Excerpt: Watchung Mountains -The two most prominent ridges, known as First Watchung Mountain (the southeastern ridge) and Second Watchung Mountain (the northwestern ridge), stretch for over forty miles (64 km) from Somerville (in Somerset County) in the southwest through Morris County, Union County, Essex County, and Passaic County to Mahwah (in Bergen County) in the northeast. The less prominent and discontinuous ridge formed by Long Hill, Riker Hill, Hook Mountain, and Packanack Mountain is sometimes referred to as Third Watchung Mountain and lies on the northwestern side of Second Watchung Mountain. It should be noted that the entireties of First Watchung Mountain and Second Watchung Mountain are often erroneously referred to as Orange Mountain and Preakness Mountain. Historically, the names Orange and Preakness have only been applied to specific sections of these ridges. The confusion appears to have arisen from the fact that First Watchung Mountain is said to be composed of Orange Mountain basalt, while Second Watchung Mountain is composed of Preakness Mountain basalt. The names applied to the basalts are actually geologic type localities, that is to say, the type of rock found at Orange Mountain is exclusive to all of First Watchung Mountain, while the type of rock found at Preakness Mountain is exclusive to all of Second Watchung Mountain. Like First and Second Watchung Mountain, Third Watchung ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=602733 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars G is for Garden State
This book, along with the others in this series, is done very well.Pictures are excellent and text is clear and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
I love this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the factoids are really cool. I have purchased about 30 of them so far and have given them away to every child whose birthday party my daughters have been invited. Next I will give away "A is for America" and then, after that has made the rounds, "P is for Passport".All the books in the series are really great. I've purchased other states as well, but "G is for Garden State" is especially close to my heart.8-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Really nice book
We liked this book so much, while we were living in New Jersey we gave it to many of our friends and their kids so they would know more about New Jersey - which is actually a very nice state that most people don't know very much about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping New Jersey
Finding the book, the price (on the low-side), the speed with which it was delivered (fast), the condition (like new). Everything was perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I really thought I'd get to see real mapsbut the most interesting maps are reproductions of large maps and are very hard to read...What good is a picture of a map?
There are a lot of statistics about parts of the State but they seem random. I like perusing an Atlas so perhaps I was expecting too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' if you love New Jersey
This is a wonderfully informative book, the kind you can browse through many, many times and always find some new fact of interest. Also, the price is amazingly low for the quality of the book. ... Read more

Product Description
Living within the influence of one of the largest and most important cities in the world, how does New Jersey define itself? Is it simply a region of commuters, or have communities created effective local governments and satisfying cultural activities for one of the most diverse populations in the country?

In the state with the country's densest population, the region known as North Jersey has sacrificed more than 30 percent of its land area to the vast web of roads and highways that carry more than 300,000 commuters to work in New York. Greater New Jersey probes challenges posed to the identity of New Jersey by the New York-centered mass media, professional sports, and organized crime families, while examining pressures internal to the state itself, including extraordinary social diversity, high population, fragmented governments, extensive political corruption, and diminishing land and natural resources.

Greater New Jersey sets itself apart from other works about the state by virtue of the scope of its inquiry. While contemporary in outlook, the book underscores the role of history in shedding light on the Manhattan and New Jersey of today. Dennis E. Gale examines the complex interactions that knit together a region that has dual citizenship and argues that northern New Jersey is undergoing a gradual transformation to become symbolic of a new kind of suburban area, one that borrows culture, image, and economy from a metropolis but also maintains the day-to-day living patterns of heartland America in the face of rapid social change. Readers interested in the puzzling intricacies of modern life will find much to interest them in this account of a regional identity asserting itself in the face of a looming megalopolis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The recommended kids' guidebook to a fascinating state with loads of American history included in the package
"State Shapes: New Jersey" is the thirteenth book in a series of state-shaped books with covers and pages outlined with (half of) the state's shape, filled with facts and interesting information about the state of New Jersey. Every set of pages features a bottom highlighted question and answer about a special feature of New Jersey. For example, "Where did the word cliffhanger come from? From the Palisades, of course! They were used as a background for gripping scenes in an early silent movie series called 'The Perils of Pauline.' (pp. 12-13)." Other historical and geographical facts and information about new Jersey are presented, with frequent comical illustrations to reiterate background stories. The book is written as a series of questions, part of a dialogue between a kid named Sessalee who just moved to Maplewood from Texas and Edward, the native narrator, an expert on New Jersey! What a fun way to learn facts, traditions, stories, and background about this east coast, Mid Atlantic state. Beginning and ending with a clear, artist's rendition of a map of New Jersey, complete with Interstates 80, 95 and 190, "State Shapes: New Jersey" is the recommended kids' guidebook to a fascinating state with loads of American history included in the package.

Product Description
The ocean resources on which we depend for food, commerce, transport, and recreation are not limitless, nor are ocean waters capable of continual self-cleansing. Alex Lechich makes it painfully clear that the world's oceans are, in fact, in desperate peril: fish stocks are overexploited, other marine resources are depleted, habitat is being lost or its resilience is declining, water contamination is pervasive, and the economic and human costs related to ocean decline are escalating. All of these considerations contributed to a dangerous shipping crisis that threatened the Port of New York and New Jersey's very viability in the early 1990s.

Modern navigational channels and shipping berths must be periodically dredged. Historically, the millions of cubic yards of frequently contaminated muds and sands regularly removed in this way have been dumped at sea. When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency imposed tighter restrictions on ocean dumping in the 1990s, almost all dredging halted, putting the Port of New York and New Jersey's standing as one of the busiest cargo ports in the nation at risk. The crisis was temporarily abated by a Vice President Al Gore-sponsored agreement between environmental groups and government agencies, but many of the original problems remain.

Accessibly written by a scientist intimately familiar with these dramatic events, A Storm in the Port explains the origins, escalation, and specific and broad implications of this port crisis. Lechich explains the science and environmental concerns that come into play, considers solutions to complex dilemmas, and makes clear the desperate need for new ocean policies that tread the delicate line between protecting the world's oceans and preserving their economic and recreational value. This urgently needed book is poised to heighten regional and national interest in ocean policy and related issues, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of the world's oceans. It will be essential reading for professional and lay students of oceans and environmental policy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons learned from Port Story Relevant to Katrina
Glad I did not listen to the Publishers Weekly review before I decided to read the book. As a former Librarian and someone interested in local environmental issues, though not a scientist, I found I was able to absorb more of the book than I initially thought. The book gave me insights into governmental politics as well as learning more about local marine biology. The beaurocratic in-fighting discussed in the book brought to mind the Katrina fiasco. ... Read more
