An excellent review for the person where algebra is still reasonably fresh in their mind
While this book will be of little value if you need to learn or significantly re-learn basic algebra, it is an excellent resource if you simply need a refresher to prepare for a competency or placement exam. The coverage is complete though concise; a topic is introduced in as few words as possible and the examples as few as needed. If you have gone through the subject with understanding, then the examples will be sufficient. However, if you are weak in a topic, then the examples will be insufficient, although you will learn that you need to explore the subject in more depth.

Concise Review
This book is stripped down and to the point.All the information you need to do a thorough review without all the fluff.I would have rated it a "5" if it had more "Test Yourself" questions -- but, that's a personal preference (don't let it stop you from buying the book).

This book is improperly organized - concepts in mathematics must be understood from the easiest level to the most difficult - this book presents the material for memorization, NOT understanding. This is the first time that I encounter math organized in such a way. While everything is explained well enough, the lumping together of too much information for difficult concepts makes it difficult to learn properly. Try McKeague instead, same title, just a much better book.

I emailed them and notified them about the cancellation of my order, and they never responded or gave me feedback on my email.

Lacks Critical Steps For Problem Solving.
Beginning & Intermediate Algebra (Fourth Edition) by Elayn Martin-Gay is not a well written textbook because it lacks a clear explanation on how algebraic problems are solved, and it does not follow a very methodical manner.Many of the examples lack important steps that are critical in reinforcing the learning process.Whereas some textbooks will show the steps completely, such as Understanding Elementary Algebra and Understanding Intermediate Algebra by Goodman and Hirsch.Secondly, this textbook cost $125.00 which includes a CD ROM (Test Prep Video) and a "MyMathLab" online tutorial kit that requires registration and cost about $[...] which brings a total of $[...]. Finally, students are better off purchasing an algebra textbook that contains precise and easily understood algebraic problems.

A Little Too Late!
Why wasn't Saxon Math around when I was young? I have used several levels of Saxon.All levels are great.Saxon takes the fear out of math by explaining the most complex information in an easy to understand manner.There is also constant review so that concepts go into long term memory rather than allowing the student to forget.

not-so-good
This algebra I book is currently being used in my daughter's 9th grade class.The book is very sturdy and will take alot of beating, so no problem with falling apart or anything.However, I give this book only two stars because it does a not-so-good job of explaining many concepts in "detail" for a beginning algebra student.There is indeed an answer key in the back of the book for odd numbered problems, but this answer key does NOT work the problem(s) out step-by-step so that students may see how the book's writer got the final correct answer. If one purchases this book, please make sure they have a good teacher who will explain in detail, because, unfortunately, the book does not go into detail as it should.I am currently looking for a substitute algebra I book that does a better job of explaining concepts.If it were not for the fact that our family has advanced degrees ourselves, so that we can explain the algebra concepts, I think my daughter might be needing a private tutor.I would recommend that folks pass this book and try something with good explanations and buy the ANSWER BOOK that goes with it.

Arrived on schedule and in great condition.With a solid math background, this item is helpful at homework time.We wish we'd have purchased a similar product in years past rather than an item that detailed each problem's solution in a step-by-step process!

Incomplete and probably not needed
WARNING - Saxon's Algebra is a great course but this is not 'it' - please read below.

This is NOT what it's known as the HOME STUDY KIT - made up of:

1 - The Algebra 1 student's textbook that includes the 120 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
2 - Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
3 - Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there.

You only get #3 if you order this item, meaning that you will NOT be able to teach your students Algebra. Moreover, there is no value in purchasing this booklet as it is always included with the Home Study Kit and you will not need more than one, no matter how many students you have since this is for instructor's use, not student's.

I love Saxon and I've been using Saxon courses for many years with my children but you should look for the Home Study Kit or any other offer that includes the 3 items I listed above.

I am including my review of the Home Study Kit as a way to help those interested with purchases what is actually needed to successfully teach Algebra 1.

