Product Description
For a span of more than a century, New York's Chinese communities have grown uninterruptedly from three streets in lower Manhattan to five Chinatowns, over 100 street blocks, across the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. No other Chinese communities outside Asia come close to this magnitude. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars NYC Chinatown Then & Now
Wished there were much more older photos of NY Chinatown during the early 1900s or before. Many older photos were from the 1950s & 1960s.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I was hoping this book would have lots of detailed photos giving an insight of how Chinatowns in NY evolved over the century, but it did not. I could of gotten more information and pictures about Chinatown NY doing an web search on the internet. Don't be deceive by the cover of this book cause not all photographs in the book look like the photos chosen for the cover. Most of the pictures in the book are not taken from the same angle as the history picture for a easy comparison on what has changed over the century. Some of the history photos are so blurred that you can hardly makeout anything. I also did not like how this book was put together, it would talk about Manhatten's Chinatown and then jump to Queens Chinatown without properly explaning and then go back to talking about Manhatten's Chinatown. If you are not from New York City you would not know that it was talking about two different places. Very disappointing indeed and not enough info. I'm just glad I brought this on Amazon and not pay full price for this book at a bookstore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, especially if you don't have a car.
I stumbled upon this book in a bookstore while looking for trail maps. There are some basic maps in this book (don't rely on them as your sole map if you do these hikes) but that's not why I bought the book. I bought the book because it had detailed information on hikes that I was already curious about, plus others that I was not aware of.

In addition to the information and route descriptions, there are "Options" and "Directions" sections for each hike, which are great. The Options section offers ways to make the hike shorter or longer by taking different routes so you can adjust the hike to your experience and fitness level. The Directions section includes not only road directions for access by car, but public transportation options, if available. I have found those to be extremely helpful as I, like many New Yorkers, do not own a car. I knew about a few hikes that you could get to by train, but there were several others in this book that I had no idea about. I would say at least a third of the hikes in this book are accessible by public transportation, with several others within reasonable distance of a train or bus stop (in which case he includes walking directions to the trailhead). With New York having one of the most extensive public transit networks in the world and a substantial carless poopulation, this book was very smart to take advantage of that, and it was the main appeal for me, in addition to the interesting bits of historical context and visual snapshots that make each adventure seem more interesting.

I just bought the book about a month ago and already went on two of the hikes in the book, which were awesome. I plan to go on at least 2 or 3 more before it starts getting cold. Again, make sure you buy the New York-New Jersey trail conference map for the area you plan to hike before setting out, which Skip Card himself encourages. Though the maps in this book are helpful, you will probably get lost if you rely on them alone. So buy this book, buy a map, and get out there! Happy Hiking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to have if you like hiking and live in the city
Saying that I use this book almost every week end should be enough.
This is the best book to have for one day getaway from New York.
Reliable and of good advice.
This is The book I read to chose my week ends hike when I can't leave for more than one day. It has saved my week ends more than once!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent product
Easy to use and informative.I look forward to picking hikes for the summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift for all New Yorkers
I've lived in New York City for ten years, and just when I thought I'd done/seen it all, along comes this great book!I just completed my first hike outlined in "Take a Hike:New York City" yesterday (in the Ramapo Mountains of New Jersey) and I'm hooked.I carried the guide with me and - being a novice hiker - found that all the detail was perfect and wise. And it's smartly written as well with a bit of humor!I might last another ten years in New York now that I've been introduced to another facet of the city I call home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Great book if you've never been to New York before.I found it extemely helpful in planning our trip with lots of advice and "secret" things I would never have seen or planned on.Has a lot about prices, places and pitfalls. The only thing I would have liked to see was some information on travel from the ports.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation and Missing Information
This is a terrible excuse for a guidebook. Its maps are blatantly incorrect: the subway map is a ballpark approximation, at best, and things in Central Park are not located where the map says they are, among others. Its attraction descriptions neglect crucial information about the details you actually need at the sites (the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty in particular), and the restaurant descriptions do not show the complete picture.I don't throw out books I dislike, but this one is going straight to the recycling bin.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy only one book before you travel . . .
Make it this one if you are going to NY.I bought several books and this was the best laid out of all the books and it doesn't try to be a resource for ALL restaurants or ALL stores - it just gets to the best.

I loved nearly every recommendation. The only one that I had a beef with was the "Kid friendly" rating of Mickey Mantles. Not sure how a small bowl of pasta for $10 and no sides is "kid friendly."

