Selby If you need geometry and trigonometry as a tool for technical work … as a refresher course … or as a prerequisite for calculus, here’s a quick, efficient way for you to learn it! With this book, you can teach yourself the fundamentals of plane geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry … and learn how these topics relate to what you already know about algebra and what you’d like to know about calculus. You’ll work your way through geometry, numerical trigonometry, methods of trigonometric analysis, analytics, and limits—all the way up to the "front door" of calculus. Geometry and Trigonometry for Calculus is one of the Wiley Self-Teaching Guides. It’s been tested, rewritten, and retested until we’re sure you can teach yourself the concepts of geometry and trigonometry. And it’s programmed—so you work at your own pace. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book as a `running start'and refresher for college level math classes. The book was very easy to follow and, as a person who is NOT math savvy in any way, was never fustrated or confused.Thiswas a great book and recommend it to anyone. I would have bought the book new Vs used had I known there were so many opportunities to work the problems in the book. With the problems already worked out the challenge wasn't there BUT was found helpful when I was stuck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calculus prep - or Precalc review
This particular calculus study guide is clearly oriented for those whom are considering engineering or science related fields as business calculus will have less of a need of geometry and trigonometry. For those whom are interested in engineering/science fields and struggled a bit in geometry or trig, then this text can be a great support to have by your side during your precalc class OR for self-study/review after precalc and before calculus.

Indeed, there are several circumstances in which this self-study text can be used.

1) If you are in precalculus and struggling and wondering what parts are really important for calculus next year/semester.

2) If you took precalculus last year/semester and want a study guide (besides your old textbook) to get ready for Calculus.Indeed, for high school students this may be a great summer book to work through after precalc to assure you're ready for Calculus.

3) If you took precalc many years ago and want a refresher, or even if you took Calculus 1 many years ago and want to review the prerequisites prior to refreshing your calculus.

There is a final chapter on Limits which will be covered in the start of Calculus 1 and which can probably be skipped. There is a stronger emphasis on "focus" and "foci" than in many precalc books so this may make some students think, "Why didn't my teacher cover this?" Also, there's a trig table... just remember the book was originally published in 1975 and so a couple of emphases are now slightly different but overall the value of the text remains high as a supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ HERE FOR DETAILS
This book is excellent. I don't believe that I can find anything wrong with this book.

Some readers are saying that this book has too small of a font, or that the binding is loose, or that the book offers little in explanations to the awnsers for the practice problems. These are simply false. The font is a size twelve by most computer's standard font, if you can't see that small get glasses. If some books are falling apart stop throwing them or bending the spine. The explanation part is true in that the book doesn'tsay things like "the reason this is the awnser is..." However, I feel that the explanation of how geometry works and what it's rules are, is sufficient for the reader to analyse why the awnser is what it is. If you cannot do this it may be adviseable to bring the problem in question to a friend or teacher knowledgeable in geometry (I mean this in the kindest of manners).

Over all the book is clear and quick to the point. Some people may find it a bit dry in that there is no humor really or any stories, strictly instructional. Some may find it difficult to remember things this way or to read a book written in such a manner.

This book is written so that a reader who has no knowledge about geometry can understand it.

Overall a five star book and worth the price and then some.

(Please forgive anything mispelled I didn't have time to check this review.)

1-0 out of 5 stars good as a companion only
If you want to test your knowledge of geometry and trig after reading another text book, this is good. However, this is not a standalone book.It offers problems and answers, but very little in examples and explanations of why.

Unless you want a refresher, I'd go somwhere else, maybe a dummies or idiots guide instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars There aren't enough exercises..
The best and most enjoyable way to learn math is through practice, and although Peter H. Selby articulately explains the concepts presented in this book, there just aren't enough exercises for you to "teach yourself" the subject.A given section on plane geometry will give you about 15 abstract principles followed by 5 easy practice exercises.I have learned from this book, but in order to do so, I've had to make flashcards and do lots and lots of rereading to help me memorize the vocabulary and rules. This book would be okay for someone who just needs a quick refresher, but if you really want to learn the material, I would suggest buying separate 350-400 page books for each subject. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Trigonometry Book
Product was delivered when promised. Seller was very nice & kept lines of communication open. Book is exactly the way the seller described.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will be recommended that it be adopted for our course in precalculus
The college where I teach recently dropped a two-course sequence in precalculus in favor of a one-semester course. This of course requires the re-examination of the text to be used for precalculus and it is within that context that I examined this book.
I found it an excellent choice for a textbook for a one-semester class in precalculus. It begins with a quick review of graphs and functions, but then immediately goes to trigonometric functions. The subsequent chapters are:

*) Analytic trigonometry
*) Applications of trigonometric functions
*) Polar coordinates; vectors
*) Analytic geometry
*) Exponential and logarithmic functions

The coverage of these topics is thorough and plenty of exercises with solutions are included. I was also impressed by the use of coloration to catch and direct your attention through the explanations. This is a technique that is sometimes neglected in the development of mathematics texts. I will be recommending this book to the department chair for the text of choice for precalculus.