BRIEF EVALUATION OF THE COMPLETE STUDY KIT

Like previous courses in the Saxon's series, Algebra 1 is a most effective tool for teaching children math without intimidating them and without boring them. After more than 6 years of teaching my own kids math after school I can testify that it works. Both my kids are now in advanced math classes, their math grades always A's and, as I explain below, we just skipped Algebra 1/2 as not necessary.



ALGEBRA 1/2 vs. ALGEBRA 1

I found Algebra 1 to be the logical 'next' for my kids who successfully covered Saxon's Math 8/7 the year before. We decided to skip Algebra 1/2 because it was more or less a re-review of the material in 8/7, presumably to ensure a solid math foundation prior to moving into the more abstract 'true' algebra covered by this text.

I would suggest taking Algebra 1 ans skipping Algebra 1/2 if your students have mastered Math 8/7. Otherwise, go with Algebra 1.



THE SAXON METHOD

We've been using Saxon's books to teach our kids math starting with Math 3/2 and we've been very happy.

Algebra 1 is comprised of 120 lessons, 31 tests, one extra topic on real number, Glossary, Index and answers to the odd-numbered questions. Unlike the previous Math courses, there are no 'Investigations' and the lessons no longer begin with drills and warmup activities. Also, unlike prior math cycles up to Math 8/7, tests are administered after every four lesson rather than after every five.

Each lesson begins by explaining and illustrating a number of new topics - rarely one, usually two or three, sometimes more. That is followed by a small number of practice exercises that are related to the new topics. Finally, there is a 30-item problem set (what the prior volumes were calling 'mixed practice') that asks students to answer/solve 30 questions that could be on EVERYTHING covered by Saxon up to that point. Each individual question has references to the lesson(s) which the students may want to review if they are having trouble with the answer/solution.

After every 4 lessons there is a 20-question test.

The problem set and the multi-topic lessons are what makes the Saxon method so effective as new concepts are introduced incrementally and each problem set keeps revisiting prior topics and many of the problems require the student to combine skills and knowledge acquired in more than one lesson.



THE KIT's CONTENTS

A complete, usable kit should include the following:

- The Algebra 1 student's textbook that includes the 120 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
- Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
- Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there.

If you are not comfortable with the topic, you MAY want to order the optional 'Solutions manual' and, perhaps the Teacher's manual. I have no experience with these items.



PRACTICAL ADVICE

You should be very careful on what you get in your order. The 3 items above are what is usually called 'The Home Study Kit'. This is sufficient for teaching math. Please be aware that you will not be able to teach math effectively unless you have all 3 times above. Before you actually place your order, you should contact the seller and make sure that this is what you get.

I found the DIVE into Math CD for Saxon Algebra 1, 3rd edition to be a very useful addition. In fact this is what I am using this year and both the kids and myself are happier for it. You may be able to find kits that sell the CD separately or as part of a bundle. You will not be able to teach with the CD alone because you will be missing the practice problems and the tests so consider buying the CD by itself if you already have the 'study kit' or look for some bundle that has both the study kit and the CD. One CD for your 'class' should be sufficient so, if you have more than one student, buy as many kits as you need for the students and only one CD for teaching.

saxon algebra 1
This product is so poorly conceived. There are not enough reinforcing problems so that students retain the algebra concepts and can test out of high school classes. We are almost halfway through the year and have not even started polynomial factoring, a basic concept in algebra 1. A decent book...
Overall, I really like this book. The writing is very clear and there are lots of graphs, illustrations and examples that makes it an excellent purchase for visual learners like me. Compared to most contemporary texts on this subject, the 3rd edition of College Algebra by Beecher, Penna and Bittinger is the best book on the market . However, it's not without flaws.

The author's could have explained polynomial long division in greater detail, and the section on partial fractions could've been better. Specifically, I would have liked to see verbal explanations in the margins on how to carry out long division, and on how to construct partial fractions from a rational expression whose denominator contains repeating linear or quadratic factors. Also, some of the examples in the first section on matrices were unnecessarily long and, at times, difficult to follow. For these reasons I consider this a good(but not a great) text for self-leaners. A great math book will NEVER force you to look up explanations on the internet.

