Product Description

A Graphical Approach to Algebra and Trigonometry illustrates how the graph of a function can be used to support the solutions of equations and inequalities involving the function. Beginning with linear functions in Chapter 1, the text uses a four-part process to analyze each type of function, starting first with the graph of the function, then the equation, the associated inequality of that equation, and ending with applications. The text covers all of the topics typically caught in a college algebra course, but with an organization that fosters students’ understanding of the interrelationships among graphs, equations, and inequalities.

With the Fifth Edition, the text continues to evolve as it addresses the changing needs of today’s students. Included are additional components to build skills, address critical thinking, solve applications, and apply technology to support traditional algebraic solutions, while maintaining its unique table of contents and functions-based approach. A Graphical Approach to Algebra and Trigonometry continues to incorporate an open design, with helpful features and careful explanations of topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD CONDITION!!
Very well kept used book. A few dents in the hardcover and corners somewhat worn but hardly noticable. No marks in book or outside.

4-0 out of 5 stars No metric?!
A neat aspect of this book is how it starts with an extensive Review chapter. Going over concepts like elementary geometry and algebra. This addresses a problem faced by many textbook authors. The audience can have widely divergent backgrounds. So the Review aims to calibrate students to a known base.

The regular chapters then each go into a profusion of examples. Often with colourfully drawn diagrams. It is granted that some students with intrinsic ability will only need a few such examples to grasp the ideas in them. But the authors clearly hope that by furnishing enough examples, most diligent readers will be able to latch onto and understand some.

Perhaps the hardest sections may be on analytic trigonometry and its applications. The numerous questions on proving trig identities can be fun to some and opaque to others. I enjoyed this stuff in other, earlier texts. But some readers will need to spent a lot of time scrutinising these chapters.

What is striking about the examples is that they use Imperial units, like feet and miles per hour, instead of metric units. By now, most science and engineering texts, even in the US, have gone over to mostly, if not entirely, metric. Seems discordant and slightly archaic to find a text that does not do so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Trig? Entertaining? Wait a minute!
Creating a story to help students learn math is long overdue. While the story isn't necessarily the greatest, anything that gives the student something to associate the concepts with is a helpful memory aid. This is a step in the right direction. Now a Trig cartoon or something would be really great.

2-0 out of 5 stars fairy tale is distracting
I got this book a while ago, but I gave up reading it after a few chapters because of the fairy tale that is the story line.
I would not recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn or refresh their trigonometry

2-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, but poorly organized and executed
This book is ideal for people who want to learn the basics of trigonometry, on their own time.I do NOT recommend this as a secondary resource for learning Trigonometry as a course in school. The book assumes the reader knows a few basic things (or rather, remembers them from algebra) and sometimes gives examples with little explanation of why they are doing each step.I found the book hard to read unless you go page by page.It is not a great book for a quick reference either.

Conclusion: If you are interested in Trigonometry's applications in the real world, have a basic knowledge of algebra and geometry, want to look into trigonometry in your free time, and don't mind reading much, this book is for you. This book would be a nice refresher for people who took Trigonometry/PreCalculus in the past, and a nice introduction for people who plan on learning more about the subject in the future.

Do not buy this book if you want a book to refer to for quick things like Trigonometric Identities or Unit Circle values. If you're a student taking Trigonometry this will probably just confuse you more than it will help you.Stick to your textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Entertaining Introduction to Beginning Trigonometry
Dr. Downing is a good writer and very entertaining. But beware, the content of this book is more appropriate to the trig we teach to high school geometry students. There is little here that would be helpful for our Honors (AP) Trigonometry students except as a highly entertaining way to review, perhaps during the month before school starts, what trigonometry they were supposed to learn in geometry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trig stories
This is a great resource for teachers who want to teach the difficult concept of trigonometry in a simple, steady fashion - through the use of story telling.

