If you seriously want to learn more about NDEs SKIP this book
A collection of poorly written accounts, embroidered with lots of extraneous padding material, this book is not for someone who is serious about investigating NDEs. These first hand accounts, (most of which are not NDE accounts, but new-age cliche "spiritual experiences") are written by people who really don't know how to write.

What is more damaging to the book's credibility is that some "members of the club" seem to have invented their stories just so they could join the club and write a chapter. There are too many details in several of the stories that just do not jibe with all the hundreds of other cases with which I am familiar. For example, I've never heard of an authentic NDE experiencer say that they learned that (prior to their NDE) they were going straight to hell for the sin of being an Episcopalian. If anything, true NDE experiencers are more inclusive and loving, not more narrow minded and intolerant.

This book reads like exactly what it seems to be; a group of friends with no training or experience as writers or researchers each writing a chapter and calling the whole thing "a book" just because it has pages. There are so many excellent books on the subject of NDEs it would be a shame for someone interested in the field to waste their time and money on this volume.

A dvd with interviews Would have been GREAT
This book was given to me after the loss of several family members. After so many nights of strange dreams and strange feelings during the day , my priest friend gave me a copy. I share the book with many friends and strangers. What a loving effort by those involved. Thank you

As I grow older, more and more of those who shared my life have passed away. I was given this book five years ago when my father passed away. Traveling into the realms of aliens and clowns
The beginning and introduction of this book put me off a bit, due to his hinting at this wonderful molecule dimethyltryptamine(DMT) to be the 'spirit' molecule. I took this to be tied in with some form of myticism, however my fears were quickly expelled when I got into the meat of the book. His journey in struggling to use a psychadelic compound to test patients and see how it affected them is an interesting one indeed, starting with the troubles of allowing an illegal substance to be used in a research environment. The tales of the DMT induced trips range from dreams that could be explained under careful psychiatric analysis, to the unexplainable 'very real' alien abductions. This book does a good job in not only showing the effects of DMT, but also Strassmans struggle to try to explain the workings of this intricate compound. This book is great for any psychonauts looking to read about DMT and it's effects, as well as anyone who is interested in seeing how one of the most powerful psychedelics can affect the human consciousness.

Conjecture
Hard to pin down, but what isn't?
It did seem therapeutic by some volunteer reports.
I've had a bad 'endogenous DMT' trip (near death, but with mystical after-effect). I like the analogy of cognitive change in spectrum sensitivity.

Excellent phenomenology, but short on neurophysiology
This is a great book by a fascinating, dedicated, and well-educated man. Especially his thoughts on going through the agonizing process of getting official government sanction to his experiments, and his virtual 'ex-communication' from his Buddhist community are interesting.

The phenomenology of DMT, as related through the various case studies, is very interesting. However, the book (actually the studies it describes) were very short on neurophysiological data, which is to me the interesting part. I don't need convincing from scientific studies that DMT experiences can be bizarre, terrifying, or beautiful. It's too bad that after getting the government permission to finally study this drug legitimately, more scientific measures weren't taken. To have had EEG recordings, at least, or fMRI/PET studies at best, would have been phenomenal.

Further, though extremely interesting and in line with my own thoughts on endogenous neurotransmitters producing spontaneous mystical states, these speculations are, in the final analysis, nothing but. There has been nothing done in this line of research, i.e. trying to measure minute neurochemical fluctuations during peak experiences. I believe Dr. Strassman is working on projects to measure exactly this, but for now these hypotheses are just intriguing guesswork, and I don't know if the actual results of the studies really warranted the unrestrained (albeit interesting) speculation.

Astral Travel

Great Book. You need to Pray to the Creator God before reading this book. This wonderful Deeply Spiritual book needs to be Read with God's Help. It's not a Joke. If You read this book as described You will Astral Travel and You will be safe and enjoy new and wonderful Worlds.

Not Enough Information
Since I've had one amazingly wonderful, beautiful spontaneous OBE about a year ago, & nothing since then, I decided to begin searching for suggestions on how to instigate another OBE experience.I purchased "Come to Wisdom's Door" hoping it would provide me with some techniques for dealing with the fear of the unkown (which I think may be blocking me), as well as various techniques I can do to bring about such an experience again, on a more conscious level - however it just didn't have enough information on these things.In fact, in the addendum, the author states that techniques only serve an "earth-bound" purpose - to which I highly disagree.

I also had trouble reading the first couple of chapters, as the way it was written was quite "odd", and so I found myself having to re-read sentences several times before it clicked.

Overall, although I did find some useful ideas in this book, it just didn't have enough of the information I am searching for. ... Read more