Nevertheless, I benefited from the overall organization and clarity of this book, as well as the multitude of excercises/problems sets at the end of each section. Hence, I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

Why so many pictures?
First of all, I was amazed by the number of pictures in the book! Made me think I was reading Time or Newsweek in bed. Unfortunately, all those colors and pictures put me in the same frame of mind. Very distracting.

Secondly, I found the style and approach rather mechanical. I am returning to Maths after many years, just as a hobby, but was a little surprised and disappointed by the "style change" in mathematics textbooks. But then, I am no expert. The exercises, I felt, were rather poor and uninspiring, making up in quantity what they lacked in quality. I had to turn to older books to find interesting problems to work on.

Also annoying were the numerous advertisements masquerading as "study tips" that the publishers inserted in various places.

Otherwise, a satisfactory book, better than many similar ones.

fit for purpose
I bought this book so my daughter could keep one at the sitter's house so she didn't have to carry it in her backpack.The condition in which it arrived was poorer than how it had been listed.I contacted Amazon and the seller and they were very gracious and worked with me to make sure I was happy with the transaction.I highly recommend using this process for buying used books!

Fabulous Algebra 1 book for students, teachers, and tutors
First off, I am a tutor to many Algebra 1 students, including some who take algebra with me for h.s. credit in lieu of taking it at school. I am very familiar w/myriad algebra texts.

This book is a jazzier version of the 1994 publishing by Stanley Smith under the Addison Wesley label (owned by the same publishing house as Prentice Hall).I wrote in my review of the 1994 book that my only suggestion would be to take out Chapters 14 & 15 on probability and trig, as they don't really belong in an Alg 1 book.Coincidentally, this book has done exactly that. Hooray!

The font, colors, typography, and imagery are more eye-catching than the bland 1994 book, and there are fewer problems of the purely "drill, drill" variety.They've replaced some of those problems with more challenging application problems toward the end of each assignment, but there are still sufficient problems for assigning many practice & drill problems.In fact, most of the problems are exactly the same as in the 1994 text.

Overall, it's a nice improvement over the older text.They made it more visually and otherwise interesting *without* sacrificing content, as so many algebra texts do. This alone sets it apart from the majority of US-published algebra texts out there. (I tend to agree with a former teacher of mine when he said that, in his experience, the quality of a text is inversely proportional to the number of pretty pictures in it.) :-)

Excellent Algebra II Text
I have taught and tutored math since 1989 and this is one one of the best Algebra II books out there. Clear examples, plenty of practice problems, presents a solid Algebra 2 curriculum, and has very few--if any--mistakes. I highly recommend it.

Too early to rate this.
This looks like a fine book, but the real test will be whether it helps my daughter pass her math regents. Her teacher had us buy it, so hopefully it will be helpful.

Too Many Errors
I have found many errors in the answer guides, even one in an example! I emailed the company, but no response. I checked with other math teachers. They agree that the errors I found are, in fact, errors.It's annoying.I think the book is terrific, and the problems are excellent, but please do not think you're loosing your marbles if you don't agree with the answer guide!!!

Integrated Algebra
The author is hampered by the fact that the Integrated Algebra is
a brand new regents. There is no prior history. At the end of the
volume, there is a good sample exam which emulates the actual ones
to be administered in January and June of 2008. In short, don't
throw out your old Math A book because it contains more pertinent
regents practice questions.

A cursory review of the new volume disclosed that the content is
similar to the Math A. The sample exam is slightly more complicated
and theoretical.

Parts 2 and 3 of the new sample exam are significantly more complex
than the comparable Math A. I suspect that the initial
administrations of this new exam will produce a curve which reflects
the learning transfer in the new course.

The examples in the new Integrated Algebra are pertinent. There are plenty of illustrations on how to utilize the statistical calculator
to solve a plethora of problems-particularly in probability and statistics.

From a review of the sample exam, I believe that candidates should
endeavor to maximize their score on Part I of the exam which is
fairly comparable to the current Math A.

The new volume is replete with plenty of pertinent examples in
polynomials, number theory, equations, elementary trigonometry and
probability/statistical inference amongst many other topics. The
acquisition would be a good value for the price charged. Students
would benefit from this volume because it contains sufficient illustrations to amplify the concepts tested on the "live regents exam".
Practice is helpful because the new regents criteria requires a
minimum passing grade of 65 in all the regents subjects pertinent
to obtaining a diploma in NYS.

