Product Description

This book provides an introduction to the scientific fundamentals of groundwater and geothermal systems. In a simple and didactic manner the different water and energy problems existing in deformable porous rocks are explained as well as the corresponding theories and the mathematical and numerical tools that lead to modeling and solving them. This approach provides the reader with a thorough understanding of the basic physical laws of thermoporoelastic rocks, the partial differential equations representing these laws and the principal numerical methods, which allow finding approximate solutions of the corresponding mathematical models. The book also presents the form in which specific useful models can be generated and solved. The text is introductory in the sense that it explains basic themes of the systems mentioned in three areas: engineering, physics and mathematics. All the laws and equations introduced in this book are formulated carefully based on fundamental physical principles. This way, the reader will understand the key importance of mathematics applied to all the subjects. Simple models are emphasized and solved with numerous examples. For more sophisticated and advanced models the numerical techniques are described and developed carefully.
This book will serve as a synoptic compendium of the fundamentals of fluid, solute and heat transport, applicable to all types of subsurface systems, ranging from shallow aquifers down to deep geothermal reservoirs.
The book will prove to be a useful textbook to senior undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduates, professional geologists and geophysicists, engineers, mathematicians and others working in the vital areas of groundwater and geothermal resources.

Product Description
Numbers are integral to our everyday lives and factor into almost everything we do. In this Very Short Introduction, Peter M. Higgins, a renowned popular-science writer, unravels the world of numbers, demonstrating its richness and providing an overview of all the number types that feature in modern science and mathematics. Indeed, Higgins paints a crystal-clear picture of the number world, showing how the modern number system matured over many centuries, and introducing key concepts such as integers, fractions, real and imaginary numbers, and complex numbers. Higgins sheds light on such fascinating topics as the series of primes, describing how primes are now used to encrypt confidential data on the internet. He also explores the infinite nature of number collections and explains how the so-called real numbers knit together to form the continuum of the number line. Written in the fashion of Higgins' highly popular science paperbacks, Numbers accurately explains the nature of numbers and how so-called complex numbers and number systems are used in calculations that arise in real problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Elucidates the Forgotten History behindMathematical Numbers
This book is great for anyone interested in the human history of our counting numbers.Every aspect of global cultural numbers is covered in this awesome book. From the dawn of the human race to the brillant Renaissanse mathematicans and Asian use of spoken nuncupative numbers, this book explains every meaning behind the development of number language systems. There are excellent foreign phrases and words about numbers explained here. We're the only animated being on the planet that records, measures and quantifies units. This is the best tome on why and how all the ancient cultures developed their own unique number symbols and how they evolved, merged or became extinct. If you're a modern numerator who always wondered about the historical meanings and progress of numbers, this book has a jillion examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Number Mystery
Because numbers have both a physical reference and a spiritual mystery, they are fascinating. This book helps me understand the meaning of number both historically and currently.

4-0 out of 5 stars A no frills, no fluffy bunny explanation of number theory
If you have a serious interest the theories and cultural symbolism of numbers, this is a solid and still accurate resource.Though originally published in 1969, this book is a well-researched and clear overview of the ideas and concepts behind numerology and number symbolism.Unlike most stuff published today, this books isn't some "solve all your problems with numbers!" collection of nonsense, but an insightful outlook on the origins of number symbolism.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit stilted and dense, but fascinating nevertheless
Number Words and Number Symbols is a translation of a work originally in German, and it shows. While the discussions of the origins of various cultures and languages' symbols and words for numbers is almost encylopedicin its completion, it can be very stilted reading at times.

If you don'tmind sometimes long and verbose reading, then this is certainly one of thebest works on the subject out there.I would quibble that Menninger givesthe East less coverage than the West, but his comparisons of number wordsacross Indo-European languages is simply fascinating. Also, too are histheories about how the displacement of one language by another in a regioncan often lead to weird anomalies in number counting.

