Those choosing the Library Information option are working under the traditional degree format, preparing for a position as a school library media specialist (PK-12). The new option, Applied Technology, prepares those individuals who wish to teach technology in the public schools. Though the state of Oklahoma does not currently have a standard certificate in computer technology, UCO's program has been aligned with programs from other states and meets all requirements we "think" the State will require when a certificate is put in place. The Library Information option embodies the requirements for a master of education and the courses specified by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation and the Oklahoma State Department of Education to receive PK-12 school library media specialist standard, advanced certification. While many of the courses are the same as those taken by future public, academic, and special librarians, the focus of this program option is the

Oklahoma Department Of Libraries/Public Librarian Certification standards are established for librarianship in larger public libraries and schoollibrary media centers, but the majority of oklahoma's smaller public http://www.odl.state.ok.us/servlibs/certify.htm
Extractions: Services to Libraries Public Librarian Certification The certification program has been developed by the Oklahoma Library Association and ODL to fill a library education "gap" in the state. Professional standards are established for librarianship in larger public libraries and school library media centers, but the majority of Oklahoma's smaller public libraries have no standards established for librarian training. The limited funding of smaller libraries and the inaccessibility of library education programs to many areas of the state are the major contributors to this educational gap. It is the vision of OLA and ODL that public libraries in Oklahoma be administered and staffed by trained personnel. Continuing education is necessary to assure that librarians keep abreast of developments in the information age. This, in turn, upgrades the library profession, enriches the individual librarians and promotes quality library services.
Extractions: 26 September 2002 By Sarah Yang, Media Relations Berkeley - A new $2.8 million federal grant will help University of California, Berkeley, researchers battle bioterrorism, infectious disease outbreaks and other emergent public health threats through a new Center for Infectious Disease Preparedness. The three-year grant, announced today (Thursday, Sept. 26), establishes UC Berkeley's School of Public Health as the site of one of four new academic centers for public health preparedness. The academic centers are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the Association of Schools of Public Health. UC Berkeley and the other three new centers - at the University of Michigan, University of Oklahoma and University of South Carolina - will join 15 others funded last February as part of the $2.9 billion bioterrorism initiative launched by President George W. Bush earlier this year. "The weaknesses of the nation's public health infrastructure were made clear in last year's anthrax attacks," said Dr. Arthur Reingold, professor and head of epidemiology at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and principal investigator of the grant. "We learned that we need to improve coordination and communication throughout the public health system, from the local to the national level. These centers for public health preparedness are a major step forward in reaching that goal."