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous resource!
We loved this book! We especially liked the author's opinions. Our hotel was right on and so were the restaurants. We appreciated the fact that the author was opinionated.............who needs another book that simply lists all to see and do.We actually felt like real New Yorkers and not just tourists.Kudos Brian!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great overview guide to the BIG APPLE
This book was very helpful.I enjoyed the brief history of NYC and the simple easy descriptions of different sections of NYC.

They have very good suggestions on Cabs, Subways, Buses, Eating, where to stay, suggested itineraries, etc. Loads and loads of contact information for museums and sights to see.

Easy to follow index to look up anything you might want to do or need info on. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots to read
I like books with more images then reading when it comes to travel books and this has a lot of reading to do and not so much travel planned routes

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Travel Guide
I just returned from a trip to NYC.My girlfriend and I had purchased this book several months before our trip and it was a priceless part of our trip.It hit the nail on the head in all areas--because of this book, we experienced the "real" NY.Yes, we did many of the "tourist" trips recommended but we also got into the neighborhoods (walking tour of lower Manhattan)and into a wonderful and fun cooking class at the Institute for Culinary Education. All of Pauline's "little tips" found in the blue boxes on various pages were perfect--example:History Written in Stone Street. It told us where to look and where to eat at every turn.By the time we were done reading this book it had at least 30 sticky notes sticking out from various pages and other pages that were ripped out so that we could carry them with us.NOTE:The best tip in the book is titled:Your New Best Friend:The MetroCard.Do your self a favor and buy the weekong unlimited pass for $25.As Pauline suggested, it gets you all over the city and to and from the airport. The subways are easy to ride. The subway maps, included in the book, tell you what lines to ride and where to get off.Enjoy your trip to NYC and buy this book!!It saved us the price of the book the first day that we were there and we ate at all of the best restaurants!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pauline bites the Big Apple with an excellent guidebook
Each of the "Spend Less See More" guides - including this on for New York City - is well-organized, and includes alternative accommodations to "US$300/night chain hotels," interesting places to eat, sights and attractions (including "gems most visitors miss") and "Insider's" info, like how to attend a TV show taping in New York.

The books are written with a friendly, frank voice that has plenty of strong opinions; I prefer that to bland assessments even if I ultimately disagree.

NYC book highlights:

* The best places to view Ground Zero while it is under re-construction
* The scoop on home stays, including the fact that Pauline's stepsister rents her place out to visitors
* Reviews of hostels in the city (complete with opinions on cleanliness and mattresses) including the Big Apple Hostel at Times Square and family rooms at Hosteling International
* Good info sidebars on eating out and museum-hopping with kids
* How to get cheap(er) theater seats, on- and off-Broadway
* A review of the various tourist pass options
* Sections in the back for family travel, staying wired/connected, and recommended books and movies about New York.

These are comments from my review of the guidebook on my BootsnAll Family Travel Logue - [...] Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, reliable guide
You can't go wrong with this guide. The challenge for NYC, which is overwhelming in size, offerings, activities, etc. is how to figure out what you most want to do where, and what is worth your money and what isn't.This guide offers comprehensive, practical, cost-effective suggestions, whether you are a newcomer to the city or a regular visitor. What I really appreciate is the emphasis on what NOT to waste your money on (any transportation other than the subway), any of those double-decker bus guided tours, etc. And of course there are inexpensive must-dos: the Staten Island Ferry, shopping in Chinatown, walking tours, etc. Investing in this book will save you money every time you go to NYC, and I always bring it with me.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on NYC - not your typical travel guide!

4-0 out of 5 stars More helpful for locals than tourists
It was helpful only if you knew where you were going or knew the area quite well. As a tourist it didnt help much if you wanted to find a specific type of food in a specific area. One night ended up wandering 12 blocks just to find a reasonably priced italian place in UES.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
One word, indispensable. If you like food, buy one every year, AND buy one before you visit any city to plan your culinary adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide
I visit NYC a couple of times every year, and each time I've relied on this guide for finding great places to eat. NYC restaurants come and go, and my copies tend to get dog-eared since they go everywhere with me, so I get an updated copy every few years. Wouldn't visit New York without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference guide
It's good to have a game plan when visiting NYC (or any big city for that matter), it becomes overwhelming sometimes cause there's just too many resturants to choose from. This guide helps me pick out places I wanna go so I don't end up wandering around aimlessly trying to decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best NYC guide bar none
I lived in NYC for 14 years. Now when I help my friends plan their trips to NYC, this is the only guidebook I recommend for them. Complete almost across the board, there isn't a neighborhood guide better -- and it includes all the maps, subway routes, and information they will need.

This, and a recent issue of Time Out New York magazine are all you need for a complete and thorough guide to New York and vicinity....