Highly Recomend
I bought this book to help me before I started algebra class. I did each chapter at my own pace, and did all of the exercises. This really helped me. I aced my class! I found that this book has the perfect combination of visual with written instructions and explanations. I plan to purchase more books from the Demystifying series as I progress through my maths classes.

Great place to start a math journey or re-education.
Great math book.I dropped out of high school, and barely got by in math classes back then, and sometimes not at all... (C-'s, D's and F's).Im 40 now, and Ive been doing well with this course.Ive spent about 2 hours every Sat. and Sunday in a Barnes and Noble coffee shop for about 4 months to do it (Im on the final chapter now and only have 5 pages left).Finally I'm really beginning to understand math, andI Get it!Sometimes i had to stare at a problem for 10 to 15 minutes and think in through.But it finally paid off.

Anyways, I feel like Im ready for intermediate algebra at the College level now for real.My only criticism is that i wish the graphing section had more in depth training on graphs and example problems/solutions,I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn math and build a solid foundation.

I wish the author would put up a website for any reported errors and solutions also (there were only a few).

A Teacher Who Wants You To Succeed
Thank you, Mr. Bluman. You have cracked into my brain, and now I can do math, without a calculator, without feeling like my head will explode! Mr. Bluman is a gifted, no-nonsense teacher who can teach anyone math with this straightforward, brilliantly crafted self-teaching manual. He even tackles math phobia -it is real- and dispatches it effectively with tips to get yourself going every day. This book should be in every junior high and high school library. He gives you the tools and then with practice, you can solve the problems. The format ofexplanations step-by-step, repetition, practice, and practice tests and final tests in every chapter is an excellent approach to truly "getting it". Thanks a million!

Worked really well for me
I bought this book (and a bunch of others) because I wanted to prepare myself for a college math assessment test and score high enough that I could jump straight into statistics (I know, pretty ambitious!).

My current situation?

1) I haven't studied algebra (or any math at all for that matter!) in about 20 years

2) I didn't learn math in English

So, after opening the first algebra book and realizing I didn't remember how to do even more basic operations, like dividing large numbers by large numbers, I decided I needed to get something that went even further back.

I bought about 10 books, thinking that it was a good investment, as skipping the basic math classes at about $300, plus the cost of books, for each, would save me quite a bit of money.

After reading about 40 pages of the first basic math book, I was very disappointed. It was unclear, complicated and just didn't make much sense to me. I started to wonder if things had changed THAT much since I used to study. I put the book aside and pulled this one from the pile. Well, it has 12 chapters and I have completed 8 so far. The book is great! I read some bad reviews and, who knows, maybe chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12 are rubbish... But I doubt it!

The approach is logical, practical and easy to follow. There are quite a few exercises and tests at the end of each chapter, as well as a complete test at the end of the book. I usually complete a couple of chapters, then take all the chapter-end tests from the previous chapters again before proceeding. This way, the information stays fresh in my mind.

I liked this book so much that I bought about 4 or 5 more books from the DeMystified collection, including Algebra and Math Word Problems (the latter by the same author). Ok, so maybe I buy books compulsively at times, but I am very excited about math, probably for the first time in my life.

If you need to take a refresher course, or if you need support for classes you are taking, I truly recommend this book!

HAHA! Ok, I'll explain why I am laughing. I have been working on this book and everything has been good until chapter 11 page 211. I remembered when I first bought this book, I read this comment and thought "ok the guy (S.Brown) just doesn't know how to answer the problem" I came on here looking for this comment to see if it was the same comment I had. That is why I am laughing. The author really does just give up after chapter 10! Although there are a few errors in this book, it's a pretty ok book. Considering I didn't even know my multiplication table before I started this book and now I can pass math tests easily. Yah! Except the graphing. We homeschooled our kids over a period of years, and Saxon Math, including Algebra 2, was always our choice for math texts.I also teach in a classical Christian school where we use Saxon Math as well.Currently, I'm teaching using Saxon Algebra 2 (2 of my own kids are in the class).Even though I was a strong math student in school, it's been a while since I've looked at Algebra 2.