This text, written by best-selling developmental mathematics author Pat McKeague, features a more streamlined review of elementary algebra, allowing for earlier coverage of intermediate topics. An early introduction to graphing presents the foundation for a wide variety of graphing problems throughout the text. Early coverage of functions helps students feel comfortable with the many examples and graphs of functions that occur in later chapters. The first ten chapters of this book cove the topics usually found in a college-level algebra course. The last three chapters cover the essential topics from trigonometry. 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst math book you'll ever see
A very common agreement in my math class between students is how awful this book is. The book chooses to lead every section by 5-10 examples with a few sentences explaining what is going on. What the book fails to do for any topic is go into detail the logic and reasoning behind what we're doing. The book uses the idea that all we need to do is see HOW something is done to learn how it'll be done in a way the book doesn't show us. There are a ton of questions for the reviews and tests that were not even close to any of the examples in the books but yet we are supposed to know how to do things in a different way without ever being explained WHY things are how they are.

There are videos that come with the book but don't bother putting them on your computer. It's NOT video, it's one frame every 5-8 seconds while the audio streams so you INSTANTLY become confused when he's writing something on the board and it freezes.. but yet you hear him explaining further steps without ever seeing it on screen. It's not my computer, it's how they set up the cd.

No one in my class likes this book, I've done all my learning from web sites since chapter 2 because the book is absolutely not written by a math instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent book such as this one deserves praise. I read it, I got it, and I can teach it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book...
I read Analytic Trigonometry with Applications in conjunction with a similarly styled Algebra book. Barnett's writing is a bit dry but the book serves it's purpose...it allows you to learn Trigonometry without having to consult numerous sources outside of the book. You'll enjoy the positioning of the graphs on the pages and the fact that the author utilizes colors in a way that makes it easy to remember and apply key concepts. If you're interested in understanding the "whys" in addition to the "hows" of Trigonometry, then you'll also enjoy the author's analytic approach to the subject. While it's not perfect(as with virtually all math books, some of the examples require that the reader "fill in" missing steps)you can actually solve every problem in this book on your own.

You would be hard pressed to find a better Trigonometry book, I highly recommend it to college students preparing for Calculus.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book is for my Trigonometry class. I like the subject and the book is a great help to prepare for my exams

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized
Barnett's book is well organized and for those just getting into Trigonometry, you will appreciate the clarity of the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Compliment Great Class
The strength of this book is its organization. The reader is first introduced to the relation of arc length, radius, and angle. Then degrees and radians are learned. Then the unit circle is introduced. This is one of the best ways to learn trig.

The textbook presents the theory in a clear way that is easy to follow. If you were to read the chapter, you know enough to answer any of the problems. And if you were decided between texts, the layout of the problems of this text would be the reason to choose it. That is because of the science and real world applications of the problems. This is not "plug and chug." It is applying what was learned.

For me this book and the class in which it was used formed the foundation of all my latter math courses. This book has some pre-calculus problems, but that isn't its focus. Calculus has its advantages, but I always found trig to be more visual than most things in calculus. It is easier to picture what is actually going on in the math problem. But if you can relate your newly learned problem solving skills when approaching calculus problems, you will have no trouble.

One of my favorite problems in this book, which was included in the sixth edition on page 281, problem 71,is about an arched doorway. I don't know if the current versions have this problem. However it is worth researching. On my website (see my profile), I discuss this problem. And the excellent problems is what make this the best trig book I've seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Free Trigonometry Textbook
This is a very approachable and well presented introductory text on Trigonometry. It is written with a high school student in mind, but it can be used by anyone who is unfamiliar with this subject. It covers all the traditional topics in a trigonometry course - functions, triangles, angles, etc. The material is presented in a very straightforward manner and it is very easy to follow. There are multiple worked-out examples throughout the text, and each section ends with a several problems and their solutions. The problems vary in difficulty, and many are designed with practical applications in mind. The book also emphasizes the use of scientific calculator in working out of many problems, which is pedagogically a good approach. This book is available under the Creative Commons License through the CK-12 foundation, which means it can be reprinted, modified and resold if necessary.

