This philosophy places its central emphasis on reason, individualism, enlightened self-interest, political freedom and a heroic vision of life's possibilities. Following an explosive parting of the ways with Ayn Rand in 1968, I have been asked many times about the nature of our differences. This article is my first public answer to that question. Although agreeing with many of the values of the objectivist philosophy and vision, I discuss the consequences of the absence of an adequate psychology to support this intellectual structure focusing in particular on the destructive moralism of Rand and many of her followers, a moralism that subtly encourages repression, self-alienation, and guilt. I offer an explanation of the immense appeal of Ayn Rand's philosophy, particularly to the young, and suggest some cautionary observations concerning its adaptation to one's own life. This article is reprinted from the Journal of Humanistic Psychology , where it appeared in issue number four of volume twenty-four in the Fall of 1984 on pages thirty-nine through sixty-four. Ayn Rand was at once a philosopher and a professional intellectual who wished to transmit ideas to a broad audience. Furthermore, she was a market intellectual. Like the Sophists of ancient Greece, she sold her ideas in the intellectual marketplace; and, like those unjustly maligned teachers, she has incurred the wrath of the establishment. As a market intellectual, Rand addressed the nonacademic masses, using vigorous and lively prose. She believed in the ability of the average person to deal with basic philosophical issues. This should count in Rand's favor, but more often it is used against her. She is dismissed as a "popularizer"—rather like Plato's attack on the Sophists. Plato distrusted the average person's ability to discern philosophic truth, so he assailed the Sophists—itinerant teachers of wisdom—who sold their wares to all comers. Perhaps modern philosophers agree with Plato's assessment; if so, such elitism is their problem, not Rand's.