The Solutions Manual for Saxon Algebra 2 is an invaluable aid to helping those who teach Algebra 2.It not only gives you the answers (which the Teacher's Edition of the text does) but also shows you how to do the problems.Even teachers get stumped once in a while, especially with some of the more advanced problems.For homeschoolers, it could also be a great aid to advanced and trustworthy students who are valiantly attempting to teach themselves Algebra 2!

Great value for the price
I like to order extra books because the books these kids have to carry back and forth to school are very heavy. I ordered this bood as an extra to keep at home. The book is in great condition and I didn't pay for a new book. I bought used and it worked for me.

Not essential but recommended at this level
ABOUT THE SOLUTIONS MANUAL

The 'Solutions manual' can be a useful reference to anyone not fully comfortable with the topic and I didn't think I needed one until we did 'Algebra 1' last year. For 'Algebra 2' I felt that I HAD to have it. The manual is needed because the 'normal' kit would only have 'full solutions' for the tests but the problem Answer Key book only hasthe correct answers for the practice and the problem sets but it does NOT show not the step-by-step.

For the THIRD Edition what you get is 370 pages showing the steps you take to solve every single practice and problem set question with the cautionary note from the authors what there is often more than one way to get to the right answer. However, the Solutions Manual tries to stay as close as possible to the methods and procedures as presented in the textbook. The early solutions to a particular type of problem show every single step while later solutions omit the simple steps.

I am very happy for ordering the Solutions Manual. Even though I don't expect to use it very often, it's reassuring to have it handy, just in case. This book, while not a 'must have' component of an 'Algebra 2 kit' gets 5-stars for thoroughness and for 'being there when I need it'.


NOTES OF CAUTION

There are TWO main things you must check and make sure that are right before you order:

- Make sure that the EDITION for this book matches your student's manual. The current is the THIRD edition but SECOND edition courseware is still available from vendors.
- Be aware that this is NOT an essential component of an 'Algebra 2 Kit' even though it may help.
- You will only need ONE copy, no matter how many students you may have. This should be mostly for teacher use.

What you MUST have in order to be able to teach Algebra 2 is (for the Third Edition):

- The "Algebra 2 Third Edition" student's textbook [this one] that includes the 129 lessons, 2 introductory or review lessons, Glossary, Index and answers to the odd-numbered questions.
- The "Homeschool Testing Book" that include the 32 tests, reproducible test answer sheets and the answers together with the 'step-by-step' on how to get there.
- The "Answer Key" booklet that has the answers to all the practice and problem sets but ONLY the answers, not the ways to get there.

The Dive Supplement

I found the DIVE Math Instructional CD for Saxon Algebra 2 3rd ed. to be a very useful addition to the kit. In fact I am using it this year after using the 'Algebra 1' edition last year. Like it's the case with the Solutions Manual, you will only need one DIVE CD even if you have more than one student.

It's worth noting that DIVE is NOT a Saxon product. This is a separate product that closely follows the Saxon course and you should make sure that you match the Saxon edition with the correct version of the DIVE CD.


A Personal Note
---------------

I should say that, to us, the effectiveness of Saxon's method is no longer a matter or doubt or debate. My senior kid was awarded the 'Highest Average in Math' at his campus upon completing his 8th grade and I have little doubt that our math home study is/was a contributing factor to his being awarded the "President's Education Award" and his bing on the Honor Roll on all 4 quarters of his 8th grade. His younger brother is also a 'straight A math student (typical math grade average is 97-99 each term) and a Honor roll/Principal's List most of the time. I mention this because both of them used to be quite 'in the middle' as in 'mediocre' when we started with Saxon (that's what prompted me to 'take action'). Us practicing math after school clearly developed their study skills and, since math is so 'hard', it helped them master most of the other topics taught in school with ease.