Product Description
In THE BOOK OF NUMBERS, two famous mathematicians fascinated by beautiful and intriguing number patterns share their insights and discoveries with each other and with readers. John Conway is the showman, master of mathematical games and flamboyant presentations; Richard Guy is the encyclopedist, always on top of problems waiting to be solved. Together they show us why patterns and properties of numbers have captivated mathematicians and non-mathematicians alike for centuries. THE BOOK OF NUMBERS features Conway and Guy's favorite stories about all the kinds of numbers any of us is likely to encounter, and many others besides. "Our aim," the authors write, "is to bring to the inquisitive reader. . .an explanation of the many ways the word 'number' is used." They explore patterns that emerge in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, describe these pattern' relevance both inside and outside mathematics, and introduce the strange worlds of complex, transcendental, and surreal numbers. This unique book brings together facts, pictures and stories about numbers in a way that no one but an extraordinarily talented pair of mathematician/writers could do.Amazon.com Review
The Book of Numbers lets readers of all levels ofmathematical sophistication (or lack thereof) understand the origins, patterns, and interrelationships of different numbers. Whether it is avisualization of the Catalan numbers or an explanation of how theFibonacci numbers occur in nature, there is something in here todelight everyone. The diagrams and pictures, many of which are incolor, make this book particularly appealing and fun. A few of thediscussions may be confusing to those who are not adeptmathematicians; those who are may be irked that certain facts arementioned without an accompanying proof. Nonetheless, The Book ofNumbers will succeed in infecting any reader with an enthusiasmfor numbers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting introduction to numbers
Fascinating overview of the many different types of numbers. It made me think, like a book of puzzles.I really like the geometrical interpretations in the early chapters.Unfortunately, the book suffers from too many typos.I also found the discussion on surreal numbers hackenbush, nim, and the infinities rushed and unclear, and the ending too abrupt. It seems the authors, having worked directly on those topics for many years, thought the material in this last chapter is obvious and needs little explanation.I would love to see an updated edition with expanded material covering the more difficult topics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusion! Poor Editing
Horrible - the beginning of Chapter 2 is a prime example of confusion both textually and graphically. Defintately would NOT recommend unless you already know the stuff well enough to overcome the above limitations! But then, what's the point of buying?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of Pure Enjoyment
I own a lot of books on Mathematics and Mathematical topics. This book truly is my favorite. The color illustrations, the other drawings and diagrams make the topics very understandable and tantalizing. The section on infinite and infinitesimal numbers alone, has inspired me to submit a paper on this subject to a Mathematics Journal. This book will cause anyone who is not already a Mathphile, to quikly become one. Take a look at the middle numbers in Pascals Triangle....with a little manipulation of this sequence, you produce CATALAN NUMBERS, which further leads to a number of interesting problems with Friezes and Polygons, none of which are mind bending in their demand of your mental powers. The chapters are all short, and you can open the book at random and find something very nice to dine on. BUY THIS ONE!Dr.Pratt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavier than I thought
I enjoyed reading this book very much. But I do not agree with the reviewers who say it does not require more than a highschool level in mathematics.
I have an M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering, so I can safely say I have a good knowlegde of mathematics, but still there were parts I didn't completely understand.
Maybe we don't have to understand it all at once, maybe this level is needed to keep it interesting. And interesting it was, right up to the last page. And after reading the last page, I would have loved to read more like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascination with Numbers
This is a marvelous book written by two very distinquished mathematicians with a knack for teaching and fascinating their readers."The Book of Numbers" is a romantic text - Conway and Guy are truly in love with the subject and their passion is truly contagious. Enter, "The Book of Numbers" and plan on staying a while - not bceasue it is a difficult read but becasue you will have no desire to checkout. Truly enjoyable.

Product Description

This book deals with several aspects of what is now called "explicit number theory." The central theme is the solution of Diophantine equations, i.e., equations or systems of polynomial equations which must be solved in integers, rational numbers or more generally in algebraic numbers. This theme, in particular, is the central motivation for the modern theory of arithmetic algebraic geometry. In this text, this is considered through three of its most basic aspects. The local aspect, global aspect, and the third aspect is the theory of zeta and L-functions. This last aspect can be considered as a unifying theme for the whole subject.

