Product Description

"... solid scholarship.... [It] will not only serve as a model for those studying the New Religious Movements of the late twentieth century, but will offer help to mainline and other religious institutions who are struggling with problems of identity and change in our complex society today." -- Church History

"... a thoroughly enjoyable book that would fit well into a graduate readings seminar on new religious movements....The book deserves a wide reading." -- Nova Religio

"Lucas's study provides a model of how best to combine the methodologies and analyses of the history of religions and sociology. He has provided the groundwork for continued tracking of developments in this new religious movement for comparative purposes." -- Journal of the American Academy of Religion

"... a carefully researched and well-written history of one of the important new religious movements to appear in the United States during the 1960s... the volume can be heartily recommended to all students of American religion." -- American Historical Review

"Lucas has written one of the best informed studies of the evolution of a metaphysical cult into mainline eastern orthodoxy."  -- The Reader's Review

"This is an important book for libraries with holdings in American religion." -- Choice

"... a fascinating narrative... a rich feast for the investigator of the subculture of esoteric religion... " -- American Studies International

"... especially welcome. It offers an in-depth, meticulously documented history of a church, the Holy Order of MANS, that arose from the Christian esoteric mystery tradition and then metamorphosed into a traditionalist Orthodox Christian sect. This unlikely tale has more twists and turns than a whodunit... this volume is that rarest of finds: an academic book that is a delight to read." -- Gnosis Magazine

Traces the journey of a new religious movement from its start as a monastic-style New Age order to its transformation into the more conventional Christ the Savior Brotherhood, an Eastern Orthodox sect. A remarkable story of social and spiritual change in contemporary America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bitter-sweet memories
I was associated with the HOOM through the Christian Community movement that they spawned. I was a charter member of one of the communities for 9 years from June of '75 though June of '83. This book helped me to put my experiences with the Order into context. I was totally immersed in the teachings and the life. It was during the heyday of my hippie years ('68 through '83, all totalled) and the Order was composed almost exclusively from hippies...it was the ultimate hippie/New Age/mystic trip. To be associated with the Order was to be connected with the spiritual heart of hippiedom throughout the country, because it's influence saturated so much of the country. The memories are bitter-sweet. Bitter because we were all deceived by New Age teachings, but sweet because of all of the wonderful people who touched my life so profoundly. This book can give you the facts and history of the Order, but you had to be involved to partake of the heart and soul of it. There will always be a lovely ache in my heart when I think of those years.

3-0 out of 5 stars way too intellectual and boring
Please don't use my name or where I live.(a reader is fine) These people still scare the hell out of me. I could not have gotten through this book, if it's subject wasn't about my life.I was a member of a Christian Community for ten years. This book is way too into socialogical studies for my taste, but it was interesting to find the middle of the story.Someone should write a book about the the individuals this organization really destroyed.Everyone of these stories is about a real infinitely precious human being, a real family, a real life. Here is a man who had real power--spiritual whatever(what was it and where did it come from?)--and created an organization giving spiritual power to street people and sent them out to prey on other people as a way of life.Someone should write the story from the people who are still hiding out who watched their lives destroyed emotionally, spiritually, financially. The people at the top of the heap are generally the people with the highest body count. How they did this and why and where it came from is something I live with everyday. This book is nowhere near the diffinitive answer but it does prove the old adage absolute power corrupts absolutely. Please someone write another book!

3-0 out of 5 stars A book written for academia about a mystical Order
Father Paul Blighton taught, and the Order transmitted "The Middle Path."Timeless, reaching from ancient wisdom into the coming age; universal and applicable to all.
An outside observer might conclude that the Order's teachings incorporated a combination of ideas, but this was not what Order students experienced in their training. We came into a most powerful, integrated experience of Christ in all facets of Being. No frills were added to entertain; only universal truth to transform.
The Light emphasized in all of the Order's teachings, is the Light of Illumination, the Christ Light. It can be seen by one who is being mystically transformed by it, and is not merely symbolic. The stated purpose of the Order was to reach as many souls as possible with the transforming Light of Christ.