And, finally, and this might have fit under 'practical advice' as well, I'd like to note that doing this is NOT easy. Covering 129 lessons ad giving 32 tests calls for a VERY SIGNIFICANT investment of time and effort from both parent and children. I estimate we spent anything from 90 minutes to 2 hours per lesson and we usually 'do math' 5 to 6 days per week with a typical math study year beginning at the end of August and ending sometime early or mid-May.

Very helpful
This workbook has been a great help for my daughter. She uses it to study for her exams and has done quite well. You must, however, buy the answer key separately. Look for "Algebra 1 Practice Workbook Answer Key", ISBN0-03-056499-9.

Unless you are an algebra whiz, this is useless
I bought this for my daughter to keep on her skills over the summer, but there is no answer key nor is one available anywhere.It's been many years since I've worked algebra problems so there is no way to check if she's solved the problems correctly.This was a waste of money!

These problems look good, but without an answer key they're pretty useless. My algebra isn't bad, considering, but I had it 30 years ago, and so it's really not a useful tool for my daughter to review.

Great suplemental worksheets
I am a 9th and 10th grade algebra teacher.My school does not use the McGraw Hill textbook, so I can't speak to how well it supports the curriculum it was designed for. I bought it as a resource for suplemental practice worksheets.For that purpose, it's great.The worksheets assume some prior knowlege but a need to practice the fundamentals.There are a lot of similar problems, so students can gain confidence and familiarity.Buy this book!

Very poor quality printing
I have nothing to say about the content of the book itself; it seems to be an excellent book.However, one major problem (that Amazon apparently tries to hide) is that the softcover edition is a print-on-demand book.This wouldn't really be a problem, if the printing quality was anywhere close to that of a normal book.Unfortunately, it isn't.The entire book looks like it was run through a cheap fax machine.There is noticeable fuzziness and pixelation; it is highly annoying, looks terrible, and makes the book hard to read.I cannot believe Springer would produce something of such low quality.I plan to return this book and get a used hardcover copy.

Linear algebra made fun!
OK, I admit that I have never much liked matrices (or determinants). Standard textbooks for undergraduates typically seem to devote 200-250 pages to telling one in an informal and concrete way what a vector is, what a matrix is, what a determinant is and how to do all sorts of highly boring / tedious matrix operations, etc., i.e., there is no real algebra in these so-called linear algebra books until one is pretty much bored to tears.And even when they do introduce some algebra, they deal almost exclusively with the reals (with a tiny nod here and there to complex numbers) and the presentation does not provide a unified coherent picture nor prepare one for more advanced mathematics. So if one wants to learn about the algebra in linear algebra, one needs to look elsewhere and Linear Algebra Done Right not only does it right but also makes it fun.The exposition is generally very clear (this does not mean one does not need to work a bit to understand the material!) and since it sticks to essentials, it moves along at a nice clip.What a breath of fresh air!Despite my lavish praise, I would not recommend this book as one's first or only book on linear algebra.But I recommend this book very highly to anyone who wants to appreciate the beauty of (actual) linear algebra or needs a stepping stone to more advanced books such as Roman's Advanced Linear Algebra (Graduate Texts in Mathematics) or books on linear functional analysis and Hilbert spaces such as Linear Functional Analysis (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series), Kreyszig Introductory Functional Analysis with Applications or Introduction to Spectral Theory in Hilbert Space (Dover Books on Mathematics).

Linear algebra done right
Hate this book. This is purely designed for graduate students but I am an undergrad. I found nothing relevant in this book and I am sure to dump it as soon as I am done with the class. By this book if you're ready for a headache.

THIS BOOK IS REQUIRED FOR ONE OF MY LINEAR ALGEBRA COURSE. IT IS A SOFT COPY BUT IN GREAT PRINT. THE PAPER FEELS NICE. IT IS VERY CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE FOR BOTH UNDERGRADS AND GRADS. IF YOU GO THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK, YOU WOULD HAVE A SYSTEMATIC VIEW OF THIS SUBJECT. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT.

Great book for Applied Mathematics.
Did I just say that a book that has no examples of how to use a concept in applied situations is great for applied mathematics?

Yes. And I mean it.