Product Description
Number is an eloquent, accessible tour de force that reveals how the concept of number evolved from prehistoric times through the twentieth century.Tobias Dantzig shows that the development of math—from the invention of counting to the discovery of infinity—is a profoundly human story that progressed by "trying and erring, by groping and stumbling." He shows how commerce, war, and religion led to advances in math, and he recounts the stories of individuals whose breakthroughs expanded the concept of number and created the mathematics that we know today. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Feast For The Mind
The history and progression of numbers. Quite an unexpected look into the multidimensional evolution and life of numbers. From the typos of the scribes, to the beauty and elegance of numeric perfection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Numbers History
If you want to know about the history of numbers, this is the book for you!I am finding it a little dry but interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars An inferior edition
This is a reprint of the author's 1954 fourth edition sandwiched between a new Foreword and Afterword.Neither the editor (Joseph Mazur) nor his brother (Barry Mazur, who wrote the Foreword) nor either of the advertised reviewers (Mario Livio or Charles Seife) apparently actually proofread the text as there are a distressing number of readily apparent typographic errors in the printing, both in the text and figures.
For a volume trumpeted on its title page as "The MASTERPIECE SCIENCE Edition" the many errors belie that mantle. In addition, the Afterword, which attempts to bring the reader up to date on relevant mathematical developments that occured after the fourth edition, fails to mention "undecidability" and the immense impact it has had on the issues discussed in the chapter entitled "The Anatomy of the Infinite."

Dantzig's Number continues to be accessible and generally insightful, but it is a shame that no one at Plume Books took due care and responsibility for its production.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accessible yet comprehensive
I hope the few number of reviews for this title is not indicative of its popularity. This accessible, yet deep, book is delightful to read and thought-provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of the 4th revised edition (not the new 2007 edition)
I am a mathematics teacher and have used this book as either a required reading or suggested supplement for a variety of courses, including math history for liberal arts students, number theory for mathematics majors, etc.

The book (4th edition) is divided into Part I and Part II -- the latter comprising only the last 4th of the book.Any successful college student will find Part I informative, and at times wonderfully enlightening about the development of the concepts of number and measurement. This book was written for the armchair reader, so expect a reader-friendly style of writing. However, I have found that Part II can be quite challenging for liberal arts students -- and quite stimulating to those whose studies included a more rigorous tour of mathematics.Do not let this bother you!I think Part I is worth the price of the book on its own.

If you wish to learn more about the history of mathematics and mathematicians, you might wish to examine Notable Mathematicians: From Ancient Times to the Present edited by Robyn V. Young and Zoran Minderovic.

Product Description

Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control presents and develops an extensive treatment of stability analysis and control design of nonlinear dynamical systems, with an emphasis on Lyapunov-based methods. Dynamical system theory lies at the heart of mathematical sciences and engineering. The application of dynamical systems has crossed interdisciplinary boundaries from chemistry to biochemistry to chemical kinetics, from medicine to biology to population genetics, from economics to sociology to psychology, and from physics to mechanics to engineering. The increasingly complex nature of engineering systems requiring feedback control to obtain a desired system behavior also gives rise to dynamical systems.

Wassim Haddad and VijaySekhar Chellaboina provide an exhaustive treatment of nonlinear systems theory and control using the highest standards of exposition and rigor. This graduate-level textbook goes well beyond standard treatments by developing Lyapunov stability theory, partial stability, boundedness, input-to-state stability, input-output stability, finite-time stability, semistability, stability of sets and periodic orbits, and stability theorems via vector Lyapunov functions. A complete and thorough treatment of dissipativity theory, absolute stability theory, stability of feedback systems, optimal control, disturbance rejection control, and robust control for nonlinear dynamical systems is also given. This book is an indispensable resource for applied mathematicians, dynamical systems theorists, control theorists, and engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book
I think, this is a must-have for graduate students who want to research in the area of nonlinear dynamical systems and control. It covers plenty of topics in the area, but, I need to say that this book is mainly about analysis part of nonlinear system, not control of nonlinear system. So, if you want to learn much more about nonlinear control, then you may consider Sastry's book or a more applied one, Slotine's book. Prof. Haddad uses this book as the text book of his Aerospace Nonlinear Control class in Georgia Tech and he teaches too much things that is not covered in the book. One more thing, there are a few typos and errors in the book, so before reading to it, it is better to download the errata from Prof. Haddad's homepage.

It is just an excellent book. It is the best in its area. I strongly suggest this book to any control scientist and engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece

This is a monumental work. If you're dealing with dynamical systems this is a must. Of course, it's full of maths but this is not a book intended for the beginner.