5-0 out of 5 stars Could Not Have Gotten Along Without It
My husband bought me this guide as a gift for my first trip to New York.I must say that I could not have gotten along without it.Even though my traveling companion had been to Manhattan several times - she even lived there for a period - we were constantly consulting the manual. In particular, the subway map and the map of Central Park were very helpful. As an infrequent traveler, I also found it useful to have the expected gratuities spelled out of me.

I will continue to use the guide to help me sort and identify the many photographs I've taken during my trip.

This is a very valuable tool and the best of the many guidebooks I've come across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michelin Green Guide NYC is a good choice
I purchased the Michelin Green Guuide New York City after borrowing it from the library several times. It was a worthwhile purchase, if only for the subway map.It gives a tourist all the information he/she needs to plan a trip to NYC, how to chose places to see, subway information and restaurant suggestions in the area of the attraction. The other plus about this guide is the shape, which fits into the pocket of cargo shorts or into a tote bag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful!!!!!!

Product Description
Most experts consider economic development to be the dominant factor influencing urban politics. They point to the importance of the finance and real estate industries, the need to improve the tax base, and the push to create jobs. In New York City Politics: Governing Gotham--the first comprehensive analysis of New York City's political system in four decades--Bruce F. Berg acknowledges the key role of economic development, but also maintains that two other forces are equally important.

The first of these is the city's relationships with the state and federal governments, which influence taxation, revenue, and public policy responsibilities. The second is the city's racial and ethnic diversity, resulting in calls for representation, recognition, and equity in the delivery of services. Berg's focus is on all three forces, as well as the interplay among them.He examines these forces within the context of the governance of New York City's political system, including the maintenance of democratic accountability and civil harmony and the delivery of public goods and services

Along the way, Berg covers a range of topics, including the Dinkins, Giuliani, and Bloomberg administrations; the battles over sports arenas; party politics; rising immigrant groups and the role of their leaders; changes to the city's charter; and New York City politics in the post-9/11 era.

Looking at the full range of forces and activities, Berg is able to test major theories that have been used to study urban politics--pluralism, the growth machine perspective, and regime theory--demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of each.

An engaging look at the complex nature of urban politics, this book is the only one of its kind to offer a comprehensive narrative of the challenges, frustrations, and successes of New York's governing institutions, and their prospects for meeting the city's long-term needs. ... Read more

This is a large format "coffee table book" published by the museum to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of NYC. The book is an absolutely wonderful collection of photos and other illustrations from the incredible archive of the Museum of the City of New York and covers the city's history over the last 400 years.

The book is organized into 16 chapters, each covering a specific period of history such as the Dutch founding of the city, or the Gilded Age, or the Great Depression. Each chapter is fronted with an essay, from a historian specializing in that period, about NYC and that period of history. After the essay there are a dozen or so pages of captioned photos, maps, engravings and other illustrations depicting the city during the period. The images focus mostly on the everyday life of the people actually living in the city, rather than depicting the lives of the rich and famous.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest or affection for the City.

One caveat, the books really isn't a general history of NYC. If you're looking for one of those, I'd suggest either Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 by Burrows and Wallace or New York: An Illustrated History by Ric Burns

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Treasure of a Book
I found this book at first in a gift shop (at the full price of $40) and knew I could purchase it for less through amazon.com.I was right. The price I paid was unbelievably low and though used was in excellent condition. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the history of New York.It traces New York from the 17th century to the present with great drawings, photos and articles from the past. It is a wonderful addition to anyone's library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice images, terrible quality
If you are considering giving this book as a gift, think again. The book is printed in China with very cheap materials.Despite the nice photographs, I would be ashamed to give this book as a gift.In fact, I had to replace this book 5 times and I still could not get one that managed to survive the shipping process and arrive at my home in undamaged condition. The materials are that cheap! What a shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars A photo says a thousand words
Not being from NYC, I am still fascinated by the city and and all of its changes. From Robert Moses, Tammany Hall and 9/11- this city has seen it all and it thrills me to know the history of a place I may find myself standing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desert1
The panorama of light and life contained within these pages is extensive. The images portrayed whether maps, sketches, prints, paintings, or photographs take one into the heart and soul of New York City. Having lived there a good part of my life many images were familiar from first hand experience or from the extensive history of New York that every student takes growing up in that school system. However, there are images never seen outside the Museum of the City of New York that tell a dramatic story anyone can not only simply enjoy but stand in awe of.The soul of the city, created as it absorbed so many cultures and people over the years, stands center stage. Time has simply stopped in may photos and one anxiously waits for the people, frozen motionless in ordinary acts of living, to simply start moving again where they left off over one hundred years ago. The excitement of life captured in the 1898 photo of Orchard Street, looking South from Hester Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan is worth the price of the book alone. We are also introduced to many previously existingphotographic studies, essays, and the artists who created them all within this one book. There is great drama here to be visited again and again each time the covers are opened. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
This is a wonderful book that extensively covers the architecture of buildings in New York, from past to present. Full of interesting background information. I can recommend this book to anyone that is interested in New York architecture. Unfortunately, photographs are kept to an essential minimum. Other than that, it was everyting I hoped for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a visitor to NYC
I bought this book a few days before my first visit to New York City. However, just reading very first part of this book gave me good knowledge of both history and architectures of NYC.