I'm currently taking a graduate course in numerical analysis, which is about as applied as you can get. Here's how I read my textbook: I read through a section on say, the QR-algorithm for finding eigenvalues. After a long, brutal period of intense focus, I go"what did that just say?", and then I read it again. I think, "what in the hell's an invariant subspace? What's this weird projection operator doing, what's this . . ."

And then I remember how to make the pain stop: Pick up Sheldon Axler's book, and read the appropriate section in his book. Then go back to numerical analysis, and breeze right through the exposition of the algorithm.

Dr. Axler doesn't claim that his book is for applied mathematicians or engineers. He wants you to understand the structure of linear operators. But guess what? Applied mathematics exploits many-no, all-of the deep concepts relating to the structure of linear operators. So if you want to be a good applied mathematician, someday you're going to have learn linear operator theory. If Maple does all of the math you need for your job, then you won't need to learn linear operator theory. And so don't use this book. But realize that someday, you will hit a wall.

Now onto some specifics of the book:

Some have complained about the lack of use of determinants in this book. Think about a mathematical concept that you use over and over again, that you can use as an analogy to other things and helps you go about your day. For me, I understand these concepts down to the very core. Things I don't understand down to the core, I can't extend to novel situations. And if we can't extend a concept to a novel situation, why learn it? Certainly we can tell Maple to compute it if we really need. For me, the determinant is a conceptual dead end. Not once in my life has anyone been able to explain why det(AB) = det(A)det(B). And I doubt that the person who does know finds that the proof very enlightening. Similarly, why should the determinant have anything to do with how a matrix scales it's eigenvectors? No one knows! Ok, you say, but we do need to know if a matrix is invertible, and so we should teach people that the determinant can tell them that. Fair enough. I'll giveyour students a 100x100 matrix, and then I'll come back next year to find out whether or not it's singular. They'll say, well we got 10^-12. And I'll say, "does that mean all that matrices eigenvalues are 3/4,or one of them is zero and you just got round-off error?" They'll have a blank stare, and then I'll estimate the matrix's condition number in a few seconds and tell them the answer. So for engineers and applied mathematics, the determinant is truly useless. Dr. Axler is correct to scrap it.


Next:

Some have complained about the lack of solutions to the problems. This is false. There are many solved problems in this book. They just have the solution immediately after the statement of the problem. I find it baffling that if the author had just moved the proofs to the back of the book, and labeled the theorems "Problem", then this complaint would disappear. This is a math book, not a Charles Dickens novel. You read a Charles Dickens novel, you battle a math book. When you read the word "Theorem" in a math book, you try to prove it yourself. Then, after failing, you read the author's proof. I don't see how this is at all a controversial statement, but if people read math books like math books, then no one would complain about the lack of solved problems. The fact that Dr. Axler has to copyright the solutions (provided this is true, I don't know)is a sad testament to the fact that people don't want to battle math, they want to regurgitate it. They would rather sleuth the internet for 12 hours trying to find posted solutions rather than spend one hour thinking. I've done it myself. But once these solutions are available, and people know that sleuthing will prevent thinking, then your book has shot its wad.

A good review and work book
At my age (the dark side of seventy) learning anything is a challenge. I was exposed to algebra sixty years ago and it didn't take then. Trying again today and using this book my brain gets a work out and math workbooks are not written to be entertaining. However, I have to say that, "an hour of study using this book is a greater pleasure than listening to thirty minutes of the six o'clock news"
In summation, This book is a good learning tool.

Paths Untaken
Many,many years ago when I was in school, you had the choice of subjects like alegebra or so called "commercial arithmetic,Anticipating, I would be working in an office, I saw no need to do the alegbra.What a huge mistake.
I am now 78 years old and to this day, I regret not having learned it- so may job advancements closed to me.It has always been a regret.I, every one in while decided it was something I would learn before I died because it was a path untaken. While I still may never learn it.... who knows????

Only good if you're already good at math
This is the kind of book that is either going to help you out immensely, as it did for me, or completely baffle you. If you're already strong in math and want a comprehensive review of basic algebra topics (as we tend to forget some of these things as we are learning more advanced calculus), this book will serve you well. However, if you're looking for a hand-holding guide through algebra, you're out of luck. This book provides minimalistic and concise explanation, which you will find helpful if mathematically minded and annoying if you are not naturally good at math.