The Kindle formatting of this textbook leaves something to be desired. The book was originally typeset in LaTeX, and this did not translate all that smoothly into the Kindle format. I've found that getting this textbook on other e-readers or computers in the epub format rendered it much more satisfactorily.

This is not the flashiest textbook that you will come across, but in my opinion it gets the job done.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent free Trigonometry textbook
The ck12.org foundation has made more than a dozen free math and science textbooks available, and this geometry textbook is one of them.

There are full images in this. This book is much larger than what is typically available for free. The images look good, but they are typically roughly two times too large at the moment. Also, all places where TeX is used, a too-large blocky image is used instead. For example, "(3,3)" is presented three times larger than the surrounding text. There are many of these on every page.In this particular ebook, it's inconsistently sized. For example, see location 4561-71.

Not all images seem to have made it.For example, on location 4513-28, three images are listed as "not available". Since this is a digital textbook, I'm sure those will be fixed. The errors above will also probably be addressed quickly.

Despite the above mentioned (and perhaps soon-fixed) flaws, this is worthwhile download. ... Read more

Thank you Destinybook for the speedy delivery of the math book.I received the book several days before my first calculus exam, which was very helpful in refreshing my memory on trigonometry. The math book was also in superb condition.Thank you again for excellent customer service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a review, of little value for learning.
If you have previously studied and largely understood algebra and trigonometry and just need a quick review, then this book is right for you. However, if you haven't studied these topics or didn't understand them the first time, then it will be of little value. The coverage is thorough in breadth, starting with the basics of adding and subtracting all types of numbers through logarithms, exponential functions and trigonometry. Only a few pages are devoted to each topic with exercises at the end of each section. Solutions to some of the exercises are given at the end, although in my opinion there should have been more.
While the explanations are short, to the extent that it is possible in a small number of pages, they are through in depth. In a section that I found interesting, the dy/dx notation for a derivative is used. However, knowledge of calculus is not required, the reader is simply being asked to algebraically solve for dy/dx rather than use any knowledge of what it represents. Used in the manner for which it was intended this book is an effective tool in the study of precalculus material. Note: This book is nearly identical to the companion book, "Just-In-Time: Algebra & Trigonometry for Calculus." It would be a waste of money to buy both.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great solid math book
I've been looking for a solid algebra 2 book.I first tried some of the more modern textbooks that have been published in the last few years, but was disappointed.I finally found this book and a couple of others published around the same time period.Although, all three were significantly better than the modern books, I thought this one was the best.

Mary P. has done it again. I'm a homeschooling Dad with degrees in computer science and mathematics. My dad is a high school math teacher of 30 years experience. Neither of us has ever seen a better treatment for high school of this subject. My daughter was confused by Saxon's methods and explanations, went over to the Dolciani book, and says "Oh, that's how you do it!". Also a more rigorous and in depth treatment than Abeka's Algebra 2. My only complaint/wish was that the computer programming aspects of the exercises were done for C rather than Basic or Pascal, but that's easily fixed by anyone that knows C. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It explains some really well and some not so much or at all.
Most of the time it is very helpful to see how the problems are worked out. Not very often, but occasionally there are some problems that are now worked out at all. Answers are given in the back of the text book but the solutions manual does not even give that. If you are struggling it is definitely worth it though. ... Read more

Product Description

The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth is the first major history in English of the origins and early development of trigonometry. Glen Van Brummelen identifies the earliest known trigonometric precursors in ancient Egypt, Babylon, and Greece, and he examines the revolutionary discoveries of Hipparchus, the Greek astronomer believed to have been the first to make systematic use of trigonometry in the second century BC while studying the motions of the stars. The book traces trigonometry's development into a full-fledged mathematical discipline in India and Islam; explores its applications to such areas as geography and seafaring navigation in the European Middle Ages and Renaissance; and shows how trigonometry retained its ancient roots at the same time that it became an important part of the foundation of modern mathematics.

The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth looks at the controversies as well, including disputes over whether Hipparchus was indeed the father of trigonometry, whether Indian trigonometry is original or derived from the Greeks, and the extent to which Western science is indebted to Islamic trigonometry and astronomy. The book also features extended excerpts of translations of original texts, and detailed yet accessible explanations of the mathematics in them.