3-0 out of 5 stars An oral history. A doctoral thesis.
Let us put this book into a proper persective. This is not _the_ definitive history of the Holy Oder of MANS, but one man's doctoral dissertation based on selective interviews, the author's gleanings of the interviewees' 15 to 40 year old memories. There is much that is inaccurate, coming from hearsay that someone recalled hearing.

The Order had/has a fascinating history and no one else has stepped up to tackle the massive task to document it in it's true fullness and richness. I was a member in multiple capacities from 1969 to 1975, with a brief stint in 1982. I know/knew a fair number of those who were interviewed and many that were not. It has been estimated that the Order touched 10,000 people, to one degree or another.

All in all, this is a book worth reading. Just keep in mind what this text is: the author's doctoral dissertation and an oral history with all the shortcomings thereof.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough, fair and objective account of a new religion.
I was very impressed with this thorough and objective account of thejourney of the Holy Order of MANS from its inception to its eventualconversion to Eastern Orthodoxy.I was a sister in the original Holy Orderof MANS in the late seventies. My experiences, both inner and outer, wereprofound and still deeply shape my life today. The objective facts andsubjective interviews so thoroughly and carefully documented in Lucas' book have helped me make sense of my feelings and experiences both duringand after my time in and around this religion.

In addition, Lucas alsodraws many examples from other religious movements, illustrating the manyand typical similarites between all new relligions of this type. For thosestudying the characteristics of new religions, I believe this descriptivejourney through the experiences of one will help in understanding the many.

In addition, I found this book to be lively and intelligent, neverdull. Although carefully footnoted and documented, it remains engaging fromstart to finish. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History, Culture and Relgion of the Hellenistic Age
A detailed overview of the time from Alexander the Great up to Roman period. The only thing better was Volume II. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative; a must read!
As a religiously observant Jew, I found this book to be an excellent read.It details the background and culture of the Hellenistic age.Though it does not get into many details of the syncretism of Hellenistic ideas with direct comparisons to the "New Testament" a person who is well read in the NT will see the parallels immediately. If you want to understand the language and contexts in which the NT was written, this book will help you understand the likes of the diatribe, gymnasia, and the like.

Though I found his treatment lacking on the Jewish side - obviously with biases from a German-scholar's standpoint - it was still overall a good summary.I would recommend "The Jews in the Time of Jesus" by Wylen or "How to Read the Bible" by Brettler for a better liberal scholar's work on 2nd Temple Judaism. If you're looking for more conservative Jewish views, a search for counter-missionary organizations can provide what you are looking for.

I assume many mainstream traditional Christians may shy away from this book since it is a liberal theological approach to their scriptures, but I know of no other easy-to-read book that will detail the Greek language, culture and religion as well.Though it does not give as many details as more focused books can on more precise subjects, this is an excellent beginning book for the curious.

Absolutely essential for any person who studies comparative religions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This book provides an excellent reference source on the background of the NT.It is not the sort of book meant to be read straight through, but one which I have found myself returning to again and again to look up this or that name, movement, or event.A must have for students and pastors.

4-0 out of 5 stars History, Culture and Religion of the Hellenistic Age
Helmut Koester's History, Culture and Religion of the Hellenistic Age is Volume One to his Introduction to the New Testament. It is intended to provide an introduction, but the reader will come away with much more than that. This review covers only the first volume.

Koester covers a wide range of topics pertaining to the ancient world including political, religious, intellectual, and technological histories and seems to demonstrate thorough knowledge of each. His intention is to provide a linear transition between Old and New Testaments and place the entire Bible into its proper historical context. Many religious groups including the Maccabees, Pharisees, and Samaritans are placed in perspective to the greater world in which the interacted. The reader will fully understand what the political and intellectual world was like during the time Christianity was being established.

Koester's unique way of identifying chapters and subparts makes for quick and easy internal cross reference, though his alpha-numeric style is similar to a government regulation or corporate standard operating procedure.