This book starts with the bornof New York City in 17th century, and covers many famous (and not sofamous) architectures with about 200 photos taken by the author.Itcovers Georgian influence of 18th Century, Greek revival of 19th century, the Chicago school...etc. The Art Deco Skyscrapers, such as the EmpireState building and the Chrysler building are well described.A wholechapter is devoted to Rockefeller Center. The history of MOMA (Museum ofModern Art) is interesting...

For me, this book seems to have somesmall shortcomings. This book lacks "up to date" information.(This revised edition was first published in 1994.) Also, as a fan of FrankLloyd Wright, I hope Guggenheim Museum have been covered more. ... Read more

One of the first accounts of social variation in language, this groundbreaking study founded the discipline of sociolinguistics, providing the model on which thousands of studies have been based. In this second edition, Labov looks back on forty years of sociolinguistic research, bringing the reader up to date on its methods, findings and achievements. In over thirty pages of new material, he explores the unforeseen implications of his earlier work, addresses the political issues involved, and evaluates the success of newer approaches to sociolinguistic investigation. In doing so, he reveals the outstanding accomplishments of sociolinguistics since his original study, which laid the foundations for studying language variation, introduced the crucial concept of the linguistic variable, and showed how variation across age groups is an indicator of language change. Bringing Labov's pioneering study into the 21st century, this classic volume will remain the benchmark in the field for years to come. ... Read more

Product Description
Kids Travel & Learn - New York City. This Kids Travel & Learn travel activity book is developed for you and your child to have a fun and educational experience while you travel to New York City! Fun activities are mixed with facts about New York City in a way appealing to elementary school age children. Many aspects of New York City are covered, such as geography, history, government, specific sights, animal and plant life, food, sports, and transportation. Also, a wide range of school subjects are incorporated, including reading, writing, math, geography and history. The combination of facts and activities engage the children in a learning experience while they are also having fun. The book begins with the opportunity for the child to fill in information about their trip to NYC. Thereafter the topics follow a logical path, beginning with geography (Where in the world am I?), history (Who's been here before?), government & local geography (What makes up NYC?), getting around (Where in NYC am I?), food (What can I eat here?), sights (including several of the city's favorites), sports (What sports do they like here?) and a summary of the experience. As the children journey through the topics of the book, they will be engaged in: fact boxes, completing quizzes, mazes & patterns, rhyming, adding, applying logical thinking, racing through mazes, connecting dot-to-dots and coloring. It is suggested that older children work independently with the book, while younger children (who are not yet proficient readers) are likely to need some supervision from an adult, or older sibling, to get the most out of the book. The Kids Travel & Learn series is developed by two avid travelers who want to spread the joy of both travel and learning to kids - and adults - of all ages! Conclusion

Comments:

The Other New York is a series of essays that survey the circumstances of the rest of the colony of New York outside of New York City during the American Revolution. Each essay, except one, focuses on the issues and events within a single county. The other essay combines three Central Hudson Valley counties because their circumstances and dynamics were similar. The essays clearly demonstrate the variety of issues and priorities that divided and often distracted various regions of the colony of New York during the Revolutionary period.

The essays work as surveys giving basic information about factions and motives within each county. In some cases, factions were largely divided along religious affiliation. In some counties, class divisions were a major factor with many in the lower classes looking at a change in government as a opportunity to improve class standing. The frontier counties had varying issues such as Indian alliances and who had granted the land patants. The population of Charlotte County was often more concerned with whose land patents (New York's or New Hampshire's) would be recognized as the legitimate patents.

The essays each briefly cover the individual issues of counties over the twenty-five years of the Revolutionary period, although some essays are more tightly focused on the ten to twelve years of violence, war and uneasy peace. The essays each supply several pages of notes a for continued research into a county's circumstances. The notes often include recommended texts that explore specific aspects is much greater detail. The book is all too short in content in that the essays are rich with content and hint at a much greater level of knowledge and research on the part of the authors. The book is nonetheless a good reference tool because of the number of notes, which cite many highly regionalized and less well-known sources.