No other book on trigonometry offers the historical breadth, analytical depth, and coverage of non-Western mathematics that readers will find in The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Book on Ancient Mathematics
The mathematics presented in this book spans the period from ancient times up to 1550. The author discusses the progress in mathematical development, chronologically throughout this period, starting in Egypt and Babylon, then on through Greece, India and Islamic countries, to finally end in Europe. The main focus is the development of trigonometry for use principally in astronomy but also in earth-related matters. Since this is mainly a reference book, the author pulls no mathematical punches. Throughout the book, mathematical discussions are interspersed with very brief historical snippets; these give the subject an always-popular human flavor. In order to provide the reader with a better appreciation for the mathematics of the distant past, the author has retained the techniques used at the time, including the use of the sexagesimal (base 60) number system where applicable. As a result, a reader who has been trained in modern mathematical techniques will need to get used to these ancient ways, especially if his/her objective is to follow, in detail, the mathematical arguments presented. Fortunately, the author provides modern "Explanations" after each ancient digression that has been translated from the ancient texts. The writing style is both authoritative and clear - certainly what one would hope for in any reference/textbook. Those taking university courses on ancient mathematics, as well as the most serious of math buffs, are likely to be the ones who will appreciate this book the most. ... Read more

This revision of a best-selling plane trigonometry text for freshmen and sophomores maintains the trademarks of clear, concise exposition coupled with graded problems. The result is a fresh and modern version of a classic text. Major changes include an emphasis on the use of calculators and calculator-related exercises, the use of radian measures appearing after Chapter 5 to help prepare students for analytic geometry or calculus, the expansion of Chapter 9 to include more applications as well as the addition of polar, exponential functions, and a greater emphasis on graphing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn traditional trig methods
This book was my trig book in College. The instructor, Bill Litzmann, was famous for shunning the use of calculators and required that we work every problem with "a #2 pencil and a legal pad," just like he did. This seemed unfair at the time, but in the long run it's a good idea. That said, this book actually teaches BOTH ways of thinking about trig. It teaches a solid foundation in understanding and working trig problems without a calculator and it also has sections on how to use a calculator to solve problems. It even includes memes for memorizing things like the Sin and Cos of angles by radians. In short, I recommend learning to do trig without a calculator and using this book to do so. Especially if you plan to into multivariable calculus or upper level physics where trig is used constantly, especially in coordinate transformations and rotations. ... Read more

Product Description
1, Introduction. The word trigonometry is derived from the two Greek words for triangle (rptyuvov) and measurement (jxcTpta). Originally trigonometry was concerned chiefly with the solution of triangles. At present this is but one part of the subject.
Certain preliminary considerations, concerning directed lines and angles, are necessary before introducing the fundamental definitions of trigonometry.
RECTANGULAR COORDINATES
2. Directed lines. A positive and a negative direction may be assigned arbitrarily to every line.
If the direction from A to C is positive, the opposite direction from C to A is negative.
If we let the order of the let- _^
ters indicate the direction in A c
which a segment is measured, it is evident that AC and CA represent the same segment measured in opposite directions; hence
AC^-CA or -AC= CA.
Also, if B be a third point on the line, the segments AB and BA are opposite in sign; likewise the segments BC and CB. Hence
AB=~BA or - AB = BA, and BC=

Product Description
David Cohen's PRECALCULUS, WITH UNIT-CIRCLE TRIGONOMETRY, Fourth Edition, focuses on teaching mathematics, using a graphical perspective throughout to provide a visual understanding of college algebra and trigonometry. The author is known for his clear writing style and the numerous quality exercises and applications he includes in his respected texts. In this new edition, graphs, visualization of data, and functions are now introduced much earlier and receive greater emphasis. Many sections now contain more examples and exercises involving applications and real-life data. While this edition takes the existence of the graphing calculator for granted, the material is arranged so that one can teach the course with as much or as little graphing utility work as he/she wishes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Condition
Came in the mail quite quickly and is in very good condition. No tears, scratches or anything. just a few pencil marks on a few pages. Definitely not complaining considering how much money this saved me! (:

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Textbook
To be honest, I am very frustrated with this book.My biggest complaint about it is that the examples that are worked out (not explained mind you) often times have no connection to the homework problems. In fact the homework problems are always much more difficult, so the textbook doesn't prepare you for what you need to know.It is beyond me how the author thinks we can solve the homework problems, if he fails to show how they are approached in the first place. This author has no business writing textbooks and I haven't a clue why my college went with the book in the first place.

3-0 out of 5 stars Author could do better
I used this textbook for a trigonometry class. In many of the chapters, the author hardly explained many steps in how to do problems and leaves out important key examples and topics needed to do the homework problems. When the author actually does explain the examples, he gives only either the easiest examples possible or unrelated examples. What I dislike the most is that this author only gives practice problems that do not reinforce topics needed to do the homework problems.