Though his knowledge of his subject matter is unquestionable, Koester does demonstrate several weaknesses that readers must accommodate. He has a strong pro-Hellenistic bias, particularly evident in Chapter 3 when he claims Galen's books are "the last truly great medical works from the ancient times" or how the "Roman period and beyond" were a "decline of scholarship and science."Koester's work is occasionally detailed to the point of tediousness. His chapters on the many religious cults and philosophies do not appear to be written for the casual reader. The level of detail demonstrates his knowledge but come across as somewhat confusing. He also dwells exclusively in the world of political and intellectual leaders, the common people are not described in any convincing detail. This is peculiar because the focus of the Bible, particularly the New Testament is upon the ordinary people who often get caught up in the intrigues and realities of the Roman world.

A final weakness is in his presentation style. He provides no notes to any sources throughout the book.He lists bibliographies for each chapter, but does not differentiate between his work and that of others.

Yet this is still a valuable book that can teach much of the world of the New Testament.Christianity and the New Testament did not evolve in a vacuum, and Koester does much to help the reader fully appreciate what the world in which they did emerge in was like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Critical Methods Champion
Well, much to Laura Nasarallah's schagrin I am off and running with H.Koester's book.Mr. Koester is one of the stalwart figures of the Historical Critical hermeuntic and he proves it here with a text of stunning scope and good accuracy.Although he fails on a few points, the overall introduction that he provides is invaluable to students of the field and a wonderful primer on the method.Overall I think that any one with an interest in antquity or biblical investigation beyond the confines of Sunday morning will greatly enjoy this text. But one thing, make sure you have plenty of caffiene ready. ... Product Description
This volume deals with the transformation of religious creativity in the late modern West. Its point of departure is a set of esoteric beliefs, from theosophy to the New Age. It shows how these traditions have adapted to the cultural givens of each successive epoch. The claims of each movement have been buttressed by drawing on various structural characteristics of late modernity. The advance of science has resulted in attempts to claim scientific status for religious beliefs. Globalization has given rise to massive loans from other cultures, but also to various strategies to radically reinterpret foreign elements. Individualism has led to an increasing reliance on experience as a source of legitimacy. The analytical tools applied to understanding religious modernization shed light on changes that are fundamentally reshaping many religious traditions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Claiming Knowledge
The present study is not intended as a catalogue of the opinions of the various Esoteric positions. To discuss general or theoretical aspects of the Modern Esoteric Tradition without entering into the empirical specifics leaves the reader in a fog of abstractions; referring exhaustively to a vast corpus of source texts entails the risk of constructing a under-theorized descriptive study. In order to strike a balance between the descriptive andanalytic goals of this study, the author resorted to using case studies from the consulted sources as exemplars. These particular cases are subjected to a symptomatic reading, a mode of interpretation that uses empirical data to highlight a broader point. Although the narrow focus and the chosen approach are, as in any other case, a compromise, at least it has the double advantage of extendability and falsifiability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pivotal Examination of New Age Claims
This book has the potential to empty American public libraries of half of their holdings. If you believe that the key to a better world is through "feeling good,"as Wayne Dyer claimed in his PBS Special, then this book is for you.If you believe that modern reincarnation, reiki, feng shui, aromatherapy, and chakras are based on ancient wisdoms of trial and error research, this book is for you.If you believe that the energy of the body is based on science, this book is for you.If you believe that quantum physics unquestionably supports mind science theories that the world is nothing more than an energy field, this book is for you. This book will hit you hard, but it will present you with facts about your spirituality that must be addressed if your movement is to survive.

The New Age Movement is one that is largely ignorant of its own tradition.Hammer presents a cross-section of its history and its primary experiential basis for knowledge which provides a semblance of congruity to a very diverse and flamboyant body.

Depending on your viewpoint, the New Age is either an opening or a closing of the eyes. This book will help you decide with striking revelations regarding the histories of beliefs that shape the movement.

