    Extractions: Tourism N.B. About New Brunswick - History When Samuel de Champlain and other Europeans began to visit New Brunswick in the earlv 1600s, they were met by Maliseets and Micmacs. The early French farmers settled at the head of the Bay of Fundy and up the St. John River Valley as far as present-day Fredericton and called the land Acadia. Fall-out from the English and French wars in Europe resulted in the expulsion of more than 5,000 Acadians in 1755. Some of them escaped to what was then a remote and uninhabited coastline along the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Chaleur Bay. Today we call it the Acadian Perninsula. Others returned to France or fled to the United States, many settling in Louisiana. In 1783 it was the English who were refugees. During the American Revolution some citizens from the eastern seaboard wanted to remain loyal to the English crown and fled to Canada. So many landed in Saint John that by 1785 they were able to incorporate Canada's first city.

One of our national newspapers recently carried a series on Canada's history, ending with an editorial denouncing Canadian's ignorance of Canadian history and blaming diversity. The editorial complained that the main stream of history is neglected because students are busy learning the stories of women and others. "Wa-a-ah! We don't want to learn about women" is a peculiar contribution to a national debate. Life as evidenced by the topics in any daily newspaper, is made up of personal stories, social movements, labour conflicts, ethnic conflicts, regional struggles. What military and political leaders do - which is the traditional stuff of history - should not be all that is admitted into history, especially since their actions are purportedly in reaction to those other life events.

Students of History acquire a broad knowledge with the opportunity to specialize in Canadian, American, European, British and Ancient history. Over the course of their studies they learn to organize detailed information; to develop an effective system of investigating a problem and to write both reports and essays with clarity. Most importantly, their analytical skills are useful in dealing with contemporary problems. Honours Students apply to the Department of History and Politics for permission to honour in History in the term in which they attain 60 ch. They must complete the History Honours requirements in the next 60 ch of their 120 ch Honours program. To be eligible for admission to Honours, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in History courses. This minimum must be maintained for the duration of the Honours program. Students must obtain a minimum grade of C for history courses to be credited towards Honours in History. The decision to admit a student to the Honours program rests with the History faculty.

A Brief History of Logging in New Brunswick N ew Brunswick’s logging industry began on a small scale around the year 1670 mostly by the French settlers with a mill in Charlotte County. It was not until a century later with the influx of American Loyalists and British settlers that the industry made a bigger impact. It was in this period that giant White Pines were reserved first by the French Crown and shortly after the British Crown for shipbuilding during the Napoleonic War. These giant trees were 200’ in height and over 7’ in diameter and were all cut by early 17th century. [South Bay River Boom c.1866] T here were over 300 sawmills at the peak of the logging industry between 1810-1840. Mills were always located near a river as this was the only means of transportation until the late 19th century. The logs were dumped in the water in the spring and were gathered at a booming area for sorting. Many logs became water-logged and sank, river log-driving was practiced until only 40 years ago. There were so many logs that the logging operations always allowed a 5-15% rate of loss, due to sinking. Many of them are long lost, but we are retrieving the ones left behind, truly rare treasures.

The area was the subject of numerous conflicts between the French and British empires during the later 1600s and early 1700s. The region was ceded to Great Britain in 1710. Following the final defeat of the French in 1755, more than 5,000 Acadians were forced into exile from their lands by the British. Some of them escaped to what was then a remote and relatively uninhabited coastline along the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Baie des Chaleurs, where these Acadian settlements grew and thrived. Today, this region is known as the Acadian Peninsula. In 1783, refugees loyal to the British Crown began to land at the mouth of the St. John River in what was then part of the Province of Nova Scotia. They were fleeing from persecution in the aftermath of the American Revolution and came from as far south as Georgia and as far north as Massachusetts. These refugees were not all of British origin, but included German, Dutch and Black Loyalists. The Black Loyalists included a number of freed slaves, but there were a small number of loyalists who brought their slaves with them to New Brunswick.

    Extractions: H 137 Title: Natural History Society of New Brunswick fonds. 1941-1969; predominant 1941-1949. 21 cm of textual material Administrative History: The objectives of the Natural History Society of New Brunswick were research and making known the results of this research so that it could be put to practical use. After incorporation in 1883, the Society began the annual publication of a scientific journal called the Bulletin of the Natural Society of New Brunswick . The rapid development of the educational features of the Natural History Society soon made larger quarters necessary. As a result, the Provincial Museum was formed which was incorporated as a provincial body in 1929. The Natural History Society merged with it in 1932 to the extent of depositing in the larger building the extensive collections and library formed through the years of collecting. In November 1942, in the process of re-organization and with expanded membership, the headquarters was transferred to the University of New Brunswick and the publication of the bulletin resumed through financial aid from University funds. A change in the name of the bulletin was made in order for published papers originating outside of the province, but within the general Acadian region, to be included. The original name "New Brunswick Nickel and Chromium Plating Works" was changed to the current name in the 1960's. In the early 1930's the company gained expertise in the hard chromium plating process which was new to the industry. This expertise contributed to the war effort by adding the finish to aircraft wing hinges and torpedo sleeves. Cadmium plating was done on military hardware, silver on electrical contacts and nickel on parts for the Manhattan project. In 1946, the company moved for the third time to a 50,000 sq. ft. facility to meet the growing post war demands. The fourth move came two years later when the company abandoned high-volume commercial plating to return to the industrial market where plating experience and expertise were scarce. With a reduced work force, the company hard chrome plated dies, rolls, shafts and molds. It was one of the first plating job shops to acquire an FAA repair station license and to plate critical aviation parts. They silver and gold plated wave guides, cadmium plated and phosphated radar cabinets, zinc, nickel and copper on military hardware for the Korean Conflict.
