Product Description
This is a reprint of one of the standard basic college textbooks in Calculus and Analytic Geometry. It is here divided into two volumes. The first volume starts slowly, explaining basic concepts from algebra and geometry including lines, slopes, and curves. The second volume, which starts with Chapter X, reaches integration, differentiation, partial differentiation, Taylor's Series and the really hard stuff. There will be a few advanced students who may be able to skip the first volume entirely and start directly with Volume Two.Thus, in one two volume work, everything about Calculus is covered. Learn everything in this book, and you will not need to study calculus any more.In addition, Volume One could be used as an advanced high school textbook, as it starts with middle level algebra, geometry and trigonometry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars understanding calculus concepts
I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. The underlying conceptsof calculus are explained very clearly.Forget about the cat stuff.. it is irrelevant, notdistracting.. but strange. The rest of the book is great though. Understand.. this is not a math book and will not dothe work for you. Whatit does is explain in non mathematical terms, what your math teacher is trying to explain using the opaque language required of mathematicians. read this before math class, then review applicable parts during math class and you will surely benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars What is Calculus???
I have done physics, statics, strength of materials, and basic circuit analysis all at the algebra level because I never knew what calculus was. This book explains what calculus is without doing the math. After reading this book I read "Who is Fourier" by College of Lex and "Calculus The Easy Way" by Douglas Downing. And finally learn what Calculus is.

3-0 out of 5 stars The cats have succeeded
According to the authors, cats want to keep people confused about calculus, and I think that cats helped to write this book. Actually, I have been reading a lot of math and science concept books, trying to find any that really clarify the ideas, processes, and applications; technique is best learned with a good textbook. I did not find the analogies in Calculus for Cats to be particularly engaging or enlightening, but this short book does act as a primer of sorts. I would have enjoyed this book more if the authors had focused on interesting real-world examples rather than on mouse-catching examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Learn what your cat is really up to.
The authors make an analogy between what they are trying to accomplish in this book, with an English teacher who first lets his students hear a poem read, before analyzing it technically. This analogy holds up to a point, but not completely. In some ways, the conceptual, no pain approach to calculus presented here is more like an English teacher reading an English languge poem to a bunch of students who can't understand English.

The language of math is still, and always will be numbers.I was left wondering about too may concepts because the real work, the math, was left out in many instances. After reading this book, I went through a more mathematically oriented book oncalculus, suffered with the number crunching, and came to a better understanding of the calculus. No pain, no gain is true in this case.

I also didn't like the way the book was organized with all the chapters running together. More section breaks would have helped.

On the up side, the authors had a difficult job, and did an admirable job.I did indeed come away learning something.Part of the problem I had with this book was probably that I wasn't using it as a supplement to a normal calculus textbook in a normal calc course, but rather was using it for self-study on its own.If you are currently enrolled in a calc course or have previously taken the subject, you might feel better about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps me keep up with my son!
In my continuing quest to always be the source of all information for my son, Calculus For Cats has saved me! As his math skills continued, I was starting to pay for sleeping through Calculus in High School. But Ken Amdahl saved me. This is a perfect book for anyone wanting to learn the concepts of Calculus ... even if you hate math and cats!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I used this book for two semesters and it was great! The book gives examples and explanations. The best thing is that I can sell it after the year ended! The professors rarely change the books for math, so i was able to sell if for almost what i purchased it for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Two good books, less than the sum of the parts
While I teach a course in finite mathematics and received this book for consideration as a textbook, I will not be adopting it. The course is finite mathematics only and the calculus portions of the books are unsuitable for the class. My personal opinion is that it is a mistake to combine finite mathematics and calculus into a single class. The two topics are so distinct that melding them in a single class is inappropriate.
The finite mathematics portion of the book takes up the first 523 pages and calculus the remaining 540 pages. The coverage in the finite mathematics section is standard fare and the chapter headings are as follows:

*) Functions
*) Mathematics of finance
*) Systems of equations and matrices
*) Linear programming
*) Statistics
*) Markov chains

The coverage in the applied calculus section is also standard and the chapter headings are as follows:

*) Derivatives and their uses
*) Further applications of derivatives
*) Exponential and logarithmic functions
*) Integration and its applications
*) Integration techniques and differential equations
*) Calculus of several variables

Two additional chapters that are available on the web are:

*) Game theory
*) Logic

I cover logic in my course in finite mathematics, so I strongly disagree with the decision to shunt it off to the web.
The explanations are within the bounds of most students, although it is clear that this is a text for more advanced students as calculus is not a part of finite mathematics. There are plenty of exercises and solutions to the odd numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
In my opinion, it is two books, suitable only for situations where there is a sequence of finite mathematics followed by applied calculus. If only one of the courses is being taught, then the other half of the book is rendered superfluous at best and an expensive hindrance at worst. The cost of textbooks is soaring and there is no reason to force students to purchase more than they really have to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I use this text in my college-level math review course and find it to be an excellent reference. As an earlier reviewer noted, it does not go into great detail on any of the subjects, but that was not the intent of the text. It is intended as a listing of "just the essentials" and should be used only as a reference, not as primary instruction. For its intended purpose, I find it invaluable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended.
This study guide didn't match up well with my Precalculus texts, or lectures, and I found it to be useless.Very little information is presented on each topic, and worse, topics seem to be haphazardly picked for inclusion. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An average book.
I got this book last summer to prepare for next school year (I registered for Honors Precal-Trig). When I got this book, I was rather disappointed. When I look at the book after I finish the course, the book covers what looks more like Algebra 2, and problems are not explained.
If you are having hard time in math, and want easy problems to do, you may want this book. But if you're pretty good, and think using this as a reference throughout the course, then don't get this book. ... Read more

Product Description

Malliavin calculus provides an infinite-dimensional differential

calculus in the context of continuous paths stochastic processes.

The calculus includes formulae of integration by parts and Sobolev

spaces of differentiable functions defined on a probability space.

This new book, demonstrating the relevance of Malliavin calculus for

Mathematical Finance, starts with an exposition from scratch of

this theory.

Greeks (price sensitivities) are reinterpreted in terms of Malliavin

calculus.

Integration by parts formulae provide stable Monte Carlo schemes for

numerical valuation of digital options.

Finite-dimensional projections of infinite-dimensional Sobolev spaces

lead to Monte Carlo computations of conditional expectations useful

for computing American options.

Weak convergence of numerical integration of SDE is interpreted

as a functional belonging to a Sobolev space of negative order.

Insider information is expressed as an infinite-dimensional drift.

The last chapter gives an introduction to the same objects

in the context of jump processes where incomplete markets appear.