This is a book to be celebrated, and a book to commission many likeminded studies. The book should be regarded as a genesis.Let the research begin. The esoteric tradition of our age has made too many unanswered claims.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epistemology of Esoteric Belief.
_Claiming Knowledge_ by Olav Hammer is an examination of some of the esoteric developments within belief systems within the West ranging from Theosophy (of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, for example) to New Age belief systems. The book includes a vast array of material from various beliefs which have arisen in a post-Enlightenment West which increasingly experiences the pressures of globalization and decline, c.f. Spengler.Much of the esoteric material presented within this book consists of belief systems which offer a reaction to modernity (either by looking directly back to a distant past or a vanished culture or civilization, attempting to import systems of knowledge from distant cultures, in particular the East, or by attempting to merge ancient belief with modern day science and rationalism).Olav Hammer's book is full of details about these various belief systems and offers much of comparison and contrast between the unique systems ranging from the Theosophy of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky carried on by Annie Bessant, Charles Webster Leadbeater, and Alice Bailey, the Anthroposophy of Rudolf Steiner, the psychoanalysis and depth psychology of Carl Gustav Jung (with precursors in mesmerism), the Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) of Elizabeth Clare Prophet, the experiences of occultist and psychic Edgar Cayce, various attempts to merge science with the occult through spiritism and the opposition of spiritism and "skepticism" (of the various skeptical societies, for example), attempts to merge modern day Darwinian evolution with esoteric belief, and attempts to merge modern day physics and cosmology (in particular Quantum Mechanics, but also the Theory of Relativity) with various esoteric beliefs, New Age philosophies ranging from those of _The Aquarian Conspiracy_ of Marilyn Ferguson to _The Celestine Prophecy_ of James Redfield, and various New Age beliefs about crystals, auras, chakras, and personal growth and transformation through healing.Much of what is presented here falls into categories. For example, often lost civilizations and distant cultures are used as sources of tradition for constructed esoteric and New Age belief systems. These include lost civilizations such as those of the legendary Atlantis or ancient Egypt and Tibet, as well as distant cultures such as those of the Orient or even the Native Americans, Aztecs, or Mayans. Also, various forms of healing are discussed frequently within the book. These include methods often excluded from the mainstream Western medical community.A particular case is that of the Indian medical doctor Deepak Chopra who offers a system of New Age healing and healthy mindedness. In many ways, much of these methods of healing can be related to the discussion of the "Religion of Healthy Mindedness" found in some of William James' works (in particular see _The Varieties of Religious Experiences_).In an attempt to re-enchant science, which is believed to be fallen from the Naturphilosophie of the 18th century to pure materialism and rationalism, many have opted to incorporate occult philosophies as well as vitalism into physics or biology. In particular, the author makes an interesting discussion of the Quantum Theory, relating the standard, but inferior, Copenhagen interpretation of the collapse of the wavefunction to some of the alternatives. At the far extreme opposed to the Copenhagen interpretation stand such ultra-idealists as Fritjof Capra and Gary Zukav (arguing that reality is in fact consciously constructed, often surpassing the idealism even of such early proponents as Bishop Berkeley and incorporating Oriental and Eastern mysticism into their interpretation).Much of New Age belief hinges on the idea of a coming Aquarian Age and an end to the Age of Pisces (perhaps, the Age of Pisces, that of the fish, is indeed the age of Christ - Christ of course being symbolized as the fish by the earliest Christians in the catacombs, c.f. _Hamlet's Mill_ by Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechand.)In many ways, the New Age movement is similar to that of the Romantic reaction to the Enlightenment, with an emphasis on individual experience. Thus, the author will provide several case studies including details of healing practices, Jungian psychotherapy, past lives therapy, and reincarnation as useful interludes emphasizing individual experience.Within medicine the school of Anton Mesmer is important for its role in the discovery of the unconscious, later formulated explicitly by Eduard von Hartmann, a disciple of Schopenhauer. There is much more contained in this book from what has been laid out here, and the book offers a complete bibliography including many of the different movements which have played a unique role in shaping modern day esoteric belief systems. The author contrasts etic and emic historiography, demonstrating how what the particular belief system offers as its own history or traces as its own tradition may not always hold up under the rigorous standards of scholarship from within the academy.Still, I believe that much that is present here is indeed uniquely valueable for any student of religious beliefs, alternative beliefs, hidden or lost knowledge, or with a general interest in the esoteric, the occult, or the modern day New Age.

