5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for touists
When travelling I like to have a good history of the places we are visiting. My wife and recently spent 2 weeks driving around Newfoundland and I found "As near to heaven as by sea" the perfect historic supplement. The book is well written and very lively with just the right amount of detail. It is written by someone who has a real love of the Province and gives you an understanding of what makes Newfoundland the place it is today. Also if you go to Newfoundland be sure to check out the EAST COAST TRAIL it is not well publized and not well traveled but it is great for 2-5 days hiking.

3-0 out of 5 stars For history buffs
As an ex-pat Canadian living in England, I got this book for Christmas as I was looking for some short stories about Canada to tide me over until my eventual return home to the Homeland. While packed with a lot of history and well detailed facts, I must admit that this book is more for history buffs than those looking for a less history written and more story driven read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up to date
My wife and I travel to Atlantic Canada every summer. We have used a variety of guidebooks including this one, which is definitely our favorite. The authors have obviously spent a lot of time in the region, and as a result they have come up with a good range of places to see, things to do, and where to stay and eat.

The reccommendations of where to stay are particularly helpful. We find the provincial tourist guides good, but their accommodation listingswon't really tell you which are good or bad. This book does, and we find the reviews both accurate and very helpful. Seafood is the favorite food around Atlantic Canada, and the authors have obviously enjoyed researching this section of the book, with choices we rarely find fault with.

Also importantly, the book is very well organized and easy to find your way around. There are no color photos, which is a shame, but otherwise, this book is a worthwhile investment if you're traveling to this part of Canada. ... Read more

Product Description
From 1497 to the permanent settlement in Virginia and thelanding of the Pilgrim fathers in 1620, Newfoundland was the onlycolony and the only possession in North America occupied and governedby Englishmen. This period of over a century is completely overlookedby American historians. To the early American settlers Newfoundlandwas the parent colony, a meager and haggard kind of mother, yet shesaved the ancient colony of Virginia from semi-starvation by a timelycargo of fish. When the New York settlers first tried to establish afishery in Sandy Hook, it was to this colony they applied forassistance and men. The same Devonshire adventurers who traded to andcolonized Newfoundland were the first to make a similar attempt in NewEngland.

The author has endeavored to show the close connection between thisancient colony and the young English settlements on the continent —the story of early struggles and mutual aid between Newfoundland andespecially New England. His sources were unpublished records, officialdocuments and manuscripts.

Lavishly illustrated, this is the ultimate history of Newfoundland, with information about Labrador, the Indians, Moravian missionaries, and the later developments of lumbering, railroads, hunting and muchmore. It contains a large fold-out map of Newfoundland, smaller mapswithin the text, appendices, chronology, statistics, bibliography, lists of manuscripts, and an original name and subject index. Excerpt: Churchill Falls -Churchill Falls were first explored by Europeans in 1839 by John McLean, a trader of the Hudson's Bay Company. MacLean named the river the Hamilton River, after Newfoundland Governor, Sir Charles Hamilton. The falls were known as Grand Falls until 1965 when both names were changed to the Churchill River and Churchill Falls to honour the former British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. In 1894, Albert Peter Low of the Geological Survey of Canada reached the Grand Falls during his study of the large number of iron ore deposits in western Labrador and northeastern Quebec. Churchill Falls as it appeared in 2008, four decades after the water was redirected. In 1915, Wilfred Thibaudeau surveyed the Labrador Plateau and engineered a channel scheme which could be used to divert the water from the river before it arrived at the falls. The scheme would use the natural capacity of the basin, thereby eliminating the need for the construction of massive dams. In 1947, Commander G.H. Desbarats, under the direction of the Newfoundland Government, completed a preliminary survey that confirmed Thibaudeau's findings. However development did not proceed due to several reasons: In August, 1949, Joey Smallwood, Premier of Newfoundland, had the opportunity to see Churchill Falls...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1739952 ... Excerpt: Brian Vincent Tobin, PC (born October 21, 1954) is a Canadian politician. Tobin served as the sixth Premier of Newfoundland from 1996 till 2000. Before entering provincial politics, as well after his resignation as Premier, Tobin served as an MP and Cabinet Minister in Jean Chrétien's Liberal government. Tobin was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1980 election. He was re-elcted in the 1984 election even though Brian Mulroney's, Progressive Conservatives won the largest majority government in Canadian history. It was at this time that Tobin gained prominence as a member of the "Rat Pack", which was the nickname given to a group of young, high-profile Canadian Liberal opposition MPs during Mulroney's government. Tobin was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland. He studied political science at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, but did not complete any university degree. He worked a brief stint as a TV news announcer before joining the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador as a political aide to former federal Member of Parliament and Federal Cabinet Minister Don Jamieson. Tobin was first elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1980. Though the Liberals were badly defeated in the 1984 federal election, he retained his seat and went on to gain prominence as a member of the so-called opposition "Rat Pack". He supported Jean Chrétien during the latter's second campaign for leadership of the Liberals in 1990. Following the 1993 federal election in which the Liberals regained power from the Progressive Conservatives after almost a decade in opposition, Tobin was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=226101 ... Product Description
In this book Gerald Sider rebuilds theories of class and class struggle, at the same time rethinking and making significant the concept of culture. Rooted in the history of the last two centuries of daily life in the maritime villages of Newfoundland and Labrador, the book develops an historical anthropology that interweaves ordinary moments, spectacular customs, and social confrontations, as well as exploring the role of folk culture in daily life, state politics, and labour domination. It also presents an original analysis of merchant capital, the often unexamined context of a great many anthropological studies, and a key factor in the integration of the hinterlands with regional and global economic systems. ... Product Description
When the First World War began, Newfoundland had been without any kind of military organisation for more than half a century. Public spirited citizens immediately formed themselves into a Patriotic Association and within sixty days had recruited, partially equipped and dispatched 537 officers and men overseas. "The Fighting Newfoundlander" is a vivid history of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment - the "Blue Puttees" - and its heroic contributions to the war effort. Gerald Nicholson details the harrowing experiences of the Newfoundland Regiment (the only Canadian unit) at Gallipoli and later at Beaumont Hamel where 710 of the 801 officers and men who took part in the assault died. He also follows them to the Third Battle of Ypres and Cambrai, for which they were granted the title "Royal" - the only army unit to receive such a distinction during World War I. Nicholson also places the regiment in a larger historical context through an exploration of the colonization of Newfoundland and its contributions to the War of 1812, the American War of Independence, and the American Civil War. "The Fighting Newfoundlanders" is an illuminating history of the Blue Puttees and their community. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The History of an Extraordinary Regiment
July 1st is celebrated in Canada as 'Canada Day' in all the provinces of Canada except Newfoundland. In Newfoundland it is known as 'Memorial Day.'

July 1st 1916 was the first day of the Battle of the Somme. On that day 801 soldiers of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment climbed out of their trenches to attack the Germans. In the next 30 minutes the regiment was essentially wiped out. The next morning 69 men answered the roll call. Dead, 233. Wounded, 386. Missing and presumed dead, 91. Every officer was wounded or dead. (These numbers are not exact. Outher sources give slightly different figures. I don't think anyone knows.)

In terms of the overall battle 710 men lost was insignificant, there were 57,470 casualties that day. But for Newfoundland this was a significant percentage of their young men.

The Somme was not the only battle in which the regiment fought. This book covers the history of an extraordinary regiment, the only overseas regiment in the British Army to receive the title of 'Royal.' ... Read more
