High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Main Campus is the primary campus of North Carolina State University, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, inside the Beltline. Notable features of Main Campus include the Bell Tower and D. H. Hill Library. The campus is known for its distinctive red brick buildings, sidewalks, plazas, and sculptures; some are dotted with decorative brick mosaics. University Plaza is nicknamed "The Brickyard" because it is mostly a flat, open, bricked area. The Main Campus is divided into three sections: a North Campus, a Central Campus, and a South Campus. The North and Central campuses are separated by the railroad tracks that run through the area. Pedestrian access between these two campuses is by one of three pedestrian tunnels or an underpass at Dan Allen Drive or a bridge at Pullen Road. Of the three pedestrian tunnels, the Free Expression Tunnel is the largest; the other two, nicknamed the Reynolds Tunnel and the Thompson Tunnel, are much more narrow and do not have handicap access ramps. ... Product Description
This edition is written in English. However, there is a running French thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of School History of North Carolina (From 1584 to the Present Time). This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your French-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to “difficult, yet commonly used” English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in French, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to French-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Students who are actively building their vocabularies in French or English may also find this useful for Advanced Placement® (AP®) tests. TOEFL®, TOEIC®, AP® and Advanced Placement® are trademarks of the Educational Testing Service which has neither reviewed nor endorsed this book. This book is one of a series of Webster's paperbacks that allows the reader to obtain more value from the experience of reading. Translations are from Webster's Online Dictionary, derived from a meta-analysis of public sources, cited on the site. ... Read more

Product Description

Terry Sanford (1917–1998) was one of the most important public figures of the postwar South. First as North Carolina’s governor and later as president of Duke University, he demonstrated a dynamic style of progressive leadership marked by compassion and creativity. This book tells the story of Sanford’s beginnings, his political aspirations, his experiences in office, and, of course, his numerous accomplishments in the context of a period of revolutionary change in the South.
After defeating a segregationist campaign in 1960 to win the governorship, Sanford used his years in office to boost public education and advance race relations. A decade later, at the height of tumult on American campuses, Sanford assumed the presidency of Duke University and led it to its position as one of the top universities in the nation. During his more than fifty years as a public servant he was associated with presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter. Sanford was a presidential candidate himself in 1972 and 1976, and he won election to the United States Senate in 1986 where his international commission produced an economic recovery plan for Central America. As one of the last New Deal Democrats in the Senate, he remained passionate about the opportunity for leaders to use government to improve people’s lives.
Terry Sandord draws on Sanford’s considerable private and public archive as well as on the recollections of Sanford himself and his family, colleagues, and friends. This biography offers a unique perspective on North Carolina life, politics, political personalities, and the shifting public allegiances of the second half of the twentieth century that transformed life both in North Carolina and throughout the American South.

4-0 out of 5 stars An informative study of Sanford and his times
From his efforts to improve public education and race relations in North Carolina to his success in transforming Duke into one of the top universities in the country, Terry Sanford left an indelible impact upon both the North Carolina and the nation. In this book, Howard Covington and Marion Ellis provide a sympathetic account of Sanford's life.Using an impressive array of sources, including Sanford's papers and interviews with Sanford and dozens of other figures, the authors chronicle his life and times, from his childhood in Laurinburg to his years as governor, university president, and United States senator.

Yet this is more than just a biography of a great public servant. In seeking to explain Sanford's achievement, Covington and Ellis provide the context of his life and career.Their subject occasionally recedes into the background as they navigate state politics or describe the issues Sanford faced as president of Duke University, but it helps the reader better understand the challenges he faced and the full measure of his achievements. This perspective that they provide makes the book a valuable resource not just for understanding Sanford but the many areas of American life that he effected in his lifetime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written
Outrageous Ambition" by Howard E. Covington, Jr., and Marion A. Ellis is the biography of Terry Sanford. Sanford was a North Carolina politician, child of the depression, President of Duke University, Governor, Senator and failed Presidential Candidate. The book chronicles his life and times. It assesses the impact he had on the state and visa versa.

This book is excellent.

The writers have a readable and exciting style of prose. The narrative moves along well.

The book is not simply a story about Sanford's life, though that is covered in good order. It is a history of the politics of North Carolina from the 1930's to the early 1990's. It would be of benefit to students and teachers, and any reader who wanted to more about this era in state politics. The account of desegregation is especially well written.