For an alternative perspective on the New Age movement, written from a somewhat reactionary point of view, with basis in the Traditionalist school of Rene Guenon and Frithjof Schuon consult the work _The System of Antichrist_ by Charles Upton. ... Read more

Thayer White's explanation of his experiences and the conclusions he has reached are clearly and plainly stated.A seeker will not have to find another book to define any of his words, and they flow smoothly, giving an easy read. One feels like they have sat down and discussed spiritual thoughts with the author in person. The little 'joke' breaks between chapters are fun and thought provoking.Lots of answers here for those finding the law of attraction fickle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear-cut analysis of a difficult theme
I found this book to be a very clear and insightful critique of the New Age Movement. The author gave a wonderful synthesis of its main ideas and teachings. This is not an easy matter, as the New Age Movement has many facets to it, and many of its ideas are ambiguous to say the least. He goes on to show how New Age interpretations about Jesus, His life and Christianity contradict the facts as well as the Bible. He gives numerous quotes to support his assertions.
I was heavily involved in the New Age Movement for 16 years and found it to be devastating.I don't think I could have done as good a job evaluating this movement.I come into frequent contact with New Agers, and the ideas in this book will help me talk with them in a more informed manner, i.e. with proofs, quotes, etc.
One thing I found confusing however was his use of the phrase "orthodox Christian".I am not sure what he means by this.I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian, so I found the term a bit offensive, as I don't think he means that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Effort to Defend Against and/or Delay Advancing Human Consciousness

Until about 1958, I might have shared the beliefs in this book.A lot has happened during the past half-century that is not specifically detailed in the Bronze Age scribblings that are bound in a book that allows for no updates/revisions.It is as though the great Universal Life Force identified by many names including "God" is bound and gagged by the printed word; no longer permitted to speak directly to the humanity whom He created.

This book is interesting reading and opens a peep-hole revealing the contents of closed minds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unmasking The New Age
Sorry, but I have read many books on this subject and although he may have written this book for all the right reasons, I cannot believe some of the stuff he says in his book. Especially about Rock N Roll.If it had not been for the group Petra which he blatently calls Ocult or devil worshippers, I would have never been able to embrace the Love and Grace of God.He claims they made devil horns like what is done in Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin concerts and what he saw was the symble for I love you in sign language.I've been to many of their concerts and that is the sign language they use for I Love You.I would recommend however, Evangelising The New Age, Invasion Of Other God's both excellent books in this area.Sorry, I would't be given this book again even if somebody dropped it on my door.

Although dated now, this is still a proper intro to the subject. The movement as Groothius points out is complex and dynamic, yet he provides the elements to it which can be flushed out throughout the culture.

How significant to reflect back how the infiltration of this movement into media and medicine and education and government is now so fully entrenched.

More to the point and more serious is this infiltration into the church, e.g. positive thinking. The comments here alone should awaken Christ's church to get rid of this leaven which is not new, just combination of old deceit with new terminology and players.

Great source!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars, with a caveat
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Groothuis on a fairly recent seminary visit and had the privilege of talking with him in his office for nearly an hour about things philosophical.Contrary to what a previous reviewer intimates regarding this particular book, Groothuis is one of the elite Christian scholars in regards to worldview issues, and his treatment of the New Age in this book, while somewhat dated, is outstanding. It engages in a respectful and sober discussion about the influence of the New Age upon our culture, and even within the church. As such, it is likely to make some Christian readers unhappy since it will likely challenge such readers who might be engaging in certain New Age practices to rethink such participation in light of the potent spiritual consequences.

This book attempts to describe New Age influence in public schools, and in the fields of medicine, science, politics, and American spirituality generally.I especially appreciated Groothuis's emphasis early on that he does not subscribe to a 'New Age conspiracy' which lends solid credibility to his approach. After reading the book, one might come away thinking that indeed such a conspiracy exists, but this is not the conclusion that Groothuis himself appears to subscribe to.

