The region's different volcano and lava types originate from different tectonic settings and types of volcanic eruptions, ranging from passive lava eruptions to violent explosive eruptions. This study explores the relationship between the Caribou Inuit and the Fur Trade in the Kivalliq Barrens of Nunavut, Canada, between the years 1717-1900 A.D. It has previously been posited that with the introduction of European technologies during this period, the Caribou Inuit were drawn out of a traditional pattern of subsistence and into a larger world-scale economic. Arctic anthropologists have often used historical data, exclusively, to examine this transition - an approach which necessarily biases the examination of development to a colonial point of view, therefore removing the agency of the Inuit in the process. In general, a common element of such studies is that it is assumed that the Caribou Inuit pursued the new and highly functional technologies introduced by the Hudson Bay Company, such as metal implements and firearms, and by doing so were drawn into an economy of trade. However, the actual process of how European goods and technologies were integrated into Caribou Inuit society, by the Caribou Inuit themselves, has received little attention, and more rarely has this process been studied beyond historical documentation through the use of archaeology. Researching the Inuit? Be sure to add this to your library
Uqalurait is a collection of quotations from the Inuit elders themselves. This book is excellent for research, especially anthropology. It helps you get the "feel" of Inuit culture as well as learn about their worldview. It is the next best thing to talking to the Inuit themselves. I used it when I wrote a paper about Inuit religion, but it can be used for any topic from family structure, hunting practices, leadership in the community, music and dance, astronomy, cosmology, shamanism, death, architecture, etc. So be sure to add this to your library.

The majority of the residents are First Nations and the main languages are South Slavey and English. In 2009 the Government of the Northwest Territories reported that the population was 1,283 with an average yearly growth rate of -0.1 from 1996. Fort Simpson was first started as a fur trading site in 1803 then named Fort of the Forks. The Village of Fort Simpson was permanent settlement in July 1822 when the Hudson's Bay Company constructed a trading post, naming it for George Simpson, then the Governor of Rupert's Land. Until 1910 Fort Simpson was "a company town", with some participation by the Anglican and Roman Catholic Missions. The Dene know it as Liidli Kue, meaning The place where the rivers come together. Pope John Paul II attempted to visit the community in September 1984 as part of his Canadian tour, but was prevented from landing due to fog; in an address over the radio from Yellowknife, he promised to visit in the future. The premise of this study is that it is much more a form of social control, a political activity, a key to identity maintenance and transformation. Greatwilderness areas
The photographs in the book in particular are of very high quality indeed and absorb you into these stunning river wilderness areas. The book is a nice balance of informative text and photography. It covers 10 different rivers and of course cannot be expansive on all these areas in 150 pages.Each river is dealt with in a separate chapter with an appropriate individual map to compliment the map at the beginning of the book showing all 10 rivers. The book blends together well with a common wilderness theme and was pleasing to read. I note the author runs wilderness tours but this aspect is not pushed to the fore at all in the writing, and the text whilst relatively straight forward is informative and holds your interest.It is definitely not a guide book and not particularly written for canoests, which suited me just fine.It provides the statistics of each river in a compact manner(source, length, drop, completion etc) at the beginning of each chapter which adds to the books appeal.It is an excellent book for all readers(even non readers)to enjoy and appreciate the great wilderness areas.The book did not let me down and lived up to what it appeared to promise to the general reader. ... Kiumajut [Talking Back]: Game Management and Inuit Rights 1900-70 examines Inuit relations with the Canadian state, with a particular focus on two interrelated issues. The first is how a deeply flawed set of scientific practices for counting animal populations led policymakers to develop policies and laws intended to curtail the activities of Inuit hunters. Animal management informed by this knowledge became a justification for attempts to educate and, ultimately, to regulate Inuit hunters.