As for the biographical nature of the book, it is clear that the authors liked their subject, and made no attempt to hide that fact. This is a clearly stated account of Sanford's life from two admirers. Though the book is not free of some criticisms, the writers measure Sanford's life and find the good outweighed the bad. Their case is strong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tarheel Required Reading
Every Tarheel, or any non-Tarheel who has an interest in one of the most important political figures in the South, Terry Sanford, should read this book.Senator in the NC General Assembly, Governor, President of Duke University, and US Senator, this book covers it all.It provides an interesting look at Southern politics, and how our past still effects us to this day. There should be a "Six Degrees of Terry Sanford" game, as he can be linked to practically anybody in the field of NC or National politics.Kerr Scott, Lauch Faircloth, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, The George Bushes, Al Gore, Jesse Helms, Jesse Jackson, Richard Nixon, Elizabeth Dole & Erskine Bowles (both front runners from their respective parties in the 2002 Senate race) and the list goes on.Terry Sanford witnessed great movements in history. The race issue in the South, a political atmospheric change, the wheeling and dealing of politicians.Throughout he kept his values and goals, which helped him become a symbol of Progressive policies, and helped place Duke University into national prominence. This should be required reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for Tar Heels and politics buffs
Anyone who lives in North Carolina will learn much about the state's recent political history in this book. And anyone who is interested in progressive politics should read it too. Terry Sanford's forward-thinkingapproach to government is an inspiration, particularly in the areas of raceand education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched, insightful, and inspiring.
Former North Carolina Governor and United States Senator Terry Sanford is one of this century's outstanding political leaders. While serving as Governor in the early sixties, Sanford became known nationwide for hiscommitment to improving education in North Carolina.

Covington and Ellis'biography of Sanford offers a great deal of insight into Sanford'sformative years and his political career. The authors researched theirsubject thoroughly, and the reader gains a great deal of insight into NorthCarolina politics and into the historical forces shaping thecountry.

Many of Sanford's colleagues, family, and friends wereinterviewed for this book, and their stories and perspectives add depth tothis book. Many of the characters in the book are still active in NorthCarolina politics, including "Jimmy Hunt" (as he is referred toin the book) who now serves as Governor of North Carolina.

People whostill believe that our government can be a force for good, and that apolitical life can be synonomous with a life of public service, will beinspired by this book and by the life of this outstanding public servant. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Role Model for Oprah & All of Us?
Ms. Charlotte Hawkins Brown is an educational pioneer whose life story is relevant today. This book and another one written about her, "Charlotte Hawkins Brown & Palmer Institute: What One Young African American Women Could Do" is testimony of her love for education and her tireless and creative ways to build a school for poor, children in the Jim Crow South.

Visionaries like her create a legacy for many, many children and families in the South and other parts of the country enabling them to transcend the despair of ignorance and poverty and become the hope that she and their parents saw in them as young children and young adults. I, too, encourage this book for students at all levels to learn about her life,to inspire you, and become awe-struck with the tenacity she possessed in a very dangerous and dark time in our history. Her life inspires us to look around and take whatever actions we can to help others achieve an education. Ms. Charlotte Hawkins Brown's life demonstrates that no matter where you are you, too, can create meaningful solutions in service to others who desire to achieve an education and/or overcome poverty and a better life. Just imagine, if she had access to the money that Oprah does today how much more she could have done?

As other readers have stated, attention educators, administrators and charter school faculty and organizers -- this is a life story that needs to be studied for lessons and best practices that can be culled and tweaked for use today. Peace

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsung heroine
My students (I teach African-American studies) found this book very inspiring. This is essentially the story of Ms. Hawkins-Brown and her efforts to bring a school to the impoverished blacks of North Carolina, and how she succeeded in the darkest days of Jim Crow and lynching. It is an interesting added tidbit to consider that she is an ancestor of the singer Natalie Cole.

This story is similar to those of Booker T. Washington, Mary Mcleod Bethune, Rev. Daniel J. Jenkins, Mary F. Wright, and many other founders of Black southern shcools at the time. It is a shame that stories of this kind have not been passed down to inspire the youth as they were prior to the 1960s. Books like this may hopefully rekindle these traditions at a time when such role models are so strongly needed. ... Read more

This Guide is not only easy to navigate, but also simple to understand. It will be welcomed by law professors and novice appellate attorneys all over North Carolina as a thorough, practical instruction manual on how to file or respond to an appeal in accordance with the Rules of Appellate Procedure. Existing texts are designed primarily to be a universal guide on persuasive writing and advocacy but lack specific references to the local requirements and corresponding North Carolina court decisions on this topic. Professor Williams has drawn on her extensive experience and anticipated questions that may be asked by a student or advocate of appellate law. Corresponding case references provide the reader with context. An extra tool is a thorough appendix with superb examples of appellate documents. Product Description
North Carolina, in the days of her colonial existence, was the asylum and the refuge of the poor and the oppressed of all nations. In her borders the emigrant, the fugitive, and the exile found a home and safe retreat. Whatever may have been the impelling cause of their emigration--whether political servitude, religious persecution, or poverty of means, with the hope of improving their condition, the descendants of these enterprising, suffering, yet prospered people, have just reason to bless the kind Providence that guided their fathers, in their wanderings, to such a place of comparative rest.

On the sandy banks of North Carolina the flag of England was first displayed in the United States. Roanoke Island, between Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, afforded the landing place to the first expedition sent out under the auspices of Sir Walter Raleigh, in 1584. "The fragrance, as they drew near the land, says Amadas in his report, was as if they had been in the midst of some delicate garden, abounding in all manner of odoriferous flowers." Such, no doubt, it seemed to them during the first summer of their residence in 1584; and, notwithstanding the disastrous termination of that, and several succeeding expeditions, the same maritime section of North Carolina has presented its peculiar features of attractiveness to many generations which have since arisen there, and passed away.