Groothuis's treatment of how the New Age is impacting the fields of science and politics were especially insightful. He properly points out in the field of science that while New Age influences have actually corrected a number of erroneous presuppositions held sacred by many secular humanists and naturalists, this does not compensate for the New Age's abandonment of truth and the resulting chaos it brings to any field of study if consistently followed.Further, Groothuis brilliantly exposes how New Age influences have penetrated the American federal government, with taxpayer money being spent promoting decidedly New Age beliefs and practices. One wonders (though I confess it's no mystery to me) why the more militant church-state separatists haven't been up in arms about such a mixture of taxpayer money and religion, but that's a whole other topic. This sticks out like a sore thumb even more in light of the caveat I discuss below.

Groothuis's treatment of the New Age's contribution to American spirituality (along with its influence in medicine) are likely to be the sections that laypeople might most object to.In these two sections, Groothuis properly goes into some detail in showing how New Age medicinal/spiritual practices are not innocuous or devoid of any spiritual meaning, but in fact promote a spiritual worldview that cannot be harmonized with orthodox Christianity without severely compromising it.A number of these practices are things that all kinds of Christians from the lukewarm to the devout are engaging in today either because they don't know any better, or even worse, because they are not discerning enough to see how these New Age practices are built upon and promote a philosophy that directly contradicts the message of the Bible.Because such practices like yoga, TM, acupuncture, homeopathy, and others have become mainstream even within the church, I strongly recommend this book as an effective countermeasure against the wholesale adoption of these practices by the body of Christ without any discernment.

The one caveat I have about the book is its age. This book was written in the late '80s/1990, and as such, it is somewhat dated.Because the 'New Age' is a movement that makes it up as it goes along and is a rather fluid movement, readers looking for a current Christian critique of this movement might be a bit disappointed in this effort, although I think much of the material is still current. The date of this book is noteworthy because when Groothuis talks about the marriage of the New Age and the Department of Defense, as one example, this is what was happening 15 years ago, not yesterday. What is happening today is quite probably even more pervasive influence of the New Age with more taxpayer money being spent on New Age seminars, medicinal experiments, etc.For the Christian who has grown weary of the recent perversion of the church-state doctrine that has tried to put Christianity in an ever smaller and quieter box, this data from Groothuis makes it crystal clear the new standard of church-state separation is not being consistently followed, and that it certainly seems like we are living in an age of different rules for different faiths.Such a conclusion is formidable ammunition for the Christian seeking to expose the hypocrisy, uneven handedness, and rank bias of those who claim to cherish neutrality on this issue. As a result, I heartily recommend this book for a variety of reasons. ... Well Texe Marrs was never a major player in the fundamentalist whacko circles. He was always overshadowed by Jack T. Chick. Still this book has some silly bits like blaming Rainbow Brite (Bright?) for children coming to Satan and Saturday morning cartoons for your kid carving up the neighborhood cats. Of course, I love the Bible as evidenced by my editing of the book She Nailed a Stake Through His Head: Tales of Biblical Terror but you have to read it with your brain and not just the kneejerk reactions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important factual information
A well written introduction to the New Age. What is the New Age? The author convincingly shows that while Christianity is going through varying degrees of criticism that replacement beliefs are being promoted. That unidentified "spirit guides" wish to take control if you let them. That for some decades, a new awareness or consciousness or even the physical manifestation of some being will usher in a pseudo-utopia and/or another step in man's development.

An actual look at history shows that these things did not happen but even today, people are being asked to believe something else. In summary: the author cautions Christians to be wary of deceptions, to be wary of strange sounding ideas that promise amazing things, and to watch as they continue to reimagine and repackage themselves. There are people out there who are committed to these things and they wish others to join them. There is real evil out there.

This book is a must read!It really explains what the NAM is and what it is all about.Given how long ago it was written, it's scary to see how much the NAM has crept into our everyday lives.I bought a couple copies for family members that are into the NAM.I'm praying this book will turn them away from it.