This book is packed full of both mathematical theory and practical applications. The first few chapters build up your skill in fractions, negative numbers, decimals, percents, roots, exponents, variables, factoring, etc. Later on you are introduced to a chapter on linear equations, another chapter on linear inequalities, and a following chapter on applications of linear equations/inequalities with plenty of word problems for you to apply the concepts to. The final two chapters are devoted to solving quadratic equations and to applying quadratic principles to word problems.

I would like give special commendation to the chapters on applications of linear and quadratic equations. They show just how essential math is to real life and manage to keep the course interesting. If you want to get anything out of this book, make sure you do all of the practice problems or you won't learn anything.

In short, if you like math and are already good at it, but jonesing for a review of the basics, then get this book. If you are a high school student stumped on algebra and not naturally good at mathematics, then this is not the book for you. Instead I would maybe recommend Master Math Algebra with a good problem book on the side. Or, if you don't feel like spending money, go here: [...]

My biggest criticism: THERE ISN'T A SINGLE GRAPH IN THIS ENTIRE BOOK! What kind of book hopes to teach algebra without showing a SINGLE Cartesian coordinate system in the whole thing? As such, you will learn absolutely nothing about conic sections in this book like parabolas, hyperbolas, ellipses, etc... which are pretty standard fare for ANY course in algebra.

This book was recommended to me and I purchased it as a gift for a student of algebra.It is not the regular text book but it is helping the student.The student has told me several times how it has helped her.

not perfect but useful
you might notice a few typos every 20 pages. I can let that go cause I've never been exposed to this subject.

The typos are a tremendous shame
I just finished the text. It is a nice easy review. The amount of theory and proofs is kept to a minimum which should please those who are less gifted mathematically. The major issues as stated elsewhere are the number of typos and errors which were not caught in the editing process. Many are obvious and easy to fix. I would encourage the editors of this series to be more careful in the proofing. Perhaps it is too expensive given the low purchase price of the texts. Maybe we should all send in a list of errata and they could print a new edition.

be smarter than the book!
I really like the approach of this book, as it uses good analogies, examples, graphs, and figures that appeal to your intuition to give deeper meaning to the subtleties of linear algebra.But it is a shame there are typos and mistakes.One in particular blew my mind - on p. 51 she states " A square matrix is singular if it has a multiplicative inverse; a matrix is non-singular if it does not have a multiplicative inverse."This is exactly opposite of how everyone else defines "singular", but she uses this definition consistently throughout the book, so either it's a mistake or she has decided to rewrite the rules of linear algebra.Either way, it's not helpful!!!

I hate having to make corrections on a book I just paid for, but for the price, what can you expect?Most textbooks on the subject are between two and ten times more expensive, and they have mistakes too.But the other books are dense, dry, and boring.At least this book attempts to make linear algebra interesting, if not fun.

College Algebra, 7th edition; Larson/Hostetler
I usually do not do these reviews, but I have to regarding this book. DON'T GET IT unless you absolutely have to or unless you have a wonderful teacher who makes sure you know everything you before you are set to an assignment. This is NOT the book to use with an online course or independent study.

The book's explanations are not clear most of the time. They go into great detail(relative to the book in general) regarding the most fundamental of skills, but then skip over essential basics and not-so-basics when they present the skills that are not mere foundational pre-algebra. I've spent more time searching for information on the internet (You Tube has some incredibly useful videos by a number of people with varying explanations, and Western Texas A&M has the best explanations of skills/processes I've seen)

In the exercises, they give you problems based on the processes presented, but often give problems that are beyond what was presented in the chapter and show no examples of how to build up to that level. Thankfully I have the solution manual which shows the progression so I can go to the internet and ask "How do I go from here to there?" and find an answer thanks to generous mathematicians who want to share their knowledge.

In short - if you can use another book, don't waste you money on this one.

Bad condition
the book has ok it had all the apges put the cover had A HUGE DENT in the middle of the cover from some type of damgage and it took longer than my other book but it was ther before the Delivery date so it was OK
