Product Description
This book provides a bridge from learning the theory of school administration to the practical problem solving in which school principals and other leaders engage. This book continues to be based on the research indicating linkages between educational leadership and productive schools, especially in terms of outcomes for children. It supports the understanding that formal leadership in schools is a complex, multi-faceted task that requires continual learning and that effective school leaders must be strong educators focused on the central issues of learning, teaching, and school improvement. School leaders must also be moral agents and social advocates for the children and communities they serve while working with community stakeholders to create learning communities that value and care for others as individuals and as members of the educational community. For those aspiring to become principals or hold leadership positions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's ok
I guess if you don't have any other books you can buy, get this one. But it will not tell you anything you already didn't know about nursing school.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a newer edition!
I thought this book was amazing...it covered everything I needed to know and then some. One of my friends was ready to quit school until he got this book...he said it was like a (knowledgable) best friend sitting on the shelf!

Looking at the review below, there are some good concerns raised, but almost all of what the reader didn't like has been addressed in the second edition of this book which came out a few months or so ago. There are also some other cool features of the new book...like info on PDAs (my school requires 'em now)and all sorts of info on the nursing shortage.

It might be hard to find (because Amazon has the author's name messed up a bit!) but if you do a search by the title you can find the new edition.

Anyway, definitely purchase this book...the resources alone are worth the price!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but could be better
This book contained some useful information, but I feel that it just skimmed the surface and left some important questions unanswered. For example, in its discussion of the differences between the different types of degrees (diploma, AD, BSN), it would be nice to know: do nurses with BSN's make a lot more money? What is the average salary of a nurse with a bachelor's versus a nurse without one? Are BSN's better prepared to enter the workforce? Do community college nurses get more clinical experience than students in BSN programs? I'd also like to know: does an education at a prestigious, highly ranked nursing school pay off, or is nursing a field where a person would be just as well off attending an inexpensive local college? The book touched upon these questions, but really didn't provide any specific answers. I also feel that it would be helpful to know a bit more about what to expect academically in nursing school. The book emphasizes over and over again that there is a ton of work and it's all very hard, but what are the core nursing classes? What sort of material is studied in the classroom? Are there any books one can read before entering nursing school to prepare oneself (aside from books covered in prerequisite courses)? In terms of academics, what classes are part of a bachelor's program that are not included in an AD program? What specific procedures does a student need to know how to perform by the time he or she graduates? Are there any books available that describe these procedures?
I am left with many unanswered questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best career guide I've read
I picked up this book to read during Spring Break while waiting to hear if I was accepted into an accellerated RN program. It was a great quick read, and I got a lot of great tips out of it.I have been taking pre-reqs, and had already decided on a program, so a lot of the beginning of the book was just a confirmation of what I had already been through.
The web-site listings are really great, especially the humor ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for those thinking about nursing.
I'm a 27 year old husband and father thinking about entering an AD nursing program. As you can see, I'm not exactly the average prospective student here- nursing or otherwise. For this very reason I wanted to be sure I was on the straight and narrow path to making a wise decision regarding my future. Being an avid reader, the first place I looked was the book section here on Amazon.com. "How to Survive... Nursing School" seemed like an obvious choice to start with, and am I ever glad I did. Spun with wisdom and soft humor this book takes you from the early process of applying for school all the way to passing the NCLEX exam and looking for a job, with thought provoking reasons for becoming a nurse throughout. Most importantly, most of the helpful anticdotes are derived from current students from all across the country. They provide priceless and sometimes blunt facts about the nursing process, both pros and cons (mostly pros). I purchased this book with the idea of skimming certain parts I was interseted in, but ended up reading every last word.

If you are a nurse hopeful or already studying away, I strongly suggest this book as a starting point to a brighter understanding of the nursing world. ... Read more

Product Description
Thirteen years ago, Tom Bloch was CEO of H&R Block, the groundbreaking tax organization. The son of the company’s founder, he was a happily married 41-year-old executive, but something was missing from his life. After a nineteen-year career at the company, Bloch resigned his position to become a math teacher in an impoverished inner-city section of Kansas City. Stand for the Best reveals Bloch’s struggles to make a difference for his marginalized students and how he eventually co-founded a successful charter school, University Academy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars important message
This is a story that should reach all ears. For young adults, thinking about careers, this puts a different spin on what "success" means.Tom is up front about how his financial security gave him options to make choices that might be more difficult for others. At the same time, he convinces the readers that the payback for this kind of commitment is greater than a paycheck. The education of all of today's children has to be one of the most significant issues we face. With an educationed population, economys tend to be strong.Lets give some kids a chance and see what they can do.My guess is ANYTHING!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book is both compelling and insightful. The narrative is engaging -- how many young CEO's quit million dollar a year jobs with giant family businesses (H&R Block) to teach in the inner city?!There is a lot more to this book than boy goes to work for his Dad and leaves to teach.Tom explores the hardest and deepest decisions we all have to make, and on his road to self discovery, presents quite a road map for us to follow. In doing so, he also gives the reader a view into the world of inner-city education and charter schools.Bravo - a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous, honest & hugely upbeat
What happens when you have everything, and it doesn't make you happy?Tom Bloch had a wonderful family, health,
wealth and was the CEO of his families tax preparation business.

But he decided that he could do more by being an inner city math teacher. So that is what
he became, and helped start a charter public school in Kansas City.

Whether you are an educator, parent, business person or someone thinking about your future, this is a GREAT book.
Bloch is tough on himself, recognizing that he had a strong support system.
He knows it was easier for him to walk away that it could be for others.

Bloch writes a strong defense of terrific teachers (some of whom he
describes, who he thinks should be paid a lot more money). He is explaining why the charter public school movement makes sense.

And he gently urges us to follow our heart, and to live the kind of life
that will most serve others, and make us happy.Wealth did NOT give Bloch what he wanted.

Walking away from a top corporate life, and walking into an inner city school to teach math, where he continues to
teach math, that's what added up for him.An upbeat and very encouraging book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Bloch's story is very uplifting. How many people in his position would leave it all behind to try to make a difference in the world? He readily admits he could afford to do so, but he has truly walked the walk, rather than just talking about it. This book puts it all out there--his internal struggles, the path he took and what he learned along the way. He underscores the importance of the teaching profession and makes a plea for society to give it morerespect. This book will appeal to people considering a career change who aren't sure they have the courage to do it, teachers who question their significance, and just anyone who wants to be inspired.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read -- both entertaining and thoughtful
This is a good read. Tom Bloch's personal story is riveting and he is brave enough to share some very private emotions. But this book is more than a collection of anecdotes from the classroom where backpacks leak pickle juice and children regularly lose family members to shootings. Bloch has taken a thoughtful look at the herculean challenges before America's urban teachers and the universal human challenge to find purpose and meaning in our lives. He is also brave enough to offer some suggestions for institutional improvements.Worthwhilereading for anyone worried about America's schools and its students. Knowing that the book profits will go back into teacher training makes it easy to pay the hardback price. ... Read more