I like it over the textbook approach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text for diverse students
Underneath all of the special features, that are common to see in beginning math textbooks these days, one finds the essential kernel of a solid course in trigonometry in this text, as well as a nice review of college algebra.Naturally, the additional "stuff" provides a whole level of organization above the basic concepts, definitions and theorems of trigonometry. Thus, the wise student can tailor a course of study for her or his needs. This makes this textbook very suitable for classroom settings such as in community colleges in which one finds students with a diversity of learning styles.Although this makes learning trigonometry optimally easy for the student, this does not signify that the typical student would be wise to neglect working substantial numbers of problems. The text is especially rich in "word problems", which are the valuable types of problems to prepare one for courses such as physics, that involve applications of mathematics for which trigonometry is important. The level of rigor is suitable for beginning students. The question arises as well as to what extent a text like this would be a wise investment for a student who wishes to learn trigonometry by self-study.My personal view is that in a setting apart from teachers and tutors for guidance, this book would be too demanding for most beginning students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, methodical approach for the self-taught
I teach myself a lot from books. Some books provide little, some a lot. With this book you walk away with a usable knowledge of trigonometry AND invaluable knowledge of how your calculator performs mathematical operations.
I've tok trig in high school, but the subject wasn't presented in such an organized and methodical approach. The overview in Chapter 1 provided insights that eluded me in high school. Chapter 2 provided detailed knowledge of my pocket computer and knowledge of it's use to solve trig problems that I never realized before. The examples and solutions provide feedback that the lessons were learned and owned. The subsequent chapters methodically build consistent, solid, usable knowledge. Mr. Abbot continually enables you to compare table-based calculations with your calculator calculations, building your confidence in your ability to do both.IF you've wrestled with other approaches to learning trig, this is THE book to get you through it.
I have read Mr. Abbott's Calculus book and find his approach conducive to my learning.

1-0 out of 5 stars reader from texas
The book would ahve been good except before you even get into the material very good there are problems with wrong answers or very confusing explantions. If this much is wrong at the beginning what about later inthe book when you get into the stuff you don't know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clear discussion but book marred by lots of typos
This book is very well written and a lot of thought was given by theauthors as to the presentation of the material and how much background toassume the reader has. I would give the book five stars based on thewriting. However, the writers were not well served by the editor, as thereare many typos, maybe as many as one every other page. It appears that theproof reading was done by someone without a math background, as many of theerrors are obvious, such as an equal sign being omitted, turning anequality into a product. Or the length of the sides of a right trianglebeing given so that the hypotenuse is not the longest side. Sometimes theanswers to questions are messed up, which is very frustrating. Hopefullywhen the book is republished, it will be given the care it deserves. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Currently using this to prepare for calc
So far, so good. This is definitely an Algebra II book, which reprises with more sophistication the
real number system, polynomial arithmetic, radicals, exponents, graphing, functions, and linear equations
and solving systems of linear equations.

I haven't got to matrices or log, exponent, trig functions yet, or to prob/stat and sequences and series, but so far, I've worked through all the chapters before matrices, and it's working.

Each chapter has a few examples, then some "classroom exercises" (no answer key) and then "written exercises" (answer key to odd-numbered problems). The book format is condensed, so you won't have much room to write on the page. Each chapter gets down to business, and goes right to the material quickly.

There are plenty of applications in each chapter, too, for those interested in applied math.
I bought this book to prepare for Calculus (which I forgot since college). As a pre-calc primer, I believe
it has all I need:

a) intro to transcendental functions (exponents, logs, conic sections, trig)
b) solid intro to trig
c) sequences and series
d) matrix operations

Of course, it has a very solid review section of polynomial arithmetic operations, as well as quadratic equations.

Throughout the text, the authors emphasize the power of technology but provide numerous warnings of its limitations: they stress that only through understanding the mathematical concepts can students fully appreciate the power of graphing calculators and use technology appropriately.Additionally, the authors consistently use the same four-step process when introducing the different classes of functions. This allows students to easily make connections between graphs of functions and their associated equations and inequalities. ... Read more
