which includes books, newspapers, special botanical journals and reports pertaining to the many aspects of the garden. But most people don't come to research plants, even though the gardens were established for scientific reasons. The Purwodadi Gardens are affiliated to the Kebun Raya Indonesia (Indonesia Botanical Garden,) in Bogor, just outside of Jakarta. The Purwodadi Gardens are situated about 300 metres above the sea level, at the foot of Mt. Baung. They are easy to get to, as they are situated on a main road that connects three of East Java's most major cities: Malang, Surabaya and Pasuruan.
